Corpus based analysis of selected lexicon for horses, its collocations and adjectives in Middle and Early Modern English
Vařáková, Zuzana ; Tichý, Ondřej (advisor) ; Šmídová Müllerová, Světlana (referee)
The bachelor thesis aims at investigating some aspects of the semantic field "horse" and its changes throughout the Middle English and Early Modern English periods on the example of four selected terms from the category of warhorses and aristocratic horses: palfrey, destrier, steed, and courser. The thesis focuses mainly on the collocations of these words, with particular (but not exclusive) emphasis on adjectives. Its main hypothesis is that the collocations of the words may reflect, and thus also help to understand, the historical uses and social perception of the selected types of horses in the given periods. The theoretical part discusses the concepts of collocations, semantic change, and the development of the English lexis. Moreover, the chapter deals with the evolution of the English warhorse and the aristocratic horse in order to provide historical background. The research part is based on two diachronic corpora, the Corpus of the Middle English prose and Verse (CME) and the Early English Books Online (EEBO). In the analysis, the collocations of the selected words are examined by categorising them into various semantic groups, and used to determine the semantic prosody of each term. The findings are also compared and contextualised with the information from the historical and cultural...
Analogy in word-formation: the evidence of OED
Seidlová, Klára ; Čermák, Jan (advisor) ; Müllerová, Světlana (referee)
The present thesis aims to provide a detailed characterization of analogy as a word-formation process in the context of the historical development of English. The research part of this paper analyses a selection of words modelled on the analogy of already existing ones, as implied in the Etymology section of The Oxford English Dictionary. The extracted data is examined from the perspectives of the distinct historical periods of the English language in terms of the word-formation processes as well as the word classes affected by these changes. Müllerová, Světlana ; Čermák, Jan (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
CHARLES UNIVERSITY - FACULTY OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ELT METHODOLOGY Relationships between the borrowed Old Norse adjectives in English and their Old English counterparts MA THESIS Supervisor: prof. PhDr. Jan Čermák, CSc. Author: Světlana Müllerová Abstract: The aim of this MA thesis is to examine the relationship between six word pairs, each comprising an Old Norse adjectival borrowing in Middle English and its Old English counterpart along with its Middle English reflex for further reference. The inquiry into their relationship involves an analysis of: their (i) formal aspects, (ii) syntactic properties, (iii) semantic fields and (iv) external factors possibly contributing to their obsolescence or survival, such as the restriction to certain text types or geographic localization, as suggested by the individual linguistic profiles in the Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English and Linguistic Atlas of Late Mediaeval English. The description of individual semantic fields of the given words is based on their semantic classification within the Historical Thesaurus of English. This analysis is based on the occurrences of the individual words as taken from the dictionaries Middle English Dictionary and Dictionary of Old English, and related corpora Dictionary of Old English Corpus and...

Müllerová, Světlana ; Popelíková, Jiřina (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
CHARLES UNIVERSITY - FACULTY OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ELT METHODOLOGY Semantic Classification of Old Norse Lexical Borrowings in English BA THESIS Supervisor: Mgr. Jiřina Popelíková Author: Světlana Müllerová Abstract The aim of this BA thesis was to examine the Old Norse lexical loans entering Middle English as presented by Middle English Dictionary, and to classify them according to the semantic fields provided by Thesaurus of Old English. The semantic categories of the Thesaurus also provided Old English lexical units, which were excerpted and served for observation of the relationship between the native lexis and the incoming Scandinavian borrowings. Most of the semantic categories in the Thesaurus are represented by the loans and the Old English lexical units largely cover the meanings of the entering borrowings. Key words: Old Norse lexical loans, Middle English, Middle English Dictionary, semantic fields, semantic classification, Thesaurus of Old English, Old English lexical units, Old Norse, Old English
