Augustus - Napoleon - Mussolini - Hitler
Porsch, Michal ; Kepartová, Jana (advisor) ; Foltýn, Dušan (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to acquaint the reader with historical parallels between the reigns of princeps Augustus, Napoleon Bonaparte, Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. The thesis is also focused on the propaganda and self-presentation of these politicians and on the inspiration of the Roman state in modern history. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the lives of all the mentioned personalities, their rise to power and to the main political acts and procedures they used during their reigns. The cultural development of states under the reigns of these politicians is also mentioned here. An important element that is present throughout the work is Augustus's reference to later political and cultural history, on which princeps' reign had a significant influence. Subsequently, based on the studied sources and literature, the thesis includes the comparation of individual reigns, looks for similarities and differences, evaluates whether it is a conscious use of August's political acts. The main objective of this thesis is to present whether August's legacy was used intentionally in later history and his political practices become inspiration for future generations, or whether it is more of a coincidence. This work also traces the ways in which Augustus' personality and rule were reflected...
Ancient Mythology in the Poetry of Authors of the František Palacký's Generation
Taubeová, Kristýna ; Kepartová, Jana (advisor) ; Pokorný, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of the use of mythological creatures of the Greco- Roman pantheon in the poetry of selected contemporaries of the Czech historian František Palacký. The first part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of the context of the era and the literary inspirations, both ancient and contemporary, that may have influenced the works of these authors. The second part deals with the actual analysis of the collections and the analysis of the mentioned beings. The National Revival is a time focused largely on the nations history and mythology, yet the ancient traditions that inspired European literature were not forgotten. Ancient culture was still considered very valuable at that time and authors tried to bring its mythology closer to the Czech or Slavic one. This was done to a large extent, especially in the poetry of Ján Kollár. His versions of the Slavic gods, which are easy to compare to the Greek and Roman ones (for example, Mílek, who is the Czech version of Amor) also influence the poetry of his contemporaries. However common versions of the gods as they were known from the works of classical authors (Ovid, Homer), were also used. These gods are mainly used in the poems as symbols for their domains. Luna was most often used as a symbol of the moon and Zephyrus...
Roman Senate and Army. The Crisis of the Roman Empire in 235-238.
Mošnička, Martin ; Kepartová, Jana (advisor) ; Zdichynec, Jan (referee)
This thesis explores the period of crisis that the Roman Empire entered after the death of Alexander Severus, as described by the British historian and writer Harry Sidebottom in his three-part novel The Throne of Caesars: Iron and Rust, Steel and Blood, Fire and Sword. The work focuses primarily on the role of the army in the chaos of the third century AD. It contains questions of philosophy (Epicureans, Stoics, Pythagoreans), religion (traditional Roman and indigenous cults and superstitions), literature (knowledge of literature among intellectuals versus ordinary soldiers as obedient machines), the question of the feeling of superiority of the Romans compared to the defeated barbarians from the north, patriotism, careerism, egoism, self-sacrifice, friendship, propaganda, etc. Propaganda and manipulation of public opinion, so important for every single emperor, is then discussed in more detail in my work. The lives and evaluation of the significance of the works of those ancient authors (namely Héródiános, Aurelius Victor, Zósimos, Ammianus Marcellinus) are briefly described at the beginning of the work, from which important information on the topic can be obtained. I also consider it crucial to briefly introduce the military emperors to the reader (these are Alexander Severus, Maximinus Thrace,...
Ancient Mythology in the Trilogy Starcrossed of Josephina Angelini
Roudná, Karolína ; Kepartová, Jana (advisor) ; Zdichynec, Jan (referee)
This Bachelor thesis focuses on analysis of Ancient Mythology in the Starcrossed Trilogy of Josephina Angelini. The inspiration by ancient Greek mythology is evident throughout the series, as it's practically a transposition of the Trojan War into 21st century context. The characters are reincarnated mythical heroes of the Trojan War. The thesis contains a section dedicated to ancient Greek myths in general. The main goal of the thesis is to encapsulate all similarities, differences and elements received from the ancient Greek originals. The author accentuates the need for glossaries added into works with ancient Greek themes, since a reader who is not familiar with these might be rather confused by their adaptation in a completely different storyline. To achieve the abovementioned goal, the thesis provides literary-scientific context, definitions of key concepts, analysis of the narrator, composition, time space etc. Chapters containing transcribed interviews with book influencers provide readers' reception of the Starcrossed series on Czech literary scene and abroad. The author has performed analysis of the Starcrossed series by Josephine Angelini via comparing the series to, above all, Homer's Iliad. These works are further supplemented by literature on ancient Greek mythology and literary...
Roman Impact on Cherusci
Švitorková, Hana ; Kepartová, Jana (advisor) ; Zdichynec, Jan (referee)
This Bachelor Thesis is focused on the Roman impact on Cherusci in the period from the last two decades of the 1st century BC to 90 AC. The Thesis aims to determine the extent of the impact of the Roman-Cherusci relation on the tribe, which took a friendly as well as hostile form for several times during the researched period. First, the thesis provides an overview of the ancient literary and archaeological sources, of available information about the tribe itself, and of the history of Roman-Cherusci relations. The second part deals with the impact of the Roman presence in Germania on the power of Cherusci chieftains and aristocracy. The internal relations in the tribe, influenced by the Roman luxurious gifts and financial support of the Cherusci aristocrats, are researched. The next chapter focuses on the romanization of the chieftain sons on the example of Arminius and Flavus, the sons of Cherusci chieftain Segimer. The last part deals with the retinue of chieftains, with the Cherusci presence in the auxiliaries of the Roman army, with the Germanic personal guard of the emperors of the Julio-Claudian dynasty (the so-called Germani corporis custodes), and with the Roman impact on the Germanic warfare. In the research, the analysis of primary and secondary sources was used. The conducted research...
Roman Army and Its Changes in Late Antiquity
Lavický, Jeroným ; Kepartová, Jana (advisor) ; Zdichynec, Jan (referee)
The presented thesis focuses on the role of the army in the late Roman Empire and its changes compared to earlier stages. The work follows the period from the third century, when important military changes begin, until the fall of the Western Roman Empire, while paying attention to both the situation in the West and the East of the empire. The introduction briefly describes the development of the Roman army from its beginnings in the royal era to the period of the early principate, this chapter forms the basic context for understanding the examined changes in the era of the late empire. Reforms and changes in the organizational side of the army, the command structure, tactics and strategy as well as changes in the equipment and armament of the units are analyzed. Considerable space is left for clarifying the interaction of the Roman Empire with barbarian tribes and especially for evaluating the issue of the process of barbarization, where the methods of recruiting barbarians into the Roman army, the reasons for doing so and the consequences that barbarization brought with it are discussed. Another important aspect that the thesis focuses on is the analysis of the relationship between the emperor and the army, i.e. its changes in the late period compared to the early empire and the possible consequences of...
