The Czech-German border area: the image of the other
Kotrbatá, Ivana ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor) ; Brouček, Stanislav (referee) ; Moravcová, Mirjam (referee)
The aim of this doctoral thesis is to verify the basic hypothesis, which claims that the Czechs have stereotypical and biased attitudes towards the Germans. A part of the hypothesis is also a claim that opinions or behavior of the Czechs in relation to the Germans is then affected by these stereotypes and prejudices. In case of the verification of the hypothesis, the thesis attempts to analyze the most common stereotypes. At the same it also tries to determine where and what is their origin, whether it is possible to trace their development and formation and reveal factors involved in the formation of these stereotypes. In addition to this analysis, the thesis also focuses on whether and how these prejudices manifest themselves in everyday life in the Czech border region. A part of the thesis also concentrates on contemporary Czech-German relations, or how they are perceived and judged by the people living in the Czech border region. The thesis is based on the field research during which narrative priorities, narrations and attitudes of eighteen interviewed Czechs of different age, education, occupation and social background were identified and analyzed. The main methods of data collection were semi-structured interviews, biographical method and oral history. The research was conducted in the...

The History and Presence of the Affirmative Action in the USA, in The Czech Republic and other Countries
Štědroň, Jakub ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Brouček, Stanislav (referee) ; Sulitka, Andrej (referee)
The term affirmative action (U. S. English), or positive discrimination (British English) means positive steps taken to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, politics and business from which they had been historically excluded. In search for the roots of affirmative action I start at the very beginning of the US history describing institutionalized forms of slavery and later move on to segregation to demonstrate how deep and strong this exclusion was. Since the late 1960s this expression has been used to refer to policies that go beyond the simple prohibition of discrimination on grounds of race, national origin and sex in employment practices and educational system. These policies require further actions, affirmative actions, to make jobs and promotions and admissions to educational programs available to individuals from groups that have historically suffered from discrimination in gaining these opportunities or are, whether discriminated against or not by formal policies and informal practices, infrequently found in certain occupations or educational institutions and programs. In an effort to create an unprejudiced picture of this phenomenon of American modern society, I try to open my work for arguments of both sides, the proponents and the...
Vietnamese in Czechia and the World: Migration and Adaptation Tendencies
Kušniráková, Tereza ; Drbohlav, Dušan (advisor) ; Brouček, Stanislav (referee) ; Šatava, Leoš (referee)
The PhD thesis 'Vietnamese in Czechia and the world: migration and adaptation tendencies' sheds light on the development of international migration of the Vietnamese since the mid 20th century to the present with special emphasis on Czechia as a country of destination. The main aim is to identify the key factors that initiate international migration of the Vietnamese and how they determine main directions of these movements, affect migrants' and non-migrants' expectations and determine adaptation strategies. In this respect, the methodology of the paper is based on the combination of macro-level and micro-level approaches. Therefore, the thesis brings an analysis of main structural factors encouraging international migration of the Vietnamese such as economic development, economic and political reforms Đổi Mới and pro-emigration policy of the Vietnamese government; and also an analysis of actors' personal interpretations of these factors. The key part of the thesis is also identifying the transformation of importance of these factors depending on the stage of migration and on the socio-economic-political context of migration or migration-decision making. The paper stems from the analysis of available statistical data and legal documents, and results of three-year research, which was carried out...

Transformation of the national consciousness in the identity of immigrants from the selected countries of former Yugoslavia in Denmark
Šťastná, Petra ; Otčenášek, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Brouček, Stanislav (referee)
The thesis is concentrated on a diaspora from the former Yugoslavian countries, a special stress is put on the new generations. There are several factors which do influence the minorities - such as impact of a family, institutional, socio-cultural and historical atributes. Another important fact is Denmark's immigration and integration policy. Nevertheless, the formation of identity and belonging is highly affected by all mentioned. The analysis is held towards the transnationalism, integration/assimilation tendencies and hybridity in the behavior of the diaspora members. It should answer some general questions about the situation of ethnical minorities from the former Yugoslavia in this part of Europe as well as it should outline the distinction of these minorities in some neigboring countries. However, the current problematics of self- determination, mainly among the youth, should be examined too. Key words migration, acculturation, assimilation, ethnicity, Yugoslavia, Denmark

Language and etnicity in the Balkans and in Britain
Blažek, Jan ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee) ; Brouček, Stanislav (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of ethnic consciousness in the territories of the Balkans and of Great Britain by focusing on the tendencies towards ethnical inclusion (crossing of ethnical boundaries) and ethnical exclusion (strengthening of the above mentioned). Inspired by B. Anderson's definition of nation (nation = imagined community), the author has chosen the languages of the investigated areas as the actual subject of his research. In three chapters he has studied first the structural and lexicological aspect of the language, then the terminological one (study of ethnonyms) and finally the textual one (study of national myths and the language used to their description). The conclusion of the research described above clearly shows, that whereas English is being perceived as a highly inclusive language (also due to its grammatical straightforwardness and lexicological richness) by speakers of other native languages in Britain (be it the autochthon minorities or migrants), in the Balkans, on the other hand, languages are being perceived as an exclusive propriety of the given ethnic group, which may even lead to artificial differences being introduced in them. The approach prevailing in Great Britain is clearly the one fostering better inter-ethnic cohabitation....
