Tato diplomová práce se zabývá krizovým obdobím, do kterého se Římská říše dostala po smrti Alexandra Severa, jak ho líčí britský historik a spisovatel Harry Sidebottom ve svém trojdílném románu Trůn Caesarů: Železo a Rez, Ocel a Krev, Oheň a meč. Práce se soustřeďuje především na úlohu armády v chaosu třetího století n. l. Jsou v něm otázky filozofické (epikurejci, stoikové, pythagorejci), náboženské (tradiční římské i domorodé kulty a pověry), literární (znalost literatury u intelektuálů kontra obyčejní vojáci coby poslušné stroje), otázka pocitu nadřazenosti Římanů oproti poráženým barbarům ze severu, patriotismus, kariérismus, egoismus, obětavost, přátelství, propaganda atd. Právě propaganda a manipulace veřejným míněním, tak důležitá pro každého jednoho císaře, je pak v mé práci probrána detailněji. Na začátku práce jsou krátce popsány životy a hodnocení významu těch děl starověkých autorů (jmenovitě Héródiános, Aurelius Victor, Zósimos, Ammianus Marcellinus), ze kterých je možno získat důležité informace k tématu. Považuji též za klíčové krátce seznámit čtenáře s vojenskými císaři (jedná se o Alexandra Severa, Maximina Thráka, Gordiana I., Gordiana II., Balbina, Pupiena a Gordiana III.), jejichž působení v inkriminované době hrálo nemalou úlohu jak pro tehdejší období zmatků, tak pro vývoj... This thesis explores the period of crisis that the Roman Empire entered after the death of Alexander Severus, as described by the British historian and writer Harry Sidebottom in his three-part novel The Throne of Caesars: Iron and Rust, Steel and Blood, Fire and Sword. The work focuses primarily on the role of the army in the chaos of the third century AD. It contains questions of philosophy (Epicureans, Stoics, Pythagoreans), religion (traditional Roman and indigenous cults and superstitions), literature (knowledge of literature among intellectuals versus ordinary soldiers as obedient machines), the question of the feeling of superiority of the Romans compared to the defeated barbarians from the north, patriotism, careerism, egoism, self-sacrifice, friendship, propaganda, etc. Propaganda and manipulation of public opinion, so important for every single emperor, is then discussed in more detail in my work. The lives and evaluation of the significance of the works of those ancient authors (namely Héródiános, Aurelius Victor, Zósimos, Ammianus Marcellinus) are briefly described at the beginning of the work, from which important information on the topic can be obtained.
