The Czech video art (in the context of world videoart)
Zajačiková, Veronika ; Dolanová,, Lenka (referee) ; Šejn, Miloš (referee) ; Ruller, Tomáš (advisor)
The dissertation project Czech Video Art (in the context of world video art) aims to comprehensively map and define the category of video art in the Czech cultural space with a logical anchorage in the world situation. The project consists of two separate, though interconnected, parts. The theoretical research is directed towards a publication that offers a comprehensive survey of the Czech art scene that respects the concept of video art in the international professional discourse associated with analogue technology. From the origins and the first pioneers of the medium of video in the world in the 1960s, through the situation at the break of the 1970s and 1980s in the Czech Republic, to the 1990s, when this epoch is brought to an end by the advent of digital technology. The second part of the work consists of a practical curatorial project of the exhibition. The purpose of the dissertation on the topic of Czech Video Art is to take a professional position on the matter of Czech video art both from the theoretical and historiographical point of view, and to introduce this topic to the wider public in a practical way. Now is a good time for this evaluation, especially because of the appropriate time gap, which allows for sober reflection. Also, the theoretical tools and methods of solution are now available, especially the expert sources of foreign bibliography, which is absent in our country. The motivation was the scientific publication by Pavlína Morganová, which analysed the Czech Action Art.
Glitch in new media art: Technological error as a subject of aesthetic interest
Šašek, Filip ; Souček, Martin (advisor) ; Šlerka, Josef (referee)
This thesis introduces the use of technological failure in visual arts, described as glitch art in the Anglo-American literature, and reveals its specific qualities. The author examines creative exploration of glitch both in image compression formats, and in the user interface of web sites, computer games or operating systems. In addition, the research presents arguments that advocate glitch art in a broader artistic discourse. It does so firstly by analogy, when it compares glitch art manifestations to conceptual and visual qualities of the paradigmatic works of art and artistic movements, and secondly by Dickie's institutional classification, when it analyzes glitch art communities and appreciation by the curatorial, critical and academic public. The central argument of this thesis is that glitch art next to a purely aesthetic experience provides an insight into the heart of technology, which exposes its functionality. Thus it contributes to a deeper understanding of its physical, structural and ideological fundamentals, that have become in everyday life almost invisible due to the logic of immediacy. Given the highly relative nature of the term glitch the thesis does not seek a hard definition of its specifics, but rather asks the cause of this naming (designation) that is why we perceive a...

Live images of VJing
Benická, Alexandra ; Krtilová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Švantner, Martin (referee)
The subject of the thesis Live images of VJing is an aesthetic activity, based on visual projections and on work with new media in real-time, known as VJing, or more generally "live audiovisual performance". As these performances usually complement auditory events or are supplemented by music. The first part follows the origins of VJing out of three angles: First the historical development of projected image, electronic music and the discourse of synaesthesia principle as an principle joining different sensory perceptions into one. Second part of this thesis is introducing an philosophical perspective and it's defining terms, through which can be glimpsed the tendencies in the development of contemporary art of new media, particularly following the example of the German new-media philosophy with terms like homöotechnik, performativity, mediality and gesture. The outcome of this thesis is the finding, that it's not the media-philosophy bringing the textures and shapes to VJing, but the opposite - VJing as an art form is a valuable contribution to defining of the media-philosophy, which seem to be forming along with the new media itself and with the experimental arts exploring it's radical possibilities.

Bioart - Concept and Development
Brixová, Anna ; Kera, Denisa (advisor) ; Šlerka, Josef (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is Bioart, new media art discipline, which is represented by a narrow group of authors. Bioart is often referred to by variety of names and the term itself is not uniformly defined. The work offers a comprehensive definition of the term as an art area that creates space for social reflection of scientific knowledge through its reflection of modern science. The thesis also describes respective artistic, philosophical and historical context of the term. At the same time, the thesis examines aspects of contemporary bioart from the perspective of the artists working in this field of art by interviewing them. The thesis is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter deals with Bioart as a term on theoretical level and introduces the interviewed artists. The second chapter summarizes the historical background of Bioart. The third chapter introduces the overlap of Bioart on ethics, safety and engagement of artists and the public in science.
