Sources of the Ukrainian Elite's Identity Problems
Žernov, Denis ; Voráček, Emil (advisor) ; Doubek, Vratislav (referee)
This thesis addresses identity issues of the Ukrainian elites using two parallel Ukrainian narratives. In search for conflict lines, we look at 20th ct. milestones which played a major part in the formation of the Ukrainian elites. An emphasis is placed on the modernization of Ukrainian society in 1920s and 1930s. We also analyze the impact of these two Ukrainian narratives on the formation of the Soviet nation using strong historical ties between the Ukrainian and the Russian nation. These ties still have an impact on the formation of Ukrainian identities; however, the conclusion of this thesis suggests that it will be possible to assess the definite shape of the Ukrainian identity only after a new supranational identity - similar to the Soviet one - has been shaped. KEY WORDS: ELITES MODERNIZATION NARRATIVE IDENTITY RUSSIAN UKRAINIAN SOVIET
Ideas on future Slovakia (Conceptions of Slovakia after the Great War 1914-1918)
Bandžuch, Tomáš ; Doubek, Vratislav (advisor) ; Just, Petr (referee)
The goal of this dissertation is to describe an evolution of visions of the Slovak future, as they were introduced during the Great War (1914-1918) by groups of Slovaks living mainly abroad. It strives to decide, which of these visions had a chance to become real and which were only fantasies without real political importance. To reach this goal it tries to describe Slovak relations to other relevant nations in pre-war years and also the position of Slovaks in their fatherland or abroad including the ideologies by which they were influenced. One of most decisive goals of this dissertation should be answering the question if the Czecho-Slovak orientation was the only alternative to the idea of Hungarian state for Slovak politicians, or if the victory of this conception in 1918 was just a result of unpredictable processes, and whether other conceptions had their chance to influence the Slovak future, too.

and key words This thesis is dealing with the foundation of the first Czechoslovakian constitution from 1920 and focusing on the role of Antonín Švehla in the process itself. The introductory parts dissert on the role of Antonín Švehla as an agrarian politician - his politics in the period before the formation of the Czechoslovakian Republic and consequently his politics during the first three years of the function of the new state. The next chapters analyze the actual foundation and acceptation of the constitution in 1920. In my thesis, I am concerned with an unofficial negotiation of constitution, the progress of the work of the constitutional Committee and the consequential discussion about constitutional model in the Revolutionary national assembly. I have chosen a procedure of working with a particular thematic aspects of the constitution and not the constitution as a complex. This method helps to highlight the friction between the concept of the constitution and Švehla's ideas. The chapters dealing with the constitution are ended by the evaluation of the content. The thesis ends up with the analysis of the role of Švehla as a politicial who worked on the creation of the constitution. Key words: constitution, Antonín Švehla, constitutional Committee, Revolutionary national assembly.
The origins of catholic political thought in life work of V. S. Štulc
Záškoda, Miloslav ; Doubek, Vratislav (advisor) ; Klementová, Eliška (referee)
The subject of this paper is the public role of the Catholic priest in the Czech national society of the 19th century, when the Catholic Church lost its ideological and influential position and when it had to face the process of secularization. The situation of the Catholic Church had changed radically as it became only one of many different cultural or political entities in that century and had to find new means of how to influence opinions of the people. This essay discusses the life and work of Václav Štulc (1814 - 1887), a Czech Catholic priest and an enthusiastic patriot. It describes three fundamental tendencies in his political thought. The first tendency in his work is associated with his role of representative of the Catholic Church and with his emphasizing the importance of religious values for the common good of society. Štulc's conservatism is based on very sharp criticism of the Enlightenment, revolutionary violence and the enlightened rule of Emperor Joseph II. Štulc urges all social classes to respect the basic laws and to maintain public order. Secondly, Štulc often refers to the relationship of the religious and national identities. Štulc is trying to unite the Catholic faith with the modern concept of the nation, challenging many prejudices about the Catholic Church and...
