Heřmánková, Lucie ; DAVID, Milan (advisor) ; TEMPÍR, Nikola (referee)
This bachelor’s thesis aims to find complex scenographic solution of Don Carlos opera composed by Italian author Giuseppe Verdi. Apart from my own creative solution I also present theoretical chapters of authors biography, relation to his work and I compare several Don Carlos productions by Josef Jelínek who designed six unique costume variations. During process of making the set design I came up with lots of topics to think about. I chose freedom as main topic by studying past productions, libretto and musical part. This topic is one of the key elements of the creative solution and therefore I defined it further in part of this thesis. I am also looking for artistic ways that would be the most suitable and adequate for the opera, musical-dramatic genre, in which music could be more important than libretto. I am trying to find connections to contemporary society and keep the story up to date.

Under these circumstances, it describes the changes of the job description of the individual theatre employees and members of he realisation team. Based on this information, it summarises the specific character of the executive producer's job and names unusual situations which he may get to during the process. General theses are based on examples from praxis, especially from the activities of the Ostrava Centre for New Music.

One of the most important subjects of the thesis is Casanova's stay in the Czech lands and his meeting with the librettist Da Ponte and the composer W. A. Mozart. In addition, I introduce my artistic views on the role itself, my views on the interpretational decisions of the playwright, and my work with the texts and arias.

Karásek, Jan ; KUSNJER, Ivan (advisor) ; DOLEŽAL, Vladimír (referee)

In the chapter the fourth and the fifth, I aim my interest to elaboration of this opera in the Theatre J. K. Tyl in Pilsen and in the National Theatre in Prague. In next chapters, I reworked my personal interview with one of the czech leading opera singer Eva Urbanová, which performed in many productions as main character Kostelnicka. I would like to convey deep experience of Urbanova's understanding of the character and of Janacek at all for the readers of this dissertation. At the end of my dissertation, I summarize Pilsen and Prague production with the conclusion that Prague production is much better not only in directing treatment but also in the music cast.

Coproducing in Opera
Kamenická, Kristýna ; SRSTKA, Jiří (advisor) ; HORČIČKOVÁ, Jana (referee)
The thesis Coproducing in Opera discusses opera productions and opera joint projects that are based on the cooperation between theatres or festivals. While the thesis provides an insight into various issues of contemporary Czech opera scene, it comments on positive impact of the coproduction. For the respective theatres, the coproduction decreases the costs of the production, as well as it broadens the repertory. Yet, the coproduction shows are still quite rare. The thesis describes a process of a creation of such a project in the theatre operated by more than one theatre company; it discusses it's specific management and contractual relationships. The thesis also mentions other types of cooperation, e.g. purchase of the production or lease of the production. The opera coproduction is the future of the Czech opera theatre.
NABUCCO
Song, Gi Hye ; ZÁBRODSKÁ, Dana (advisor) ; DUŠEK, Jan (referee)
My master's degree thesis is about the premiere held at La Scala Theatre in Milan, Italy of Nabucco by Giussepe Verdi. This thesis is made up of two parts: a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part introduces the life of Verdi, the background of the "birth" of the Opera Nabucco, and the historical background of the time. This section will also discuss the history of the Babylon Captivity, which is the background of Nabucco. The history of Korea and Italy when (ruled over) will also be compared. Lastly Va Pensiero sull ali doroate, the very important aria of Nabucco, is examined. This thesis includes research on three different Nabuccos performed in the last two years in many different countries. The first is a collaboration by the Opera House of Royal Covent Garden of Britain and La Scala Theatre of Milano in 2013. This opera is very abstract and modernized, and presented with minimalist staging and costume. The second was held on Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, Belgium in 2013. This was an opera with very modern and fancy staging and costume like a musical compared to the first Nabucco. Also the opera was an adaptation of many problems of the present society. The third was a Nabucco performed in Kennedy Center by the Washington National Opera of Washington, U.S. in 2012. Beside the former two operas, it showed the quintessence of classic opera with an elaborate and magnificent scale of the stage, equipment, and costume. The three different recreations of Nabucco with historical accounts enabled me to work freely and more creatively. In the practical part, the overall concept of the recreation of Nabucco is shown. The concept describes how and when the inspirations come from, moreover the balance to the historical background tried. Compared to other works, the key concept is the contrast between two ethnic groups rather to the contrast between each character in the opera, and the traditional visual features of Jewish people used, as well as Babylon's. The main concept is the combination of historical and contemporary aspects. For example, in the case of Babylon, luxurious and decadent costumes partially inspired by the gold color of the Ishtar Gate used and in the case of Babylonian forces, the symbols that reminds one of Babylon attached to the present uniforms of military forces. Nabucco and his two daughters have significant differences. Abigaille is a woman with charisma and power, whereas Fenena is very thrifty and her mind is pure. Lastly, Zacharias and Ismael appear with typical Jewish costumes. The dramatical characteristics of opera is combined with the harmony of history and contemporary parts over the whole concepts of Nabucco. The costumes show the fundamental parts of people from each ethnic group over artistic factors.
