Toby's Room by Pat Barker - the translation and stylistic analysis of three chapters of the novel

The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to point out the most frequent problems the translators tackle during the translation from the English to the Czech language. This work is divided into two parts. The first one involves my translation of the first three chapters of the novel Toby's Room written by the English author Pat Barker. The second section, the theoretical one, is devoted to the analysis of the translation and particularly to the most common translation difficulties springing from morphological, syntactic and stylistic differences between the two languages mentioned above. The analysis of this part is based on the quotes from the theoretical literature, especially from works by J. Levý, Z. Kuffnerová and D. Knittlová, and shows to what extent the first part of the work follows the translation methods recommended by these authors.

Aspects and Instruments of Courtesy in Communication in Swedish and Czech

The aim of the dissertation is to examine the approach to politeness in Swedish and in Czech and to compare its features in both languages. In the theoretical part there are presented the most influential approaches to politeness. The next two chapters focus on practical examples. In the first of these there are summarized linguistic means which are used to express politeness in Czech, and they are compared with Swedish. The second one deals with several specific speech acts, in which courtesy applies. The different ways of expressing politeness in Czech and Swedish are described on the base of the literature and also on my own questionnaire. Not only the spoken but also the written form of the communication is ranged in the dissertation. Spoken Danish in the Contemporary Danish Literature and its Translation into Czech

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the methods used by translators when translating spoken language in contemporary Danish fiction into Czech. In the first chapter, the Czech translation tradition is defined. This tradition influences Czech usage and tendencies. The second chapter introduces the features of stylized language reflected in literature written in Czech. As will be shown, these are mainly lexicological and morphological features and related stylistical means. The following chapters are devoted to the analysis of individual features of stylized language and their translation into Czech. Discussed are loanwords, diminutives, expletives, morphological changes, realia and politeness. The translated units are compared with Czech translation tradition and literature written in Czech.
