The phenomenon of small political parties in the Czech Republic after 1998

The thesis examines a phenomenon of small political parties in the Czech Republic in the period since 1998 until now. It reveals their position in the Czech party system, their potential to survive in the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic and examines their chances of being a relevant coalition partner. The thesis is divided into 6 parts. An introduction opens the issue of small political parties. In the first chapter there is an identification of small political parties acting in the Czech political system. It focuses on their formation and development, their participation in elections, entering the Chamber of Deputies, prospective coalition cooperation and their current activity without any representation within the Parliament. In the next chapter the theses examines electoral systems and their key variables in regards to small political parties by using a concrete example of the election mechanism used for the Czech Chamber of Deputies. The question of election reform is raised together with revealing the key points of a relevant academic and public discussion. The last chapter examines the relationship among small political parties and media in regards to the key moments of election campaigns for the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament. Diploma thesis Election Strategy of Small Political Parties: Case Study on TOP 09, Public Affairs Party and Party of Civic Rights - Zemanovci before Czech Parliamentary Elections 2010 assesses the election campaign of mentioned political parties, their personal, communication and financial strategy as well as their strategy of inter-parties relations. The author assumes that the small political parties, which all of the examined ones were at the time of this research, lead the campaign in a similar way - avoiding the negative campaign, they are led by a strong and well-known personality who can attract the attention not only of the voters but also of the media, and they have a large number of supporters who sympathize with the particular political entity. The theoretical concept of the text is based on the similarity of political and economic approach of marketing - therefore the author reckons the small political parties as the nichers of the political market. They can be characterized by occupying only a small niche of the political market which is ignored by the bigger political parties for those it is place of peripheral importance. Small parties in the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic: Case study - Věci veřejné

Elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic were a huge success for the new party Věci veřejné. During party's first elections to the Chamber of Deputies, the party was able to reach almost 570,000 voters. The paper analyzes the causes of sudden electoral success of Věci veřejné and offers insights into the gradual transformation from the regional party to the state level party. The emphasis is on party's self-presentation and on the topics that were used in order to reach the voters. The paper shows, how can a new small party succeed in parliamentary elections.
