Elements are important components of atmospheric aerosols. Heavy metals are known environmental pollutants due to their toxicity and their ability to accumulate in the human body. Heavy metals can exhibit toxicological afects even in trace amounts.
Elements' bioaccessibility and oxidative potential of urban aerosol

Atmospheric aerosols (Particulate Matter, PM) have significant impact on health and environment. The ability of aerosol to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the widely proposed mechanisms related to the negative effects of aerosol on human health. Oxidative stress, caused by the production of ROS, is associated with several cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.\nThe capacity of aerosol to produce ROS is also called oxidative potential (OP). Although ROS generation capacity of PM exhibits a good correlation with PM mass concentration, it may depend more on physico-chemical properties of PM. Elements bound to PM play a significant role in contributing to the OP of aerosol. Exposure to elements was linked with several health issues (e.g. respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, asthma, inflammatory effects, lung cancer).

Characterization of organic compounds in PM1 aerosol in Kladno in winter 2016

In this work the organic compounds and organic markers used for the identification of main aerosol sources were measured in PM1 aerosol in a small town (Kladno-Švermov) near Prague. Monosaccharide anhydrides and resin acids (emissions from biomass combustion) were found especially. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (emissions from traffic and incomplete combustion), hopanes (traffic, coal combustion), steranes (traffic), saccharides and alkanes were other groups of analysed organic compounds.

Contribution summarizes the concentrations of monosaccharide anhydrides, resin acids, methoxyphenols, monosaccharides, disaccharides, sugar alcohols, alkanes, hopanes, steranes and polyaromatic hydrocarbons in PM1 aerosols in small town Celakovice in winter. According to concentrations of organic markers, the identification of emission sources in Celakovice is discussed.
Comparison of Size Distribution of Water Soluble Ions in Aerosols in Prague and Vienna

Seasonal variation in concentrations of metals and ions in urban aerosol in Brno and Šlapanice

Urban aerosol particles in the size fraction PM1 were collected in Brno and Šlapanice in winter and summer of 2009 and 2010. Aerosols were analysed for ions and metals. Local traffic in summer and coal and wood combustion during household heating in winter were identified as the main emission sources of aerosols in both towns. Secondary aerosol components formed a significant part of aerosol during the whole year.
Vlastnosti a zdroje předměstského pozaďového atmosférického aerosolu v Praze

A comprehensive aerosol characterization was perfprmed for a 15-month period at Suchdol, a suburb in the NW of Prague. PM, mass concentrations, mass and number size distributions, PM10 chemical composition and the main factors influencing the PM10 concentrations were determined. The regional air pollution during low mixing periods was found to be the most important factor influencing the local levels of air pollution.
