Spanish vowels in Czech students' interlanguage

(English) The dissertation explores the vowel system of Czech L3 Spanish, focusing on three facets of its architecture: vowel quality (following SLM by Flege 1995, 1999, 2003), vowel quantity and vocalic sequences between words. Preliminary studies (Čechová 2013, 2014) suggest that there might be some evidence for the Mechanism of Equivalence in Czech L3 Spanish, since the vowel spaces of both languages consist of the same categories, with different phonetic realizations. Hence, the more similar the sounds are, the harder it is to capture the relevant difference, necessary to attain native-like pronunciation. Vowel quantity, being traditionally associated with the phonological feature of length in Czech (Palková 1994), is not present in Spanish, and compensating for that property, some Czech speakers tend to pronounce accented syllables with extraordinarily longer durations. Finally, vowel sequences in Spanish are usually subjetct to resyllabification, whereas Czech prefers glottalization to keep morphemes of words separated. These predictions were tested in 22 university Czech students with advanced level of Spanish (C1-C1). Subsequent analysis revealed consistent inclination towards L1 in terms of vowel quality, in less extent in vowel quantity, and although the prevalecent strategy for majority...
Phonetic Features of Cuban Spanish

This thesis examines selected phonetic phenomena of the Spanish spoken in Cuba, providing a theoretical overview of them in current literature and, consequently, giving some evidence of their presence in Cuba with factors that are likely to affect them, based on recordings of native Cuban speakers. The paper is divided into two parts: in the theoretical part, important phonetic changes relevant to consonants and vowels are described, including how, where and under what circumstances they occur. In the experimental part, the paper deals with five particular phenomena (seseo, aspiration and elision of /s/, aspiration of /x/, yeísmo, lambdacism), that have a great impact on the realization of Spanish consonants, in light of three variables (type of discourse, geographical classification, education). Temporal infinitives in Spanish

The purpose of the following work is to map the most frequent infinitive forms of temporal phrases in Spanish and their Czech counterparts. The thesis is divided into the theoretical and the practical part. The aim of the theoretical part is defining substance of the term temporal infinitive in connection with three concrete prepositions tras, hasta, al and their unstaible structure, including a theoretical account of Czech affixes and infinitival phrases with preposition. The second part is focussed on the most frequent temporal infinitives and their translation into Czech language, using the online Spanish corpus CREA and a parallel Spanish- Czech sub-corpus (limited to fiction only), created specifically for this analysis in the InterCorp. Theoretical part of this paper generally discusses adjectives, the graduation of adjectives and the absolute superlatives in Spanish and Czech. The theoretical part of this work is based on the language theories of the Spanish Royal Academy and the Spanish and Czech linguists who are devoted to this topic. Characteristics and use of student slang in Spain and Hispanic America

The thesis is focused on a student slang in Spain and Hispanic America. In the theoretical part we describe standard and non-standard language focusing attention on slang. We describe the student slang especially from a lexicological point of view, so we present the most frequent processes of word formation and also some examples of vocabulary. Then we mention some specifics of slang in Hispanic America. In the practical part we present a research that shows some examples of vocabulary of real spanish students. On the basis of theirs answers we determine conclusions (processes of word formation of slang expressions, differences between Hispanic America and Spain etc.).
