Problems in listening comprehension in Czechs lessons by German native speakers

The thesis called ``Problems in listening comprehension in Czech lessons by German native speakers{\crqq} characterizes German and Czech language, especially their different traits entering teaching Czech as a foreign language. It maps typical phenomenon in Czech courses at Kepler{\crq}s University in Linz. The thesis deals with effective use of listening texts and their influence on getting further language skills and proficiency in Czech lessons for foreigners. The practical part of the document puts stress particularly on songs that help to teach and learn the language. They are arranged according to the mistakes which were made by German speakers in Czech lessons so that these mistakes were eliminated. The document also contains an evaluation of efficiency of the songs in a form of questionnaire for Austrian students and an interview with four Czech teachers at Kepler{\crq}s university.

Facts in the textbooks of Czech for foreigners

The aim of my work is to analyze Czech language textbooks for foreigners in terms of inclusion and presentation of cultural studies. In the theoretical part I attempt to outline the development of Czech courses for foreigners and Czech as a foreign language, as well as summarize the current knowledge of area studies and explain their interconnectedness with the socio- cultural competence. In the second, practical part of my work, I focus on whether facts in various Czech language textbooks for foreigners are presented implicitly or explicitly, whether the facts presented in contrast with the culture are expected from the student and whether the facts in these textbooks are practiced and tested. In addition, I tried to capture the presence or absence of geographical information, historical information, information regarding cultural characteristics of the Czech and their lifestyle, information about English and its development, information regarding speech courtesy and behaviour, information regarding Czech literature, art, science, sports, Czech food, information regarding Czech politics and other possible facts. Realia in Textbooks of Czech for Foreigners

Resumé This master thesis is focused on description and summary of information about Czech politics, geography, sport, culture and Czech character which may be met by foreigner in selected textbooks for foreigners. The goal is to determine whether and how these findings correspond to the research about Czech culture and differences between national cultures, done by some scientists. The aim is to provide information in which way are shown in selected textbooks topics as power distance, role of man an woman in society, how are in textbooks described people from the point of age, if there is taken shape of competitiveness or cooperation, how the Czech ethnics is described, view on own history, what is the image of foreigners in textbooks and how is presented Czech culture. Works wonders whether the manner and content of the information presented about Czech culture can be understood by a foreign ethnic group, which is currently living in the Czech Republic.

Application of translation in education of the Czech language for francophone speakers

The thesis deals with the possibilities of the use of translation in education of the Czech language for francophone speakers. The thesis aims to analyse the use of translation in the textbooks of Czech for francophone speakers, in particular, to examine the types and representation of translation exercises in selected textbooks and to observe the use of communication-oriented translation exercises. Based on the analysis, the thesis formulates didactic recommendations that could contribute to more adequate use of translation in foreign language teaching, or rather in teaching Czech as a foreign language. The partial objective is to monitor the attitude of students to translation in teaching Czech as a foreign language through a questionnaire survey.

Silence is silver, speech is golden. Developing speaking skills in current textbooks of Czech for foreigners

This thesis focuses on the opportunities for developing speaking skills in teaching Czech for foreigners at the B1 level. In its theory section, historical and contemporary approaches in language teaching are introduced with special attention given to speaking skills and communicative language teaching. Subsequently the thesis presents an overview of the present state of research in the field of speaking as a process and a complex skill and a classification of speaking activities. The requirements placed on the oral communication of the students at B1 level by the Common European Framework are also laid out. In the analysis, selected textbooks of Czech for foreigners are examined to determine what opportunities the textbooks offer for the development of speaking skills. At the conclusion of the analysis the respective textbooks are compared and improvements to existing speaking activities are proposed to meet the findings of the modern language teaching methodology.

Life and Institutions in Czech Textbooks for Foreigners in Terms of Development of Intercultural Competence

Life and Institutions are some of the key factors of any culture. When it comes to successful communication with other cultures, Intercultural competence is crucial. The study of Life and Institutions should therefore by a mandatory part of teaching Czech as a foreign language. Based on extensive analysis, the thesis examines how Czech Life and Institutions are portrayed in select textbooks for foreigners reaching level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The outcome of the thesis is not only a detailed charting of Life and Institutions found in textbooks of Czech language for foreigners, but also a set of major findings based on the initially proposed questions. The analysis of textbooks is based on theoretical findings, which are introduced in the first part of the thesis and which form the necessary framework for the research part of the thesis. Developing socio-cultural competence of students and selected textbooks of Czech for foreigners

The presented thesis focuses on the analysis of selected Czech for foreigners textbooks in terms of socio-cultural competence. In the first three chapters the term of socio-cultural competence is explained and its definition in the Common European Framework of Reference and in the descriptions of reference levels A1, A2, B1 and B2 for Czech is examined. Chapter four deals with a chosen research method - criteria catalogue. In chapter five selected textbooks (Česky, prosím I, Čeština pro cizince: Úroveň B1, Čeština pro cizince: Úroveň B2, Čeština pro středně a více pokročilé, Čeština pro život, Čeština pro život 2, Mluvme česky) are analyzed separately and in chapter six individual results of previous examinations are compared with regard to how the publications contribute to the development of socio-cultural competence of students. 1
