Magical Thinking Test

This M.A. thesis deals with the topic of magical thinking in the adult population. The theoretical section of the thesis summarizes the existing findings in regard to the theory and research of magical thinking. The empirical section is dedicated to the development and subsequent validation of the new testing method devised to measure inclinations to magical thinking. Proving the method's validity is firstly aimed at gathering convergent proofs based on the relations towards methods measuring similar constructs, the external criterion being the Revised Paranormal Belief Scale (RPBS) and the subscale of Esoteric and Personal Superstitious Thinking of the Contrastive Thinking Inventory (CTI). The second part of the research focuses on the validity proofs gathered in relation to the categorical variable - group affiliation - where we test a selective collection of the general public against a selection of technical and natural scientists and a selection of people attending courses with esoteric content. The research results confirm the method's reliability based on the split-half method and they also confirm a high coefficient of inner consistence of Cronbach's alpha. Talismans - Luck vs Bad luck

The main goal of this work is to approach a problem of talismans. We will concern with the history of talismans and their examples of today. We will mean resources of using talismans. There will be information about magic thinking, because the magic comes from it. We will show the complicacy of this problem. The core of this work is the empiric research, which is based on ethnographic principles. We will adhere to the grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin. The research is related to children with educational problems. We will focus on evocations, which children have about talismans and their experiences with it. Information will get mainly through the interview with children. Research indications will be confronted with literary knowledge, which are in relationship to talismans.
Some aspects of magical thought in children of younger school age

Annotation: The subject of this bachelor thesis is magical thinking in children of younger school age. The concept of magical thinking is defined in the theoretical part from the perspective of developmental psychology and culture anthropology, further the concept of magical thinking by Jean Piaget is introduced. His perspective is crucial for this thesis. The main objective of this research, which is based on my own empirical material, is to discover whether magical thinking is still present in the concepts of children of younger school age. Magical thinking (concepts of children) is used in contrast to realistic thinking (concepts of adults). Attention is given to analogical thinking, too. The data were collected by using methods of participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Findings of this research are compared with Piaget's conclusions. The result of this thesis is a characterization of thinking in first-grade pupils, categorization and definition of used principles of thoughts, description of aspects of magical, realistic and analogical thinking. Rituals as a Rudimentary Product of Magical Thinking

The bachelor thesis focuses on magical thinking in the age of adulthood. The primary aim is to discover and define the particular manifestations of the magical thinking in adulthood and compare them with magical thinking in childhood. A further aim is to find a link between magical thinking and religion, and between magical thinking and field of education of participants. Research methodologies include qualitive field research accompanied by semi- structured interviews. The finding of the research show that magical thinking is more often found in child thinking, but it could be discovered in adulthood as well, there are no differences among principles and forms of magical thinking in childhood and adulthood. Magical thinking is more often found in atheists and there is no link between magical thinking and field of education of participants. The discussion concludes that magical thinking emerges in stressful situations and it is associated with anxiety and feelings of uncertainty. Magical thinking serve important functions - it is a coping strategy and it could reduce an anxiety.
