Diverzita vybraných skupin obratlovců (Vertebrata) v Národním parku Podyjí
Bohuslavová, Markéta
Main goal of this thesis, named "Diversity of selected groups of vertebrates (Vertebrata) in the National Park Podyjí" was to detect and research the existence of animal species in the area of individual biotope. There are 8 groups of biotopes in this area. The goal was to focus on the species that ranked amongst the endangered, highly endangered or critically endangered, according to the Ministry of Environment. There are also many plant communities besides the animal species, which are also part of the reason for its protection. This thesis is concentrating only on the vertebrates groups, which are not as profusely present as the invertebrates groups, but were a lot more thoroughly researched. The thesis is also focusing on anthropogenic activities, that are affecting individual biotopes.
International Trade in Endangered Wildlife (including derivatives)
Bartůňková, Lenka ; Kašpar, Václav (advisor) ; Vošta, Milan (referee)
In the course of the 20th century the un-sustainability of international wildlife trade became apparent. European countries play a major role in wildlife trade. One third of total wildlife imports is destined to the EU which makes EU responsible for the protection of world wildlife and should motivate the EU to be a model in biodiversity protection. Regulation of wildlife trade in the EU is discussed in chapter 1. Trade in wildlife and its derivatives is among the most profitable branches of the international trade. Animals are traded in different forms. Birds are usually traded live (for the pet trade), mammals are traded for their fur, butterflies for their bodies, reptiles for their skins, the highest value is attained by trade in fish. In some categories (live birds, caviar) EU imports more than the rest of the world combined. The EU plays a major role as an importer in other categories as well. The magnitude, value and trends of international wildlife trade are discussed in chapter 2. Profitability of the wildlife trade, strong demand for some products and imperfect implementation of CITES result in the development of illegal trade. Illegal wildlife trade is dominated by organized criminal groups that also deal in drugs and human trafficking. Illegal wildlife trade is linked to severe risks and dangers to both the source country and the recipient. More on illegal wildlife trade in chapter 3. EU imports one third of all legally exported wildlife products. It is also the importer of a majority of illegal wildlife products. Having one of the highest standards of living and seeing that the care of environment cannot be limited by political borders, the author of this thesis concludes that it is logical and imperative that the EU engages in improvement of wildlife protection in less developed countries of the world. The last chapter deals with conservation of Cameroonian Dja Biosphere Reserve and with the attempt of large EU's environmental programs to improve conservation in Cameroon.
The employment of transfered threatened plant species in selected stand types
VOPÁTKOVÁ, Alena
Abstract: This thesis stresses the importance of the environmental protection. It is important to help the environmental protection by being environmentally friendly, take care of the structure and state of the landscape, respect all the protected areas and thus contribute to the protection of endangered plant and animal species, as well as those that might become endangered in the future. This thesis also covers the characteristics of the localities with incidence of the following endangered species: Corydalis (Corydalis intermedia), True Oxtulip (Primula elaior), Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica) and Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis). Additionally, this thesis also covers my own monitoring of the localities with the endangered species of Corydalis (Corydalis intermedia), True Oxlip (Primula elaior) and Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica). Based on literature survey and my own investigation, in the last chapter I propose suitable measures and protection of the monitored plants and localities.
Analysis of the trade of parrots protected by CITES convention between EU and third countries
JURDÁKOVÁ, Jiřina
This thesis deals with international trade in species of parrots covered by CITES convention between European Union and third countries. The trade has been done for 2004-2010, EU annual reports were used as a basic source. Import and export data has been assessed separately. Numbers of traded specimens have been evaluated for both of these two categories. Main countries of import and export, source and purpose of trade were also identified. Subsequently, trends have been statisticaly analysed. It was found, that the trend of import of parrots specimens to EU during that period was declining, although the trend between 2006-2010 was slightly increasing. The trend of export of specimens was increasing.
Trade in endangered species of birds protected by CITES in CR in relation to third countries
JURDÁKOVÁ, Jiřina
Excessive international trade in endangered species of fauna and flora is one of the causes of extinction of certain species in nature. This thesis deals with international trade in endangered species of birds in the Czech Republic as a popular group for breeders. The trade was treated in the range of years 1992-2008, which served for CITES annual reports CR. It was found, that the trend of import of specimens and species to CR during that period was slightly declining, since 2006 is very low. While the trend of export of specimens and species was slightly increasing. The main imported species during the survey period were Poicephalus senegalus, Psittacus erithacus, Amazona amazonica. The main exported species were Platycercus eximus, Psephotus haematonotus, Agapornis personata.
Is trade regulation, defined by the international treaty CITES, the most suitable tool for protecting threatened plants and animals?
Drýk, Martin ; Slavíková, Lenka (advisor) ; Vejchodská, Eliška (referee)
This bachelor's thesis shall attempt to analyze individual approaches to protection of life threatened wild animals and plants. I shall focus on the current international trade regulatory policy, established by CITES, which approves the trade only after the other individual requirements and approvals have been vested. Since the population size of these plants and animals is constantly shrinking, what might be also pointing at the insufficient functionality of this system, if not directly at its detrimental consequences, I shall place the free market model against the current restrictive system. I shall clearly define proprietary rights related to these animals and plants, and also there will be an option for using these threatened species for commercial purposes. My experience with trade regulations and their consequences from other market segments shall me serve as a certain form of inspiration. The purpose of this work is to confirm that the regulated trade may not only be ineffective in saving wild animals and plants but even contributing to their extinction. Conversely enough, the application of the free market mechanism might rectify the current dissatisfying state.
