New peptides with antimicrobial activity isolated from the venom of the bumblebee Bombus pascuorum (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

Six new heptadecapeptides were isolated and synthesized by standard Fmoc solid phase peptide synthesistogether with several structural analogues. Antimicrobial activities were correlated with the peptides hydrophobicity, hydrophobic moment, alpha-helicity and HPLC retention time.

Distribution and degradation of oostatic peptides in the selected organs of flesh fly Neobellieria bullata was investigated using tritium labeled molecules. The degradation of peptides proceeded fast at both the amino and carboxy termini and resulted in formation of transient tetra and tripeptide sequences.

Heptadecapeptide amide H-Ile-Asn-Trp-Lys-Lys-Ile-Ala-Ser-Ile-Gly-Lys-Glu-Val-Leu-Lys-Ala-Leu-NH2 and a series of its shortened analogues were synthesized and tested for antimicrobial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and for the hemolytic activity.
