Usage of spa treatment to cure ankylosing spondylitis from a patient´s point of view
JANEČKOVÁ, Lenka
This work describes Bechterew{\crq}s syndrome (hereinafter referred to as Ankylosing spondylitis), how the syndrome occurs, in what age group it arises most frequently, what gender it is more common for, the causes, influences on the occurrence, symptoms and how it can be treated. Treatment options primarily focus on spa treatment, more specifically on spa facilities in Bechyne and Třebon. The work also includes a hands-on part which should provide responses to two established goals. Goal 1: To track the impact of spa treatment on improving the quality of life of patients with Bechterew{\crq}s syndrome. Goal 2: To evaluate the significance of the work of nurses in educating patient{\crq}s with Bechterew{\crq}s syndrome. Three hypotheses have been established for these goals. Hypothesis 1: After undergoing spa treatment, patients with Bechterew{\crq}s syndrome have improved mobility (measured by applying Thomayer{\crq}s distance). Hypothesis 2: Patients with Bechterew{\crq}s syndrome have reduced pain after undergoing spa treatment. Hypothesis 3: Nurses working in the spa facility educate patients with Bechterew{\crq}s syndrome on maintaining a healthy lifestyle following completion of their spa treatment. To confirm the first hypothesis I used secondary data analysis, where I searched the documentation kept by the physician at the spa facility, for necessary data for evaluation. To confirm the remaining hypothesis I used questionnaires (appendix no. 1 and 2) which I distributed to selected patients and nurses in the spa facility in Bechyne and Třebon. Goal 1 was fulfilled, as with the help of secondary analysis of data and evaluation of questionnaires I managed to map the impact of spa treatment on patients with AS. Goal 2 was also met. I successfully mapped patient education from the part of nurses. Established hypotheses 1 and 2 were confirmed. After evaluating the collected data, the results show that men suffer more commonly from AS, which is also confirmed by statistics of the Bechterew Club. Furthermore, the results show that women approach their illness more responsibly than men, they exercise more frequently and more in general, which also reflects itself in their improved mobility after completing spa treatment. Both men and women claimed they experienced a reduction in pain after undergoing spa treatment. Hypothesis 3 was not confirmed, as nurses in the spa facility informed clients, but mainly after being asked, which cannot be perceived as education.
