The Nature of Motherhood in the Works of Buchi Emecheta

The purpose of this diploma thesis is to analyze the experience of motherhood in the selected works of the female Nigerian author, Buchi Emecheta. The books chosen for the analysis include "Second-Class Citizen" and "The Joys of Motherhood". The theoretical part introduces the writer and gives an insight to the history, culture, and the position of women in Nigeria. This is followed by a discussion of universal topics reflecting the issues of motherhood: the influence of patriarchy on the institution of motherhood, the pressure to be a perfect mother, the preference for boys, and the parent-child relationship. The practical analysis reveals that the chosen topics appear problematic in the motherhood experience of the main protagonists from the selected books. By discussing the mentioned topics, the writer intends to improve the position of women in Nigeria through the strong moral teachings in her works.

Female heroines in the selected Marleen Gorris' films

The master’s thesis focuses on three selected films by a Dutch filmmaker Marleen Gorris (A Question of Silence [De stilte rond Christine M.], Antonia, and Mrs. Dalloway). The text examines the way the film female characters are depicted, their relationship to the patriarchal society they live in and the forms of their possible resistance to a given social order. An ideological analysis used for that purpose enables to explore both values, beliefs or prejudices of a certain content, as well as motivation and power relationships the content is based on.

A Comparison of Approaches to Gender Socialization in the Sluníčko Magazine in 1977 and 2012

The diploma thesis Comparison of methods of gender socialization in the Sluníčko magazine in 1977 and 2012, focuses on the topic of gender in printed magazine for the youngest children. Specifically, it examines and compares the methods for portraying female and male characters in the text and illustrations in the Sluníčko magazine in 1977 and 2012. It analyzes the ways gender is viewed and considers its impact on gender socialization of children. The research consists of a quantitative part, which aims to evaluate the frequency of the representation and of qualitative part, which aims at content analysis and interpretation of the meanings hidden in the text and illustrations. For the analysing texts and illustrations were selected of two areas, family relationships in the private sector and relationships at work in the public sphere. At the theoretical level were used sociology, psychology, feminist theory and gender studies theories. The way-out of this research is the assumption that aesthetic and educational ambitions of Sluníčko magazine combined with aging readership of this magazine is a important element of gender socialization of children and, therefore, the aim is to find out whether the gender socialization is implemented in a gender-sensitive way.

Portrayal of Female Family Members in Selected Works by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the position of women in Nigerian family and to estimate the extent of their emancipation and/or dependence on men in Nigerian society, traditionally considered to be patriarchal. The analysis is based on the interpretation of the novels Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun and the short story collection The Thing around Your Neck, written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a prominent contemporary Nigerian author. The theoretical part focuses on political, social and economic representations of women in pre- colonial Nigeria and in colonial and modern, post-colonial Nigeria. An antidote to the stereotypical depiction of women in African literature, Adichie's work typically presents female characters who are educated, independent and emancipated. This stands to challenge the image of Nigerian women who are dominated and controlled by men.

Transformation of the approach to the gender roles in magazine Vlasta between 1991 and 2010

The thesis deals with the analysis of two years, namely 1991 and 2010, of the magazine Vlasta made with the gender optics. The aim is to compare thematic structure of the magazine in 1991 and 2010 from gender perspective and identify the central issues which are presented to women. The study is divided into three main sections: theoretical, methodological and analytical. The theoretical part describes the current scientific discourse, including terminological definition of basic concepts. The methodology part describes the research methods used and the analytical section presents the research outputs obtained through open and axial coding, which were used in analysis of the media content. Significant editorial issues, which are associated women in a magazine Vlasta with, have been identified and described.

