An analysis of the contemporary song texts in romani

My bachelor's thesis is a study of contemporary Romani musical texts. In particular, I focus on the thematic analysis of the texts, their compositional and linguistic style, as well as their function in present-day life. Romani song texts have always been one of the cultural attributes with which the cultural identity of Roma has been strengthened. The question I have posed is whether the texts of current songwriters still fulfill this function. I selected six Romani authors of song texts, who at the same time act as the musical interpreters of their own works. They are Mario Bihari, Jan Duzda, Marie Duzdova, Desiderius Duzda, Radoslav "Gipsy" Banga, and members of the band Gulo čar. They represent various musical genres and an age range between twenty-two and forty-four years. Original texts released on musical media after the year 2000 served as the material for the study. All of the analyzed texts, with their Czech translations, can be found in the appendix. In the chapter entitled "Thematic Analysis" I conclude that the most common themes in the analyzed texts have to do with human emotions, experiences and life events. Cíl práce ne ní v popisu objektivního a všeobecného pohledu na romskou hudbu a její nositele. Celá stať je naopak koncipována velmi individuálně a subjektivně. Individuálně proto, že se jedná o monografii jednoho konkrétního romského hudebníka. (Zde se sama nabízí kontroverzní otázka, co je "romská hudba" a následně kdo je "romský muzikant". Tu však sama etnomuzikologie nijak nevymezuje a neklade jí žádné striktní pomyslné hranice.) Individuálně z toho důvodu, že v podstatě jediným zdrojem informací byl hudebník sám. Cílem práce není srovnávat či hodnotit jeho výpovědi zvnějšku. Jde o pohled emický. Proto se zde také vyskytují informace, kterým hudebník sám přikládá důležitost a nač se zaměřuje. Some aspects in the culture of the Banat Rroma from the perspective of the Kalderash Rromani language in Romania

The presented thesis is concerned with the language of the Banat Rroma, the Kalderash Rromani language. The paper focuses on three topics: anthroponyms, language variance and speech etiquette. The paper endeavours to describe and analyze these topics looking at the perspective from which the three mentioned domains are seen and evaluated by the Banat Rroma themselves. The paper's first section outlines a brief history of the Rroma in Banat and their sociocultural and demographic characteristics. Based on the analysis of personal and group proper names, the chapter "Anthroponyms" provides a classification arising from their mutual hierarchical relationships, semantic motivation, as well as the functions such names perform. The next chapter, "Language varieties and speech styles", is concerned with the matter of bilingualism and diglossia, presenting the classification of speech styles and providing the description of the three most distinct styles. The third and final section, "Speech etiquette", analyses the three pairs of courtesy forms in the context of the communication situations in which they are used.

Analysis of Reasons Leading to Primary School Failures of Romany Children

The rigorous work deals with the reasons leading to primary school failures of Romany children. The empirical research focuses on the knowledge or the lack of knowledge of the native language - the Romany language and its potential influence at the initial lack of success of the Romany pupils. Further it deals with the issues of coexistence of the Romany community with the majority society and last but not least the extent to which the Romany language is being used and its future development or decline. A substantial part of the work focuses on the readiness, the school maturity and language equipment of the Romany pupils at the beginning of their school attendance and highlights the necessity of understanding, comprehension and acceptance of the Romany child by the Czech teacher so that he is able to follow his education as a part of the main educational stream together with other pupils.

Social perceptions of the Roma in Czechoslovakian and Czech cinema

Slovo umění je jedním z nejdůležitějších termínů, chceme-li zkoumat vzájemné vztahy mezi kulturou a společností. Umění je také jedním z prostředků utváření lidské identity. Pro menšiny jakéhokoliv zaměření se stává velmi podstatnou součástí života - na jedné straně je prostředkem k osobní reflexi kultury daného společenství a k její manifestaci před veřejností, na straně druhé může přispívat k dezinterpretaci a podporovat vžité stereotypy. Zdá se, že ze všech druhů umění je v tomto ohledu "nejnebezpečnější" právě film. Film se ze všech umění nejvíce může přiblížit realitě, a tím ji také nejsnáze zkreslit. Na rozdíl od jiných umění film nabízí další rozměr - nejedná se již jen o naše představy. Svět, který zobrazuje, je plně vykreslen, a tato schopnost usnadňuje manipulaci s recipientem. Zatímco autor knihy o Romech nás jednoduše zavede do romského prostředí a my se sžijeme s myšlenkou, že hlavní představitelé jsou Romové, v případě filmu se vynořují ještě další otázky, jako například, kde byl film natáčen a jsou-li herci skuteční Romové. Všechny tyto zdánlivé detaily nesmírně ovlivňují celý diskurz o daném filmu, o kinematografii zabývající se menšinami, a konečně přispívají i k diskusi o minoritách vůbec. Gitana between tradition and present times. (The position of women in particular communities of Catalan Gitanos in French Perpignan and environs)

Úvod V následující práci se pokusím popsat postavení ženy ve vybraných komunitách katalánských Gitanos ve francouzském Perpignanu a okolí. Budu vycházet především z terénního výzkumu, který jsem zde uskutečnila společně se dvěma spolužačkami na podzim 2004, vlastní poznatky budu doplňovat o informace z dostupné literatury a z materiálů, které jsem získala během dvouměsíčního pobytu ve francouzském Perpignanu. Téma bakalářské práce do jisté míry vychází ze situace, v níž jsem se společně s kolegyněmi v Perpignanu ocitla. Komunity katalánských Gitanos v Perpignanu a okolí jsou uzavřené a je velmi těžké do nich proniknout. Navíc je zde velmi striktně oddělen svět mužů a žen. Vzhledem k výše uvedeným skutečnostem pro nás bylo snazší proniknout do ženské společnosti, pravidelně jsme se se ženami setkávaly ve Sdružení gitanských žen (Association des femmes gitanes) v Perpignanu, vedly jsme rozhovory se ženami z obdobného sdružení v Montpellier, setkaly jsme se i s dalšími ženami z jiných komunit. Informátorky samy vypovídaly o svém postavení v komunitě a v rodině, o snaze své postavení v rámci komunity změnit. Během pobytu ve Francii jsme se setkaly s představitelkami "ženského emancipačního hnutí", míra emancipace, o niž ženy usilovaly, se v jednotlivých komunitách a napříč generacemi lišila.
