State of the art speech features used during the Parkinson disease diagnosis
Bílý, Ondřej ; Smékal, Zdeněk (referee) ; Mekyska, Jiří (advisor)
This work deals with the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease by analyzing the speech signal. At the beginning of this work there is described speech signal production. The following is a description of the speech signal analysis, its preparation and subsequent feature extraction. Next there is described Parkinson's disease and change of the speech signal by this disability. The following describes the symptoms, which are used for the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (FCR, VSA, VOT, etc.). Another part of the work deals with the selection and reduction symptoms using the learning algorithms (SVM, ANN, k-NN) and their subsequent evaluation. In the last part of the thesis is described a program to count symptoms. Further is described selection and the end evaluated all the result.
Characteristics of the vowels in German language compared to those in the Czech language
Černá, Stanislava ; Nečasová, Pavla (advisor) ; Zeman, Dalibor (referee)
Characteristics of the wovels in German language compares to those in the Czech language Annotation in the english language My thesis explores characteristics of the vowels in German language and compares them to those in the Czech language. The thesis is devided into the following parts: introduction, theoretical part, practical part and the ending. Introduction summarizes the reasons that made me choose this particular topic, it presents the literature and my opinion on why phonetics is such an important part of communication, my expectations and the description of my work. Theoretical part consists of several chapters: a)characteristics of german vowels, how they are devided according to the basic classification (the position of the tongue, quality, quantity, labialization) and according to other clasiffications (stress/reduction, participation of the nasal cavity and the description of the individual vowels and diphtongs) b)characteristics of czech vowels, how they are devided according to the basic classification (the position of the tongue, quality, quantity, labialization) and according to other clasiffications (stress/reduction, participation of the nasal cavity and the description of the individual vowels and diphtongs) c)most common problems with pronunciation for non-native speakers which are...
Russian vowel system in comparison with Czech
Hušek, Jan ; Nazarenko, Liliya (advisor) ; Žofková, Hana (referee)
The aim of the bachelor's thesis is to compare the articulation and distribution of Czech and Russian vowels and on the basis of differences devise a suitable way of articulation of Russian vowels for Czech learners. The thesis is divided into two parts; the first one describes the articulation of vowels, the differences in quality and quantity in both languages and quality changes caused by suprasegmental language units with an accent on reductions of the 1st and 2nd degree in Russian. The second part offers a system of phonetic exercises designed in order to improve the articulation of Russian vowels which is primarily intended for Czech pupils. Key words phonetics, phonology, speech sounds, vowel
Phonotactic framework of the Czech word and stress-group
Churaňová, Eliška ; Volín, Jan (advisor) ; Palková, Zdena (referee)
This master thesis provides a relatively detailed description of the consonant-vowel structure of standard spoken Czech. The first part covers approaches to and findings on the combinatorial system and distribution of sound units in speech; aspects of continuous speech segmentation into intonation phrases and stress groups, phonotactics of languages in general and Czech in particular, and speech rhythm are also addressed. Recordings of 12 professional speakers of Czech - comprising 6639 words and 5368 stress groups in total - have been used to create data sets that have enabled the author to describe CVCV structures of Czech words and stress groups. The results of this research present frequencies of words and stress groups and their relations to word-class dimension, frequencies of phones in words and stress groups; in this respect, both syllabic liquids and glottal stops have been taken into account. Further, the thesis includes an overview of the most frequent CVCV patterns in words and stress groups and their variability with regard to word classes. The final part focuses on how frequently consonants, vowels and their pairs and trios occur at different places within a unit. The results are continuously compared both between themselves and with the research that used the larger SYN2005 written...
Vowel alternations in related words
SVOBODOVÁ, Sandra
This bachelor thesis deals with vowel alternations in stressed syllables of related words that are not indicated by changes of spelling. The first part defines terms such as the syllable, lexical stress and word boundary which are essential as the theoretical framework. The second part is practical, describing the conditions under which vowel alternations occur. The key part is a list of expressions which contain the vowel change explored.

Syllable nucleus duration as a signal of foreign accent by L2 Russian speakers of Czech
Pinchuk, Oleksandr ; Zíková, Magdalena (advisor) ; Confortiová, Helena (referee)
The bachelor thesis 'Syllable nucleus duration as a signal of foreign accent by L2 Rus- sian speakers of Czech' focuses on realization of word accent in the Czech speeches of Russian native speakers. Through comparison of the duration values of syllable nuclei in selected words among Czech and Russian speakers, we tried to find a possible link between the vowel duration and perception of the Russian realization of accent as a marked one. This thesis consists of a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part, which has been worked out on the basis of the professional literature studied, we deal with factors affecting the syllable accent and function of vowel duration in Russian and Czech. The practical part is de- voted to analysis of audio recordings, which comprises selection of words for instrumental analysis, manual segmentation of phones in selected words and processing of data on vowel duration. Based on the results obtained, we further compared the duration of vowels among Czech vs. Russian speakers, depending on position of the vowel in a word, phonological length of the vowels and the syllable accent. The realization of selected words among Russian speakers was confronted with the results of a perceptual test. Analysis of the audio recordings showed that the syllable nucleus...
Consonantal and vocalic differences in Czech English with reduced and enhanced foreignness
Pojarová, Veronika ; Volín, Jan (advisor) ; Weingartová, Lenka (referee)
The objective of this thesis is to identify those features of the Czech accent in English that are the most salient in the perception of the Czech listener and that may disturb the communication process. The purpose of the introductory chapter is to familiarize the reader with the subject of the foreign accent, to provide a brief summary of the current state of research and to introduce a series of empirical studies. The research part of the thesis analyzes the individual realizations of the selected speech sounds /θ, ð, ŋ, r, w, æ, ɜː/ and ventures to draw meaningful conclusions from the results. The material analyzed consists of a total of 3568 speech sound tokens, recorded by 9 male and 19 female speakers. Each respondent produced two recordings, one in the British standard mode and another where the speaker imitated the Czech foreign accent. The 3568 tokens were individually rated and the two modes were then compared for each speaker. The results showed /r/ to be favoured by the largest number of speakers as an indicator of the Czech accent, while /θ, ð, ŋ/ often had the same rating in both modes. However, additional factors such as speaker proficiency and number of tokens from individual speech sounds must be taken into consideration before any final conclusions can be drawn from the raw data....
The duration of stressed and unstressed vowels in English speakers of Spanish
Kubánková, Eliška ; Skarnitzl, Radek (advisor) ; Šaldová, Pavlína (referee)
The thesis discusses the topic of word stress in Spanish and its acoustic correlates. The fact that studies in the last decades have shown conflicting opinions regarding the subject demonstrates the complexity of the phenomenon. Stress is not only language-specific, but also bound to context. When acquiring a second language, speakers have the tendency to transmit the phonetic and phonological system of their mother tongue to the target language. The aim of the thesis is to examine the acoustic correlate of duration in the Spanish of English speakers, considering the impact of language transfer. Twelve English speakers were recorded speaking Spanish. The duration of vowels in both stressed and unstressed syllables was measured in disyllabic, trisyllabic and quadrisyllabic words with different positions of the stressed syllable. The results indicated variation across stress schemes. Overall, a longer duration of the vowel in stressed syllable was found in disyllabic and trisyllabic oxytone words, and in quadrisyllabic paroxytone words. In trisyllabic paroxytone and proparoxytone words, the relative difference of vowel durations between stressed and unstressed syllables was less significant, likely due to the tendency of final syllable lengthening, which was recorded in all word types. No significant...
