Support of Reading in the Municipal Library Branches in Prague

(in English) The thesis deals with a support of reading with aim effort to offered service, organizing cultural and educational actions in the Municipal Library of Prague. The first part solves theoretical definition and the meaning of reading. There are briefly explained some terms that relate to - reading, the reader, reading socialization, reading literacy, etc. Factors that influence reading process and education for reading are monitored, as well. Furthermore, national representative projects supporting reading primarily in libraries are presented at my work, too. The second part of my work is focused on the Municipal Library of Prague and its role in supporting reading. It describes the library from the view of its mission, the way of financing (funding) and organization structure. The essential part pays attention to the presentation of specialized sections and services, which are provided in the library. It describes different actions supporting reading or providing propagation of the library. Last but not least, the different sections of the Municipal Library of Prague are depicted here with attention to organizing cultural and educational actions, which contributes to supporting reading. JOHAN - centre for cultural and social projects

This bachelor thesis's main aim is to familiarize the reader with specifics of function of Pilsen?s non-profit organisation JOHAN - centre for cultural and social projects - on the basis of a case study observing development, history, operation, dramaturgy, finances and activities of this organisation. It shows the ways in which cultural-social centre differs from other cultural centres. It maps important aspects necessary for emergence of such an institution and for securing its operations. It points out the benefits and drawbacks of gradual development and necessary professionalization of the organisation. Last but not least the thesis deals in particular with the unique space former train station of Pilsen's South suburb, called the Moving Station, which emerged as one of the first cultural-industrial spaces in the Czech Republic. The thesis also observes the benefits of JOHAN's membership in cultural networks of Trans Europe Halls and the "Nova sit" network.
The thesis should also serve as an inspiration for dealing with operations, finances and production cases in nascent organisations of similar aims in other localities and cities.

Cultural Education

This thesis has the subtitle Conceptional cooperation between elementary schools and cultural institutions in Prague. It focuses not only on the theatrical field, but also on other types of institutions such as galleries, music ensembles and libraries in order to gain insight into the situation of programs for schools that contribute to the education of the youngest generation of visitors. It aims to map the situation of cultural education in Prague and to put it into the context of the Czech Republic and Europe. Further, the work examines motivation or vice versa barriers of the implementation of educational programs from the point of view of cultural institutions and schools respectively. This is done on the basis of background research, interviews and studies of the constitutional documents.
The first part deals with the nuances of terminology related to the education of children in the field of arts and culture, and summarizes the conceptual documents, which work with the term cultural education.
Work continues with the summary of the way-out of the current state of cultural education. There are described the most common types of programs for schools, the role of the lector in the institution and different possibilities for the implementation of such programs due to operating conditions.
The second part is devoted to a comparison of outcomes from interviews with eight representatives of Prague's cultural institutions and five teachers from elementary schools.
Finally the two examples of good practice from abroad are introduced as well as two examples of projects in Prague and their potential for future development.

Arts Advocacy

Arts advocacy, called a defence of culture and arts, is an unknown area for many people in Czech Republic. Almost no one thinks about it on a theoretical level, so it still remains mainly a foreign domain. Master thesis summarizes and in detail describes this essential area of every culture organization in the theory. It discuss some of the selected methods of arts advocacy and sources of their argumentation: an awareness of own usefulness as an advocacy basis, economical benefits of a culture as an advocacy argumentation source, contact with elected representatives, coalition building and community involvement as a cultural advocate. In addition, thesis also provides several examples of good practice from abroad. Based on the acquired knowledge, the thesis reflects the state of the arts and culture advocacy in our country.
