Language Policy in Norway in the 20th Century and in the Beginning of the 21st Century

Diplomová práce pojednává o přístupu k řešení jazykové otázky, která se v Norsku objevila po roce 1814, kdy skončila dánská nadvláda, během níž dánština nahradila v písemném styku norštinu. Bylo nutné stanovit, jakou podobu by měl mít psaný norský jazyk: zda by to měl být riksmål - tj. ponorštěná dánština (později známý jako bokmål), nebo landsmål - tj. nový jazyk, vycházející z norských dialektů (později přejmenovaný na nynorsk). Práce nejprve popisuje, jak vznikl jazykový spor mezi zastánci nynorsk a bokmål v 19. století a jak byl vázán na tehdejší politickou situaci a naopak. Poté je analyzováno, jak byla ve 20. století rozvíjena a přijímána oficiální jazyková politika, kterou po několik desítek let určovala sociálnědemokratická strana. Do ní spadají pravopisné reformy z let 1907, 1917, 1938, 1959, 1981, 2005 a 2012, zákony o užívání jazyka, politika sbližování nynorsk a bokmål s cílem vytvořit společný jazyk samnorsk a vytvoření jazykového orgánu Språkrådet (Jazykové rady). Nakonec práce zkoumá, jak vypadá jazyková situace v Norsku v souvislosti se vztahem bokmål-nynorsk v prvním desetiletí 21. století. Use of Loanwords in contemporary Norwegian and Dutch

The subject of the thesis is to appraise the situation of the extent and the way of use of English loanwords in Norwegian and Dutch. The issue is presented on the background of historical development of borrowing in these languages and also explained in the contemporary tendency of English words usage in non-English speaking countries. To document the official attitude of Norwegian and Dutch media to loanwords we add the results of survey among the particular editors. On the basis of loanwords principles in Norwegian and Dutch, presented in the theoretical part, we assess the English loanwords in particular articles published in Norwegian and Dutch Internet news journals. The attention is aimed to the general analysis of English loanwords in Norwegian and Dutch, to the analysis of the domains noticeably influenced by the loans and to the morphological and orthographical integration of loanwords in the monitored languages. Use of Ingressive Speech Forms in Conversational Norwegian

The subject of this bachelor thesis is ingressive pulmonic speech (IPS) in conversational Norwegian. This applies particularly to verbal forms of agreement (ja, jo, okay etc.) and disagreement (nei etc.). In contrast to previous studies, the goal of this thesis is a complex and quantifiable analysis of IPS. The data consists of 60 items of IPS from a Norwegian talk show called Lindmo. In this talk show the presenter and some of her guests use these forms rather frequently. Each item is classified according to a set of parameters, including phonetic (strength, presence of F0 and intonation) and discourse features (the (macro)theme (character of the conversational topic), the position in the (macro)thematic unit, the signalization of turn-taking, pauses before/after IPS, overlaps, discourse function and the type of an utterance before IPS). All occurrences are evaluated one by one using each of the parameters. The following findings emerged from the analysis: (i) IPS are used in the media by professional speakers (the presenter), in contrast to the expectations of previous studies; (ii) most of IPS (65 %) occurs in the middle of the thematic unit, i.e. in its centre, in contrast to the claim of previous studies that one of the main functions of IPS is the closure of the thematic unit (which is only...

Contrastive analysis of passive voice in Norwegian and Czech

This thesis describes the various uses of the passive voice in Norwegian and Czech. The theoretical part defines the category of voice and describes different ways of expressing the passive voice in both languages. The practical part comprises two largely independent chapters. The first one uses text corpora to explore the ratio between the active and passive voice as well as the frequency of different passive constructions in technical, journalistic and literary styles. The second chapter focuses mainly on methods of translating the passive voice used in Norwegian literature to Czech; however, it also touches the topic of the overall frequency of the passive voice in translation.

Ortographic reforms in norwegian focused on bokmål reform in 2005

In this thesis the author deals with the issue of language reform of Norwegian in the 20th century, especially bokmål form, and the current language situation. It is focused on the reform of 2005, which is thoroughly described. Based on this description the author argues against the effects of reform and makes suggestions for resolving the further progress of Norwegian orthography both in terms of language users and students with Norwegian as a foreign language. The result of this thesis is a description of the linguistic situation in Norway after the reform in 2005.

Cleft Sentences in Norwegian and French

This thesis deals with cleft senteces in Norwegian and French. The analysis is carried out on Norwegian originals and their French translations. This makes it possible to study the cleft sentence in the same context. Cleft sentences in Norwegian were analysed from the functional sentence perspective, syntactic and morfological point of view. It means that I studied the contextual dependece or indepence of the sentence elements and their degree of communicative dynamism, syntactic function of the focused elements and which words represent the focused elements. The language in M. B. Landstad's edition of Norwegian ballads: dialectal and Old Norse features

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the language features in M.B. Landstad's edition of Norwegian medieval ballads that are different from the present-day standard Norwegian, and to determine which of these features correspond to the living Telemark dialect of Landstad's time, and which are vestiges of Old Norse and Old Norwegian. The hypothesis is that the folk poetry that Landstad collected in the Telemark district bears not only features of the local dialect, but also has, due to its bound form (rhythm, rhyme), kept some of the language features from the time of its origin (14th/15th century) up to the time of collection (the middle of 19th century). The thesis concentrates on the analyse of various language features in the field of morphology, sound changes and vocabulary. The analysis and classification of the language features will proceed on the basis of literature about the historical development of Norwegian dialects and by comparison with other texts written in the Telemark dialect and texts written in Old Norse and Old Norwegian.
