Power and Effectiveness of Photojournalism in the Digital Age

This dissertation thesis deals with the emotional power and effectiveness of photojournalism in the digital age. It focuses on journalistic photographs in the context of their emotional impact and examines the effects of the emotional response on media recipients. At the theoretical level, the work characterizes the origin and development of modern photojournalism and how it has established itself within media as a separate discipline; the digital age and its specifics in relation to modern photojournalism; and the emotional power of photojournalism itself and theories of emotion. It also briefly introduces the concept of visual literacy and defines ethical standards in the work of photojournalists. The analytical part of the work names specific features of the emotional power of photojournalism and the relationship between emotionality and journalistic photography. It also deals with the similarities between journalistic photography and reality and how mediation of reality through journalistic images has an effect on media recipients, again with regard to emotional aspects. The Pilsner Urquell's media image during Socialism in Czechoslovakia and the contemporary

The bachelor thesis looks into mediaimage of the Pilsner Urquell brand in the Czech land during various periods of time; namely in the current democratic Czech Republic in the contrast of the socialist era in years 1965-1989. In the first part the thesis explains the socialist era and the functioning of media in the past including the historic overview of the brand Pilsner Urquell. The second part charts the media interest of the brand Pilsner Urquell, which it examines through the brand-related content analysis in selected national and regional newspapers. In the conclusion the mediaimages which have been detected through the analysis are being compared.
Approriatioon and recycling of media images

The bachelor thesis Appropriation and Recycling of Media Images focuses on how media images get outside their original context and how this changes their function and meaning. The work contains of three parts. The first part acquaints the reader with the method of appropriation and recycling, with its beginnings and its specificity. The second part investigates what icons are and how art uses them. We need to introduce basic semiotic terms in order to be able to explain how the meaning changes and how media icons work. In the third part, I focus on particular cases of appropriation and recycling, which are divided into separate subthemes according to their character, i. e. painting, political iconography, models and self-projection into iconic photographs. The fourth part occupies with the relationship between appropriation and copyright. It embraces subchapters on Czech copyright, Creative Commons licences, theories about free culture and particular cases of apropriation and recycling from the point of view of copyright infringement.
