Hashir, Angelina Duaa ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Numerato, Dino (referee)
The study focuses on the Pakistani Shia Muslim diaspora residing in Oslo. The study will explore how living in a technologically advanced era of the internet, along with having a diaspora identity, influences the cultural and religious practices of the post-migration generation. Furthermore, it will explore how it impacts their association and perception towards their homeland and religion and provides them with a sense of belonging living in a multicultural society. The study employs a qualitative approach, conducted through semi-structured interviews with seven members, four from the post-migration generation and three from the migration generation. Thematic analysis reveals how the internet connected the diaspora community to their religious and cultural roots, i.e., Pakistan. It showcased how their perception of culture and religion has evolved and changed due to exposure to the internet, which has helped them learn more about their culture and religion and made them more culturally aware. The findings highlight the complex interplay between media, religious identity, cultural identity formation, and diaspora experiences among the Pakistani Shia Muslims in Oslo. Furthermore, it explores the variation in religious and cultural identity between the two generations and how technology may play a...

The Role of Violence in Blood Meridian and The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Kubalová, Barbora ; Robbins, David Lee (advisor) ; Procházka, Martin (referee)
Violence has always been conspicuously present in the American nation, its culture and literature. Considering the immoderate abundance of violence in current entertainment industry, it would seem natural for the emotions to be dulled and able to process any abhorrent excess of violence; the reactions that both Blood Meridian and The Road by the American author Cormac McCarthy have gathered are thus all the more surprising. Face to face with the novels' unspeakable evil, many readers do recoil in horror and the pervasive violence of McCarthy's writings has provoked a wide range of critical perception. The novels may differ significantly in the setting − Southwestern United States of the 19th century in Blood Meridian as opposed to post-apocalyptic future of The Road - but the apparent gulf between both groups of characters and mainly between them and the reader is only another ruse of McCarthy's scheme, whereby he unveils uncomfortable truths about humankind. Although his meticulous study of sources might support the inevitability, even a penchant for bloodshed and carnage in specific conditions, it would be erroneous and contrary to McCarthy's portrayal to imply that it is anomalous rather than representative. The hostility in the novels should not be understood as a feature of a particular region or...

Myanmar in EU - ASEAN Relations
Slavíková, Kamila ; Knotková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Zemanová, Štěpánka (referee)
Interregionalism is a globally present phenomenon, yet it has been attracting considerable attention of scholars only since recently. There is no single interpretation of interregionalism and different functions are attributed to it by different theories on international relations. Constructivists highlight its potential to form and influence the collective identities of regions taking part in a particular interregional dialogue. This thesis aspires to answer the question as to whether a constructivist approach is applicable in the case of EU -- ASEAN dialogue on the human rights issue. The human rights issue is here represented by Myanmar.
