In my Bachelors thesis titled "Antonín Dvořák´s Rusalka: A Personal Interpretation of the Role of Rusalka" I try to shed light on Dvořák´s opera not only as an aid for those involved in classical music, which is to say sopranos interested in interpreting the role of Rusalka, but also for laymen who wish to learn something new. In the first section, I deal with theoretical findings, about Dvořák, the time the opera was written, and about the composer´s vocal music as such. I then deal with general facts about the myth of Rusalka, the content of the libretto, about Jaroslav Kvapil, without whom the opera wouldn´t have been written, and about the premiere of the work and its stellar cast. Finally, I focus directly on the main character of the opera. I quote all of Rusalka´s text directly and place it in the context of the plot. The core chapter is a comparison of five recordings of the opera interpreted by world renowned singers in the title role. My goal was to clarify this favorite opera and character for the public and broaden the awareness about this Czech work. Last but not least, I wanted to demonstrate the various possibilities one has in interpreting the role of Rusalka.
