Eldeeb, Osama Ali ; Maitah, Mansoor (advisor) ; Jana, Jana (referee)
Developing countries need to develop their economies and one of the most important issues related to this development is capital accumulation. Capital accumulation is no longer an easy task even for developed countries. Developing Countries have many difficulties with income generation and employment creation. There are two ways how to solve such crucial issues, even borrow finance which is expensive way or attract foreign direct investments. The new Libyan government declared its intention to develop the economy and involve it in the international economy in order to reach entire economic development. This thesis examines and explores the Libyan doing business conditions in relation to foreign direct investments in all economic sectors. The most important task of this thesis is to quantify the inflow of foreign direct investments and its impact on employment in Libya, their impact on economic growth and the impact of foreign direct investments on exports volumes. The thesis will attempt to evaluate the benefits of foreign direct investments to Libyan economy. The research examines whether they bring benefits such as the transfer of know-how, the transfer of new technologies, the introduction of new procedures and the improvement of labor force. In addition the research attempts to evaluate whether Libyan business environment is appropriate to attract foreign direct investments. The thesis conclusions will contain recommendations regarding the implemented policies and procedures which can be beneficial in improving the business environment which enables the attraction of additional foreign direct investments. The main aim of this thesis is to examine the impact of foreign direct investments on employment in Libya and to fulfill this aim there is a need to identify the main determinants that determine the evolution of employment and jobs creation in Libyan economy. Based on these calculations and conclusions of the research, certain economic measures and recommendations will be suggested. The contribution of the dissertation should therefore be based on econometric techniques that we will be able to discover the scope and potential opportunities for economic and employment policies in Libya. The study also revealed that there are many challenges facing policy makers in order to reform the business environment to make it more attractive for foreign direct investments.
The Impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on Economic Growth – The Case of Selected Arab Countries
Hodrab, Rami Mohammad Awad ; Maitah, Mansoor (advisor) ; Soukup, Alexandr (referee)
Information and communication technology (ICT), population growth, gross capital formation, Openness, labour and inflation are frequently well-thought-out as important drivers of economic growth for all countries, so as for Arab countries in our case. This study aims to examine the effect of these factors on 18 selected Arab countries economic growth, covering the period from 1995 to 2013, with the main interest of the impact of ICT. The results show positive and significant impact of ICT index (infodensity that represents the capital and labour stock of ICT) for each individual country (except for Djibouti with negative ICT index elasticity and UAE with insignificant impact) ranged from 0.10 for Lebanon to 0.469 point for Qatar. The panel regression results show that ICT positively and significantly affect the whole sample of 18 Arab countries economic growth with 0.108 point, as well as GCF ratio with 0.129 impact, in addition to openness which encounters positive and significant impact with 0.054 point, and inflation with negative significant impact. These results are accommodated with many related studies. Population growth is insignificant to economic growth. The 18 Arab countries are divided into three sub groups according to their infodensity levels. The research results show that there is a relatively large gap between first and second groups of high and intermediate infodensity values in one side and the third group (with low infodensity and GDP per capita values) on the other side. In order to verify further the results of positive and significant impact of ICT on economic growth, a second study model that depends on Cobb-Douglas production function is applied with ICT and non-ICT capital services and labour services. This second model is applied on five Arab countries that covers the period from 1993 to 2014 using ARDL method. The regressed results show a long run equilibrium cointegrated relationship between ICT and non-ICT capital services, in addition to labour services and GDP growth. The results tell a positive and significant elasticity of ICT capital services at short and long run, and this value is more than the ICT capital services compensation share, which indicates ICT spillover in these Arab countries. Labour services impact on GDP growth is positive and significant on long run, but for non-ICT capital services, there is a negative and significant impact. So finally it is worth for the Arab countries to invest more and efficiently in ICT assets, in addition these countries have to efficiently use the available ICT resources.

There have been mixed two approaches fundamental and technical analysis. Fundamental analysis brings information about the main factors affecting the supply and demand of chosen commodities and putting these information into context of historical prices development. Technical analysis offers tools for volatility determination. The data based on technical analysis have been used for other processing with aim to bring better understanding of the market structure. The synthesis of previous results follow and the price development is interpreted in the context of these obtained information.

Kuzmenko, Elena ; Maitah, Mansoor (advisor) ; Smutka, Luboš (referee)
Recent years a lot of debates have been taking place around Russias dependence on natural resources, especially on crude oil and natural gas, and consequent necessity to escape from it through diversification of the Russian economy. The research problem of the present doctoral thesis therefore is to investigate whether Russia demonstrates any success in this process or not. The main goal of the thesis is to analyze Russian economic performance along with Russian producers (representing corresponding economic sectors) relative position towards foreign rivals in external and internal markets and via investigation of the real effective exchange rate of ruble and quality of Russian institutions shed some light on the presence of Natural resource curse phenomenon in the Russian economy. The analysis of Russian economic performance in the light of competitiveness was seen as justified since the results of that analysis may reveal the existence of perspective points of growth in the economy. In the final stage of the research the existence of a long-run interrelationship was checked among the structure of Russian export basket, GDP growth, price of crude oil and the real effective exchange rate of Russian ruble with the use of Johansen cointegration technique.
