Modernization Theory and the case of France's Overseas Territories
Baticle, Swein ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (advisor) ; Císař Brown, Lucy Elizabeth (referee)
Modernization theory, despite its critiques and limited predictive capacities, continues to exert a lasting influence on contemporary societies and developmental policies. This is evident in France's historical efforts to modernize its Overseas Territories, which serve as a fruitful area of research for modernization theory. With direct executive power over the territories and their distinct historical and cultural backgrounds, France's relationship with its Overseas Territories highlights the dichotomy between the "modernizer" and the "modernized." This dynamic is shaped by the legacy of colonialism, as these territories were formally colonized by France less than a century ago. The historical culpability of France is reflected in policies of "reparation," the persistence of a "colonial frame," and the conceptualization of the territories as "laboratories of modernity." This paper explores the geopolitical, economic, and social dependencies of the Overseas Territories on France, and the complexities of power dynamics and historical legacies that shape their development policies. The case of France and its Overseas Territories underscores the enduring impact of modernization theory and its relevance in understanding contemporary developmental challenges and strategies.

Duffek, Adam ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (advisor) ; Německý, Marek (referee)
Globalization and its Influence on Social Identities Author: Adam Duffek Thesis Title: Globalization and its Influence on Social Identities University: Charles University Prague Thesis Advisor: PhDr. Alemayehu Kumsa, Ph.D. Place and date: Prague, January 2023 Abstract This thesis analyzes the influence of globalization on social identities. The main argument is that globalization fragments social identities. This thesis uses the term identity in the context of sociology as social identities that are created in a social context and are creating social reality. Globalization is perceived as one of the most significant influencers of the modern era. Globalization is multidimensional and influences many aspects of social reality and undoubtedly social identities as well. Three main spheres of globalization that also primarily influence social identities are the economic, political, and cultural sphere. Each is responsible for the creation and fragmentation of these identities in a specific way. The primary product of globalization is a supply of new possibilities and constant change, which causes unpredictability and consequently uncertainty. People refuse to bind to any social identities because they can become an obstacle in the future. Identities in the globalized world became complex, multidimensional,...
Bejas - history, society and culture
Záhořík, Jan ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (advisor) ; Kropáček, Luboš (referee)
A history of the Beja tribes goes back to the antiquity. The Beja nation represents o ne of the oldest known African nations. Exploring foreign countries and nations, was mainly for Greek historians, connected with several problems. Strange civilizations were described in more or less unreal colours, as for example headless or without other parts of the body. The change in viewing "the others" came in the Middle Ages thanks to Arab scholars to whom we are obliged for their valuable information about the Beja tribes. Unfortunately, we do not have a rich information base from the ancient times. We can get some information from the rock inscriptions, but there are only few relevant sources describing the Beja tribes. Especially Cerman speaking travelers and scholars of the 19th century play an important role in learning about the Beja. Their records can help us to look at their history and to know a bit from their everyday life. From the 20th century we have a lack of records and direct resources. That is the reason why reconstruction of the modern Beja history can be difficult. ft is surely interesting to consider how the view of the Beja was changing throughout the times. First of all, they were seen as the "wild ones, " dangerous nomad nation which is an enemy oj all its neighbours. Then, especially in the...

Balcha, Daniel Messele ; Potůček, Martin (advisor) ; Frič, Pavol (referee) ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (referee)
This case study seeks to understand the scope of governance in addressing HIV/AIDS issues in Ethiopia by making use of HIV/AIDS partnership forums that exist in the country. All individuals representing the government sector, the NGO sector, the for profit sector and HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office (HAPCO) both at the national level and in the three regions namely Oromia Region, Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) and Addis Ababa have been interviewed. Additional data were gathered using a PARTNER tool survey and also relevant documents have been analyzed. The social capital and governance theories create a framework where actors enjoy partnerships and use the benefits in both policy making and implementation. With the help of a problem tree and thematic analysis the study describes the causal effect relationship of the factors affecting partnerships and their ultimate consequence in maximizing social capital and governance. Accordingly, the thesis identifies the specific effects of the 2009 law on partnership endeavors in particular and HIV/AIDS policy implementation in general. Moreover, the study points out the existence of insufficient partnership in both decision making and policy implementation.

Sociology of genocide in German South West Africa
Bauer, Karel ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (advisor) ; Německý, Marek (referee)
The main focus of this work is genocide in one of the former German colonies. German South West Africa, in the present day known as Namibia, faced such a frightening event at the beginning of 20th century that very few situations in human history can compare to it. This work tries to bring the reader closer to the situation in southwest Africa in the period of German colonialism, especially to the genocide of the Herero and Nama nations. The main goal of this diploma thesis is based on defining the term genocide and the description of contemporary events in German South West Africa. The key aim is to find certain connections between genocide committed by the German Empire in German South West Africa and genocide perpetrated several decades later by Nazi Germany in Eastern Europe during Second Word War.
