Romance influence on English Wordstock

Title of the bachelor thesis: Romance Influence on the English Wordstock Key words: History of English, borrowing, loan word, lexicalization, language acquisition, second language, language interference. Abstract The bachelor thesis Romance Influence on the English Wordstock is concerned with the Romance impacts on English, which is most noticeable in its wordstock, and simultaneously it tries to find out what the awareness of learners of English of these influences is. The practical part is based on research in the form of a questionnaire which was distributed among English students of the Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague and which consists of four exercises where various Romance specifics can be found. The research revealed that students do not have a particular cognizance of Romance influence but it showed that the longer the students study English, the fewer problems they have with the words coming from Romance languages. It also studied whether students who know the French or Latin language have an advantage when acquiring the English vocabulary. The result affirms that these people may profit from their knowledge when learning English expressions similar to the French ones but they should already be confident in the language, otherwise the superficial knowledge of it can...
Czech-German (Austrian) language relations

TITLE Czech-German (Austrian) language relations - possibilities for language interference SUMMARY This diploma thesis examines the language interference between the Czech and the German in the field of gastronomy. This phenomenon is reflected in the composition of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. The last area has been selected for a research. I decided to analyze 180 menu cards in the nine states of Austria. In those menu cards I tried to discover 13 in advance chosen words, which have been used in the Central-European language area according to Newerkla. Appearance of those 13 words in menu cards proves mutual language influence between the Czech and the German in each state of Austria. The research, I conducted, shows that the most influenced states are Vienna, Lower and Upper Austria. Probably the main reason for the result is that in these areas the most intensive political and economic cooperation between Czechs and Austrians took place.
Multilingual Compensatory Strategies of Czech Native Speakers in English

The proposed thesis treats the topic of multilingual language acquisition and the occurring language interference. It aims to demonstrate the negative language transfer by the means of the results of a field research. The theoretical part introduces and discusses relevant topics, such as language learning, language processing, bilingualism and multilingualism. Furthermore, it focuses on the character of language transfer itself. In the practical part, two hypotheses are presented, specifically "the interference of the dominant foreign language is considerably higher than the interference of the other language, i.e. L3" and "passive interference reaches a higher degree than the active one". Eventually, the results interpretation is presented and both the hypotheses are verified.
Bilingualism of Russian speaking immigrants in the Czech Republic

(in English): This diploma thesis is focused on the Russian-speaking immigrants living in the Czech Republic, specifically on a group of those originating in Ukraine. It deals mainly with their speech behaviour during speeches in the language of the target country of their emigration, i.e., the Czech language, on the background of sociological, cultural and economic aspects. The thesis is divided into three basic chapters. The first chapter provides a brief description of the Russian-speaking emigration with the emphasis on the Ukrainian emigration. The main waves of the Ukrainian emigration from the end of 19th century to the present are described in this chapter. The target group of the study is the Ukrainian emigration after the fall of the communist regime in 1989 which is mainly concerned about the immigration of Czech compatriots and of labour emigration. Basic research strategies and the methodology of the study are described in the second chapter. Mainly qualitative research methods as well as quantitative methods were used in the thesis and the results of the quantitative method serve primarily to ensure the validity of the study during the linguistic analysis of individual respondents. Analysis of spoken Czech at the Russian speaking Ethnic

The work deals with the analysis of spoken Czech by Russian-speaking foreigners living in the Czech Republic. Based on the transcript of oral manifestations are captured and described grammatical, pronunciation and stylistic errors that occurred in their speech. It is also briefly described the history of emigration by Russian-speaking foreigners in the Czech lands and collected basic statistical and sociological data. Also is introduced problematic of language interference and bilingualism.

Interference v překladech německých rodilých mluvčích do angličtiny

This work aims at examining the interference in German-English translations of German native speakers and discussing the negative and positive transfer on different levels of language. The research is focused on translations of secondary school students and deals with types and frequency of errors they made when translating. Contrastive and error analysis are applied as research methods. The goal of this work is both to identify language levels and items with the highest error rate and to answer the query which kind of interference and why appears in final translations most often. The author takes into account also the aspect of second language learning.
