The 2016 Democratic Party presidential primary elections
Laksarová, Veronika ; Kýrová, Lucie (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
The US presidential election in 2016 is a very important event not only for America itself, but for the whole world as well due to the American influence. This thesis focuses on the process of candidate's nomination for the general election, thus on the primary election of the Democratic Party. The topic of the primary elections is limitedly reflected in the Czech environment not only by specialized literature, but also by the media, mainly due to their time-consumption, complexity and lack of similarity to the Czech system. For these reasons, the whole system of primary elections represents the first part of the thesis. The practical part of the thesis is aiming to analyse political attitudes and programs of selected democratic candidates in 2016 - Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Selected candidates are compared in the three thematic areas that voters considered as the most important according to pre-election surveys in 2016. The areas include the economy and employment, national security and healthcare. The aim of the thesis, besides of the enlightening of the primary election system and the comparison of candidates, is to answer the hypothetical question whether or not Bernie Sanders could have influenced the result of the general election in the case he would have won the primary elections....

Udržal, Jan ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
The divisive primary hypothesis suggests a "hard fought" primary in one party harms it's prospects in the general election. However it remains unclear what exactly constitutes such a divisive primary. This thesis is a contribution to the strand of literature examining this issue. Specifically it follows the idea that divisiveness is primarily driven by the negativity of the campaign. Therefore this paper utilizes the results of content analysis of primary election debates on the framework of functional political campaign discourse as a measure of divisiveness. The results suggest, that the Democratic primary 2016 indeed ranks among the more divisive primaries studied to date. However, when those results are compared with republican debates, it is shown that it's primary elections were significantly more divisive. The party which could have been harmed more by the "hard fought" primary, was hence the Republican party. This finding is in contrast to the traditional operationalization of divisiveness, which would have deemed both campaigns to be equally divisive. Additionally, topics of contention among the Democratic party candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton were analysed.

U.S. Primary Elections
Mertová, Viktorie ; Kotábová, Věra (advisor) ; Landovský, Jakub (referee)
During the first stage of the U. S. presidential nomination process, primary elections are the predominant mechanism which the political parties apply to choose their candidates. In the 20th century, primaries became a common practice of the parties, which is considered to have made the nomination process more democratic. Despite that, there are several phenomena related to the primary elections which are considered to be problematic. The goal of this bachelor thesis is to analyze these controversial aspects of primaries. The thesis covers the nomination process of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party and attempts to emphasize the negative implications which the process of presidential nominations of these parties entails. In this case, the phenomena disadvantaging one of the actors of primaries (a group of voters, a type of candidate or one of the political parties) are considered to be negative. Based on the analysis of these phenomena, it is concluded which of them is potentially the most dangerous and the how it could be dealt with.

Pistulková, Petra ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Faturová, Marie (referee)
This work analyzes the use of political marketing of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in Democratic Party primary elections 2008. Theoretical definition of political marketing is followed by a description of main characteristics of presidential candidates (image, support from celebrities and family and the use of media). Following part deals with primary elections themselves, with decisions made by Obama and Clinton and their outcome on exit polls. The goal of this work is to answer the question: What were the key elements that lead to the victory of Barack Obama and how did he succeed in winning over Hillary Clinton, who was considered to be the frontrunner to win?

The aim of my thesis is to analyze the process of the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election and identify the factors that had the biggest influence on the election results. The paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter describes the rules for electing the U.S. president, the second chapter focuses on issues and the third on other factors that decided the election. My thesis is thus a study of how the U.S. president was elected in 2008 and of the issues currently most discussed in the American society.
