Musical time - its deviation from the astronomical time
Oplištilová, Iva ; TICHÝ, Vladimír (advisor) ; Šťastný, Jaroslav (referee)
My dissertation is based differentiating individually experienced, musical time, and shared, astronomical time. I combine the knowledge gained in cognitive science experiments with music-theoretical approach following the path from sound received to the hierarchized representation of the temporal component of music. My focus are those possible mechanisms that allow deviation of musical time from the astronomical one and the factors influencing them. As concerns music theory, I chose the analytical tools provided by the General Theory of Segmentation and the Recontextualization Theory by D. A. Hanninen. The inner sharing of pulse by the listener or performer with the pulse of sounding music I consider to be the decisive moment for/in the deviation of musical time. I link the pulse boundary with prospective and retrospective strategies of the perceiving person. My considerations unfold on an axis between two poles of pulse and gesture, i.e. between full kinaesthetic synchronization with the outer, shared time and the maximum deviation dependent on the individual manner the gesture is internally represented. I convey the hypothesis that the deviation of musical time is possible only with retrospective strategies of processing of musical events. My theoretical considerations and suitability of the chosen analytical tools/means are verified in the second part, in analyses of compositions by G. Grisey, O. Messiaen, P. Kotík, P. Graham and A. Breier. Enclosed are also some theoretical reflections of these composers concertning their work with time.
Consonance and Dissonance in the Context of My and Other Composers' Works
Klusák, Martin ; LOUDOVÁ, Ivana (advisor) ; KURZ, Ivan (referee)
The first three chapters cover historical and contemporary theories of consonance and dissonance that directly influenced my work. This thesis focuses on music-theory and acoustic interpretations of the two terms, but contains also two non-conform points of view on the subject. In the last - fourth - chapter, using own reflections and analyses of own compositions, I describe main relationships of the terms consonance and dissonance with my works.
Algorithmic Methods for Generating Acoustic Music
Dos Santos Agostinho Filho, Gilberto ; MRKVIČKA, Luboš (advisor) ; RATAJ, Michal (referee)
Systematic compositional techniques have been used throughout the history of Western Music, but it was the advent of the personal computer that made algorithmic composition a common reality in the contemporary music scene. The post-war period witnessed the development of several new types of compositional techniques, such as the use of chance, stochastic models and numeric series, all of which heavily influenced the development of computer music. The three main types of computer algorithms used for producing music, i.e. the rule-based, stochastic and artificial intelligent algorithms, are to be analysed. The focus of the present work will be on the algorithmic creation of acoustic musical works, particularly via the automatic generation of musical scores, and the aesthetic consequences of this kind of approach.
THE MEASURABILITY OF CONSONANCE AND DISONANCE ACCORDING TO NATURAL ACCOUSTIC PRINCIPLES
Jelen, Bohuslav ; TICHÝ, Vladimír (advisor) ; HOŘÍNKA, Slavomír (referee)
The thesis subjectively summarizes the author's view of consonance and dissonance. It analyses the acoustic phenomena, especially overtone series and brings a new basis for the perception of consonance and dissonance. The author brings its own theory - experiment based on laboratory conditions, resulting in the quantification of degree of consonance and dissonance. The author allocated a certain coefficient to individual elements.
Work of the selected Theorists of the beginnings of the music Theory in czech Language
Hruška, Viktor ; HAVLÍK, Jaromír (advisor) ; Štědroň, Miloš (referee)
This thesis deals with the problematic of the early history of music theory in czech lands from the foundation of the Charles University until the foundation of the Prague Conservatory (it includes theorists such as Václav Philomathes, Jan Blahoslav, Jan Josquin, Tomáš Baltazar Janovka or Jakub Jan Ryba). The second part is deals with the peculiar music theorist and philosopher Karel Slavoj Amerling.
Introduction to rhythm System of indian classical Music
Reindl, Tomáš ; BARTOŇ, Hanuš (advisor) ; HOŘÍNKA, Slavomír (referee)
This work is focused on explanation of principles, concepts and forms of rhythm system of indian classical music. On this topic there haven´t been written any other autonomous work in czech language before. The work itself is divided into two parts concentrated separatelly on north-indian (hindustani) and south-indian (canatic) system. Both of them are born from same roots but there are remarkable differences too. For both of these traditions there is explanation of different rhytmical forms and their analysis, indian rhythm cycles (tála), their counting systems and its practical usage. For India there is typical way of recitation of rhythms using special sylables (bol). For their comprehension there is necessary to explain basics of indian tabla playing and its traditional repertoir. Autor himself was long term devoted to this musical system which he studied deeply with indian masters. As a tabla player he is playing this music regularly and as composer he is often inspired by these sophisticated rhythm principles .
Factors affecting the Developement of harmonic Field
Zvěřina, Petr ; TICHÝ, Vladimír (advisor) ; KVĚCH, Otomar (referee)
The main focus of the thesis is the determination and discussion of factors affecting the developement of harmonic field. The main factors are the importance and significance of individual tones and chords, their mutual influencing and organization, and their relationship to the time component of the composition. I attempt to find out how can these factors help us to comprehend the harmony of composition. I define the general tectonic scheme, that is related to the theory of harmonic field and I consider it to be its extension. The second part of the work is focusing on traditionally used terms and I´m trying to discuss how the determined factors manifest in them. I pay attention to the terms of the common-practice harmony and also to the modern harmony. I?m exploring the ideas of Miroslav Filip (The Regularities of Developement of Common-Practice Harmony), Karel Janeček (The Foundations of Modern Harmony, Tectonics) and Vladimír Tichý (Harmonic Field). The third part of the work contains three analysis of various pieces of diverse composers (Mozart, Webern, Feldman). I´ve tried to analyse these compositions on the basis of foregoing premises so I could prove the applicableness of my thoughts.
Vizualization of music in animation film
Ishida, Kaoru ; WANEK, Miroslav (advisor) ; MERTA, Vladimír (referee)
Purpose of this work in to find possibilities of vizualization of music, analyze masterpiece of vizual music. There are written about relationships between arts and five senses ? mostly sight and hearing, to make clear how pictures and music work differently, several experiments of visual music on history, animation films as vizual music, composer inspirated by pictures, and writer inspirated by music. Finally there is mention about meaning of expression of art works in different forms.
Intonation and Tuning
Chudý, Karel ; HOŠEK, Jiří (advisor) ; Hošková, Dominika (referee)
The following thesis is divided into two parts. The first one is the mathematical and historical description of common available tuning systems, such as the Pythagorean-system, just intonation, Meantone-system, and other well-tempered tuning. Based on this knowledge there is in the second part theoretical considerations of ensemble and solo intonation and their putting into the practice. This thesis should not to learn to play ?clean?, but rather carry on thinking about the various possibilities in the tuning systems. The work also includes an audio attachment, a complete overview of intonation systems in the table and complete overview of all in European music known interval.
Inequal Temperaments in history and today´s Practisis
Scholleová, Barbora ; TŮMA, Jaroslav (advisor) ; ČERNÝ, Pavel (referee)
This thesis is devoted to the historical temperaments. For their understanding it is necessary to become familiar with the sizes of the natural intervals resulting of the aliquot series. One must be able to determine the frequency rate of any interval and its size in cents. It is outlined why there does not exist ideal tuning and therefore why any tuning is the compromise with different priorities and kinds of utilization. The path to today's widespread equal temperament was long, lots of various temperatures have been used throughout the history. The most important types are listed and described. Currently, in connection with the pursuit of historically informed interpretation historical temperaments are used again. Old music sounds more trustworthy and sometimes, use of historical temperament can help the player to clearer perception of the content of music.
