Vietnam close by and far away. Children of Vietnamese descent in Czech Republic form the perspective of transnationalism.
Svobodová, Andrea ; Janská, Eva (advisor) ; Baar, Vladimír (referee) ; Šatava, Leoš (referee)
This dissertation is based on a narrative analysis of eighteen life biographies of children of Vietnamese descent in Czech Republic. It shows that these young people lives are embedded in a "transnational social space", which spans between two geographical regions of Vietnam and Czech Republic, and which leaves them exposed to a set of social expectations, cultural values and patterns of human interaction, that are shaped by more than one political, economic and social system. It also describes how these people, through multiple connected social networks and social relationships, transform cultural practices, interpretations, experiences and identities, which deconstructs the idea of integrity between place, identity and culture. Although the primary aim of the work is to analyse how children of Vietnamese operate in transnationalized social and cultural contexts, transnational practices, such as homeland visits, kinship ties and sending remittances are also being explored. In doing so the children of Vietnamese migrants are neither perceived as "existing in vacuum" nor are their identities described as "deterritorialized". The work pays also attention to the question how their lives and identities are shaped on the backdrop of discursive fields and power relationships in particular localities. Key...

Zábranská, Agáta ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor) ; Hanuš, Josef (referee)
in English The diploma Thesis "Trends and Significance of the Migration of Foreign Students mainly from non-EU Countries in the Czech Republic and Europe." discusses the phenomenon of migration for study purposes from non-EU countries (mainly Russia, Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina) in the Czech Republic. The percentage of immigrants coming to study in Czech Republic has been growing and it constitutes an important tool for a positive development of the international cooperation. The aim of this work is to describe and analyze, based on the questionnaire method and specialized texts, the reasons for the choice of this type of migration, underling the administrative, economic and social issues that might be involved. Furthermore the objective is to evaluate the participation of qualified foreigners in the Czech labor market as well as to determine, presenting specific cases collected by a qualitative method, the human, cultural and social added value that they might gain by being awarded with an European diploma. Finally, in order to study the phenomenon from an anthropological perspective, the study attempts a comparative analysis of the academic mobility as a mean of temporary circular migration, enabling an optmized prediction of the current trends and tendencies while considering the issues of...
Discourse formation of collective identity: the clashing images of "Roma"
Mikuš, Marek ; Lozoviuk, Petr (advisor) ; Šatava, Leoš (referee)
This interdisciplinary work combines theoretical and methodological approaches of anthropology and discourse studies to explore current controversy in the Czech and Slovak Republic about the nature of the collective identity of Roma, reasons for their social problems and appropriate solutions thereof. The first position in the controversy, associated in particular with Romani studies and Romani ethnopolitical movement, sees all Roma as a part of an "ethnic group" or "nation", and connects their plight to "racial" discrimination and intolerance of their "differences". By contrast, the second position, held especially by some cultural anthropologists and non-governmental organizations, labels the first one as "primordialism" and deconstructs the notion of a unitary and natural "Romani nation". It argues that there is no necessary link between "Romani anthropological type", belonging to the modern Romani nation and belonging to some of the "traditional Romani cultures". Accordingly, it maintains that most inhabitants of urban ghettos are only socially classified as "Roma", and that their identity is derived mainly from their belonging to the "culture of poverty" or living in a situation of "social exclusion". So whereas the first side to the debate offers national emancipation, support for Romani national...

Herrmann, Richard ; Kašpar, Oldřich (advisor) ; Šatava, Leoš (referee)
This qualitative study strives to capture the strategies and motivations for emmigration of Czechoslovak citizens to former West Berlin between the years 1968 and 1970, describing it from emmigrants' perspective. The main focus of the study is an analysis of emmigration incentives and strategies utilized by the then Czechoslovak citizens, currently living in Berlin. The theoretical base for the study consists of the theory of collective historical memory, the problem of secondary and tertiary socialization, the (mal)adaptation to new host environments and the biographical approach to emmigration studies. The incentives and strategies of political emmigration are analyzed within the context of the political and social development between the years 1946 and 1970. The study is chronologically organized according to the following historical periods and political events: (1) the takeover of power by communists in 1946-1948, (2) the political persecutions of the 1950s, (3) the liberalization of the communist regime during the 1960s, (4) the events of Prague Spring, (5) the military intervention of the Warsaw Treaty countries, (6) the consolidation and normalization era, (7) the Czechoslovak citizens' mass emmigration between the years 1968 and 1970. Uig - local community
Školová, Markéta ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor) ; Pargač, Jan (referee)
Gaelic language revival is the focus of many linguists and anthropologists. There are many generalisations written about this subject. This study is primarily based on a case study of the Uig community on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. With the use of historical and current descriptions of the community, problems are outlined associated with the Gaelic language in this mainly Gaelic speaking community. Despite the high number of recorded Gaelic speakers in Uig (67%, Census 2001), I consider this not a true reflection of the number of people who can use Gaelic daily. There are still many families who underestimate and therefore undermine the status of their language, despite the official support of Gaelic Education by the Scottish Government. Interestingly, there is an evident passivity of parents to enrol their children into Gaelic-medium units at the Uig Primary School yet, many parents do consider Gaelic as part of their cultural heritage. In Uig, a rural area, the number of higher educated inhabitants is minimal. Very lately, a lack of housing, has appeared as a problem and the local Community Council must deal with it. Many of the people questioned in this study are witnessing the language shift towards English in their own families. There seems to be some progress towards a reversing language...

Urbišová, Julie ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor) ; Krupková, Jaroslava (referee)
Diploma thesis "Mardi Gras as a phenomenon of New Orleans local culture" describes the tradition of carnival in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Carnival in Louisiana is a very old festival - that is why I described history of this festival until its present form. Carnival in United States of America is connected to people with French heritage, who are known as Creoles. I also explained creole culture. During the years, carnival was changed, influenced and enriched many times thanks to many different people, who moved into New Orleans. I also considered their important role in Mardi Gras. I visited New Orleans many times and I was able to make terrain research during couple carnival seasons. I was also able to interview many interesting people who are part of carnival. I used the results of my participating observation and interviews to describe carnival in present form. This festival is still very popular not only for New Orleans inhabitants, but also for many tourists from all around the world. I also wrote about Mardi Gras from economical point of view.

Introduced diploma thesis presents the results of the research project which investigated the impact on the national identity. The goal of the research project was to find out with a help of the quality research, in detail an anchored theory, the central phenomenon in the perception of the national identity. The results of the anchored theory shows, that this phenomenon is level of adaptation of the individual on the environment respectively level of acculturation and flowingly level of reintegration. Intervene conditions, such as strategy of the handling of the stress situations, work success or family and friends' bounds also influence this phenomenon. Main context line in this direction presents emigration and re-emigration of the individual with all the possible causes and intervene conditions. Important part of the context line is the fact of the leaving of the individual itself, including his or hers preparation for leaving the country.