Wives and Whores: Female characters in the plays of Harold Pinter

This BA thesis discusses four female characters from three plays of the British dramatist Harold Pinter, placing them in context of depicting 'The Femine.' Pinter's female characters must not only be seen in the tradition of stereotypical depicting women, but also in context of the patriarchal concepts they have to face - the male dominance, male gaze and male bonding. The second chapter provides background for discussing female characters - reasons why to do so are provided and the idea of woman as 'the Other' is introduced. This concept led to the stereotyping of women and subsequently to their misrepresentation in fiction. The basic dichotomy of 'wife/whore' is investigated. The chapter also examines the specifics of representation on the stage with references to the development of drama. It concludes with placing Pinter within this context. The third chapter contains close reading of three Pinter's plays - The Homecoming, Old Times and Betrayal. The roles of female characters are examined in relationship to the power structures they are trying to dismantle. The chapter argues that even if they manage it, the victory does not challenge the patriarchal structure as such. The fourth chapter is focused on realisation of Pinter on Czech stages. Representations of femininity in Quentin Tarantino's movies

The submitted thesis is titled Representations of Femininity in Quentin Tarantino's Movies and it focuses on the process of femininity construction in six selected movies both written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The aim of this study is to identify how Tarantino operates the notions of conventional femininity and traditional female gender roles. Furthermore, it investigates to what extent his films either support or subvert stereotypical gender identities. In relation to the research issues the key concepts are defined by the theoretical part of this work. In particular it describes the theory of social and media construction of reality, gender as construct, film as a part of patriarchal structure or feminist perspectives related to the film production. This same part also offers basic information about Quentin Tarantino's personality and his film works in general. In order to answer the research questions the thesis employs a qualitative method of critical discourse analysis which functions as a helpful tool while reconstructing the image of femininity set by media. Moreover, the selected method serves to reveal latent meanings applied by film as a form of media to affect both behavioural and cognitive individual characteristics. Gender in compulsory reading - Old greek myths and legends: gender analysis of the writing

This thesis Gender in compulsory reading - Old Greek Myths and Legends: Gender analysis of the writing deals with literary representation of gender issues in mentioned writing, written by Eduard Petiška. The very analysis is based on analysing of gender topics and issues we are interested in and focused on. These topics are compared and showed using examples from particular myths and legend. The question whether these topics are influenced by patriarchal order in the society is the crucial for this thesis. Despite the variability of Petiška's writing, which is necessarily caused by variations of ancient and continuously construated stories; some patterns and systems are there to be found and explored by contemporary gender theories, mostly by feministic literature criticism. In this thesis the method of resisting reading according to Judith Fetterley is used. The deconstruction of the text and its hidden values which are based on male domination and the reconstruction of it in order to show the new perspective at the same moment are the main goals of resisting reading. In my work I map the transformation of gender through media editorial in the journal Vlasta topics in 1991 and 2010 and how tthe communist regime influenced the thematic transformation of magazine in Czechoslovakia. In my work I also examine whether Vlasta magazine in 1991, presents a feminist ideas that have a negative connotation, as Osvaldová mentioned. The work is divided into three basic sections of theoretical, methodological and analytical. The theoretical part describes the current scientific discourse and puts the work in a social media context. This section presents the main concepts such as feminism, gender, gender stereotypes and patriarchy. It also mentions the importance of media and women's magazines for the female audience and the transformation of women's role in society before 1989 and after. In the methodological part, through open and axial coding I examine media content. In my research, I identify and describe significant editorial issues with which woman is associated in Vlasta magazine in 1991 and in 2010. Woman as an opponent: manifestations of sexism in magazine Maxim

The central question of this diploma thesis is, whether sexisms is a commonplace phenomenon of our society, how does this phenomenon appears in our public discourse of present-day society and how can we identify it. The diploma thesis searches the answers for this question mainly in theories of radical feminism, which are part of the second feministic wave, in present theories concerning sexism and patriarchy, in present theories about mens` lifestyle magazines and in an empirical research. Radical feminism` theories specify the manifestations of sexism. The current theories unfold the strategies through which is sexism ventilated. The empirical research then includes an analysis of Czech lifestyle magazine for men Maxim, specifically the analysis of 23 articles selected from one complete volume of this magazine, specifically 2012. The method of coding according to Strauss and Corbin was chosen as the key method. Based on the scope of this method (the selective coding part) the central category was identified and named as Women as an opponent. Its characterization and dimensional scales (in form of variable strategies) were defined as well.
