The view of contemporary Christians on superstition
Šindelářová, Markéta ; Zimmermannová, Marie (advisor) ; Přibyl, Stanislav (referee)
The thesis is based on the experience of the author with various approaches of today's Christians to popular piety and superstitions in the context of their life and faith. At he beginning of the text questions are raised concerning maturity of these Christians' faith. In order to facilitate answers materials were gathered and processed for reflection such as: examples of accepted superstitions and practiced manifestations of popular piety; similar behaviours recorded in the Holy Writ; statements of the teaching authority of the Church regarding superstitions and popular piety manifestations; results of the theological field of catechetics concerning maturing in faith and its support in catechesis. The main method of solving the questions is a qualitative research using a questionnaire. The core of the thesis is the analysis of answers that are put into context of understanding maturity in faith and impulses for catechesis - catechesis being the instrument of the Church for promoting religious education aiming at maturity in faith.

This thesis examines ritualized behavior, further more widen on the issue of ritualized behavior in sport. After describing the theoretical framework of this problem, the research, which is a part of the thesis, focuses on the rituals more specifically. Attention is paid to ritual behavior that athletes practice in relation to their sport and especially to performance they bring. Research is concerned about behavior which is individual. The main aim of the research is to create a classification of ritualized behavior based on individual reasoning of this behavior by its participants and at the same time based on Max Webers theory of behavior. Other findings show what are the functions of this specific behavior of athletes or how the ritualized behavior varies across different groups like gender and if the sport is individual or collective. Research has showed up that classification of the ritualized behavior is dual because the reasonings of athletes are dual, too. In the first case athletes do rituals because 1) they saw someone to do that or someone told them to do it, or 2) they did it once and it proved to them so they started to do it every time. The second way of reasoning says that athletes behave this way to 1) win or do the best, or/and 2) optimalized their psychological state. The function of...

Are Czechs superstitious or the effect of Friday the 13th in accidents on Czech highways
Koucká, Lucie ; Hronza, Martin (advisor) ; Rod, Aleš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to find out whether Friday the thirteenth as a chosen representative of the superstition has an influence to the number of traffic accidents in the Czech Republic. The hypothesis that is being verified is that on Friday the thirteenth, drivers will be more cautious resulting in less accidents. Based on the five year long time series the model is estimated using the ordinary least squares with robust standard errors where the endogenous variable is daily number of car accidents. The exogenous variables are Friday the thirteenth, the public holidays, the precipitation, the average daily temperatures and the gas prices. The "Friday the thirteenth" variable turned out as statistically non-significant. Based on the results of the econometric analysis we can reject the hypothesis of this thesis. This conclusion was further confirmed by the results of the survey conducted.
