Typoltová, Johana ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Horák, Slavomír (referee)
Bachelor's thesis is concerned with Iran's position in Russian foreign policy from 2000 to 2011. Iran has been highly debated by international community in last decade, due to his controversial nuclear energy program. Russia supported sanctions imposed on Iran by UN Security Council. However, Russia refused to bolster any other kind of sanctions and maintained commercial and strategic cooperation with Iran. Main purpose of the thesis is to find out if Russia maintains its relations with Iran due to broader Russian interests, which were declared in Russian foreign policy concepts, or if Russian actions towards Iran are simply a response to Iranian behaviour and development in international affairs.
The Impact of International Sanctions on The Economy of Iran
Kraváček, Tomáš ; Baxa, Jaromír (advisor) ; Palanský, Miroslav (referee)
The pursue of Iran's regional ambitions since the very existence of the Islamic republic has commonly collided with the interests of other regional players such as Saudi Arabia and Israel supported by the U.S. Consequently, Iran has been often a target of various U.S. sanctions. Later, after the continuing Iranian reluctance to abide by the international rules concerning its nuclear programme, the EU joined the U.S. in sanctioning Iran. In 2012, the oil embargo was imposed by the former which dramatically reduced the value of Iranian exports. In this thesis, we apply the synthetic control method to estimate the effect of international sanctions on the economy of Iran. We estimate the possible development of Iranian GDP per capita during the 2010-2015 period had it not been for the international sanctions. Our results show a steady growth of the GDP per capita in the absence of the sanctions. In 2015, the last year of the sanctions, the difference between our estimated GDP per capita and the actual one is 1,911 U.S. dollars. Keywords synthetic control method, nuclear programme, GDP per capita, Iran, sanctions, trade, oil
South Korean Nuclear Program and the American Support of the Authoritarian Regime
Stoláriková, Lenka ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
The issue of nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula and the question of legitimacy and support of the nondemocratic leaders are some of the current political challenges. The roots of the Korean nuclear pursuit reach all the way back to the 1970s when the authoritarian South Korean president Park Chung-hee ordered the launch of the so-called Project 890. The United States, Soul's protector and sponsor of many years, had to find a way of how to deal with that situation and to consider their alliance with South Korea. This thesis is mostly an analysis of the American support of the South Korean authoritarian regime at the end of the 1970s. The main aim is to evaluate whether it was possible for the US to reduce its economic and military assistance at the end of Park's rule and to promote the democratization of the country. It tries to explore the factors, which influenced the US decision. Subsequently, it verifies Owen and Poznansky's theory on the existence of two conditions needed for the US to be willing to stop supporting the pro-American authoritarian regime and to allow the democratic elections to take place. This work builds on their theory and adds some other aspects, relevant to this case. It argues that the Korean nuclear pursuit could have been one of the significant factors for the American...

Saïd, Alexane ; Benáček, Vladimír (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
Alexane Said MASTER'S THESIS Iran and the United States' Relations in the Context of the Nuclear Deal Abstract _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ This study analyses the evolution of relations between Iran and the United States by applying the theories of realism, liberalism and the theoretical concept of strategic culture on their contest for power, control and sovereignty. From strategic partners to strategic enemies and back to pragmatic tolerance, both countries have maintained a troublesome relationship which entered a new era of cooperation with the implementation of the Nuclear Deal in January 2016. This deal is a geopolitical breakthrough that should improve the relations between the two countries as it is in both their strategic interests to collaborate. With sanctions removal and by choosing the diplomatic route, Iran can get access to a larger trade and investors' market which could help its economy tremendously and could be seen as an important international actor. Moreover, since the deal allows for the supervision and investigation of Iran's uranium facilities, this allows for greater transparency, profitable for the US and the international community. After the Nuclear Deal implementation, American and Iranian actions on the...

The first part of the thesis constitutes an introduction to the issue of international sanctions, it presents the history of Iranian nuclear programme and also the response of the international community not only in the form of sanctions, but also negotiations. It attempts to analyse the security threat posed by Iran, its defending arguments and probable motives. The second and third part of the thesis deal with the sanction measures imposed on Iran. The author examines the individual UNSC Resolutions and their subsequent implementation, gradually moving towards the assessment of the effectivity of sanction measures with an emphasis on economic and psychological impact and how it affects the nuclear programme. The thesis attempts to analyse the...
