This bachelor thesis deals with the conception of loyalty in Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. The objective of this work is to define the abstract term of loyalty and analyse two stories from Le Morte d'Arthur, in which loyalty plays a key role. This thesis also briefly introduces chivalry and personage of legendary king Arthur, due to better understanding and orientation in Malory's book.

The Ideal of the Knight in Old Bohemian texts Kronika o Štilfrídovi and Rada otce synovi

The main goal of the thesis is to explore and describe the notion of ideal knighthood in particular works of the Czech High Middle Ages literature, a chivalric short story Kronika o Štilfrídovi and an educative versed composition Rada otce synovi. These works were written approximately during the same period. Subsequently, the analysis of the texts will uncover textual strategies defining the chivalric code connected with the ideal knighthood. Finally, the author is going to compare different genres and the effectivity of their textual strategy with depiction of knighthood.

Textual interpretation of the Song of Roland

This MA thesis deals with the text analysis of the Song of Roland. The text analysis focuses in detail on the formal, content, narrative and symbolic aspects of the Song of Roland. All those features are in the context of the literary and historical frame. The Song of Roland is one of the oldest literary pieces of French literature. It is the most famous heroic song belonging to the "Chanson de geste" and it was created in the 11th century. The main characters of the heroic poem are Charles the great, his nephew Roland, loyal friend Olivier, traitor Galeon and pagan king Marsil. The Song of Roland explores not only the family and friend relations, but the important topics are also betrayal and desire for fortune and glory. The Song deals with the matter of faith being asserted in the way which is typical for the middle ages. The story, which takes part in Spain, where the French have been besieging the pagan fort of Zaragoza for seven years, is very interesting from the historical aspects, but were more interested in the narrative - textual aspects, in which we tried to explore the relationships between the narrators. Chivalry in Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales"

1 Thesis abstract The thesis is concerned with the reflection of chivalry and chivalric culture in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and with the relation of his testimony to the social reality of the late Middle Ages. Chapter 1 introduces the chosen topic in relation to the specific character of the Tales, of the context of the period, and of Chaucer's life. It specifies the aim of the thesis, deals with its limitations, and outlines the criteria and the structure of the analysis. Chapter 2 presents the origin and the development of the knight along with the formation of the code of chivalric virtues and the literary constituent of the phenomenon of chivalry until the end of the fourteenth century and identifies two fundamental chivalric archetypes in the characters of the Knight and the Squire from "The Prologue". Chapter 3 pursues manifestations of chivalry throughout the Tales across genres except romances and analyses their reflection with respect to the narrators of the tales. The king and the presentation of king majesty in Arthurian legends

(in English): This thesis is dedicated to the medieval Arthurian legends and their authors, especially to Gildas, Geoffrey of Monmouth, Chrétien de Troyes and Thomas Malory. On the basis of their works is here reconstructed presentation of the king and his majesty, the phenomenon of chivalry and the role of women at the court and off the court. There is also considered the role of Christianity and paganism in legends and specific aspects related to both religions, such as Glastonbury Abbey, Holy Grail, Avalon, Merlin and many others.

The Ideal of Chivalrous Sovereign. The Case of Czech Medieval Alexandrian Epic

My final thesis, based on study of primary and secondary sources, is focused on the idea of sovereign around 1300 AD. Old-Czech poem Alexandreida and German version Alexander of Ulrich von Etzenbach are used as primary repository of information. Thesis follows both of them and in their comparison shows, how the idea was formulated. Final thesis deals also with works of historians, literary historians and German studies related to its topic. The goal is not an linguistic analysis but to evaluate the poems as an historiographic source, on which we can study medieval notions of rulers and their role in society. Second main task for this final thesis is to reconstruct niveau of bohemian court surrounding King of Bohemia at the end of 13th century, where the poems were originally written. In the end, thesis describes so called "court culture" in the relation to both of Alexandrian poems and their influence in bohemia society.

Literary representation of knightly ideal in Bohemian of High Middle Ages

The aim of this work is to deal with concept of ideal knight in seleceted Old Bohemian literary work of High Middle Ages in genre so called hints. The name of this composicion is Rada otce synovi. By means of literary analysis we will try to examine textual strategies which defined central features of knight ethic. We will also try to find the ideal representative of knighthood and other ideals connected with it as well as circumstances which took part in creating phenomenon of kighthood in Bohemical area.

The ideal of knight and knighthood in medieval Czech literature

6 Abstract The thesis is focused on research on the ideal of chivalry and conception of the ideal knight in the medieval literary sources which were written in Czech. Based on the analysis of chivalric rhymed epic and selected chivalric short stories and a comparison of each character of the ideal knights the thesis determines the set of the most important attributes which contribute to formation of the ideal of knighthood. The ideal of knighthood comprises not only virtues such as knight's internal traits, qualities and skills, but the attributes which are rather external as well. The thesis provides mainly the closer analysis of honour, prowess and loyalty, which represent the central concepts of the chivalric ethic. It also deals with the conception of endurance, nobility, wisdom, generosity, piety and justice as other possible attributes of the ideal representative of knighthood.
