Design of a Self-sufficient Residential Module for Desert Areas
Novotný, Viktor ; Blaha, Tomáš (referee) ; Křenek, Ladislav (advisor)
A growing number of today's travellers are realizing that deserts, despite their apparent emptiness, have much to offer. Those who want to experience the desert intensely go on multi-day walking pilgrimages in large groups accompanied by guides with camels carrying food, equipment and water. Not everyone is necessarily comfortable with the level of unfreedom that comes with dependence on a group. This thesis offers a solution by designing one of a set of living modules between which a pair of travellers can wander independently. The design of the module is inspired by local buildings. The modules are adapted to desert conditions, easily transportable to the site, providing basic comfort, sufficient water and electricity generation.
Architecture of the extreme
Atcheson, Eva Clara ; Wlazel, Adam (referee) ; Kaftan, Martin (advisor)
Architecture of the Extreme, Desert Shed, is a search for as many aspects of extremity of site-specific design for the Northern-Nevada desert as possible. Physical, geographical and climate extremity, absence of urbanism, scale and architectural context. Psychological and sociological extremity of solitude and abandonedness, but also co-sharing of architecture and ownership of the un-surveillanceable. Extremeness of the economical situation and its development, extreme transformations of the phenomena of second homes and their usage throughout time and into the future. Dialogue between sedentary and nomadic. What does recreational living for a contemporary family in an extreme situation at an extreme location look like and what sort of scenarios must it be prepared for, once the architect is out of the picture?

Areas and facilities for public service facilities, paddocks and animal quarters are each precisely defined and strictly separated geographically and operationally. Are the optimal conditions for the movement of animals between quarters and corral. The proposed solution is very rich in variety of areas, which in addition to the versatility of targeted animals, reflected in the richness of flora and fauna and thus contributing to environmentally high value sites. All spaces is a common need a sufficient level of daylight and direct sunlight. The entire area surrounding the exposure and access roads are designed to completely wheelchair accessible and accessible for persons with reduced mobility. The proposed solution to a sensitive development of existing space is achieved by a better, easier and easier availability. Term solutions proposed pavilions, yards and access roads is based on the themes of African villages. Small scale architectural and mutual spatial composition of individual materials of the new pavilions interconnected units reflects the typical mass breakdown of urban structures in the original locations of breeding species. Pavilions and animal quarters, and appropriately use the added space in the area of ??the zoo and complete the overall character of the place in the context of the current solution to urban zoo.

The Idea of Desert in Modern Arabic Short Stories
Šifaldová, Gabriela ; Ondráš, František (advisor) ; Oliverius, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis examines the theme of desert as literary environment in modern Arabic short story. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the short story's texts dealing with the desert. This topic will be approached in terms of semantic-symbolic analysis, which will be matched by the relationship between nature and the environment as a landscape, and nature as a source of mythological and fantastic ideas, which are reflected in the life of literary figures and story construction. The work includes a search for an answer to the question of what is the diference between the author who has direct access to the desert and the other one who deals with urban or other environments according to the geographic origin. The work is divided into three parts, which then develop symbolic, mythological and anthropological analysis of selected texts. Key words: desert, Ibrahim al-Koni, symbols, mysticism, modern Arabic literature
