Changing role of Quebec in French politics
Lemel, Ondřej ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
This thesis deals with transformations of French foreign policy towards Québec and Canada. The first president of the French Fifth Republic, Charles de Gaulle, as well as all his successors together with their administration supported Québec's international ambitions and its desire to be sovereign abroad in the areas that fall within its competence in internal politics according to the Canadian Constitution. This support took place mainly on the platform of Francophonie. In 1995, the presidential candidate at that time, Jacques Chirac, clearly supported sovereingty movement. After the referendum won by the federalists France started to gradually reconcile with the federal government of Canada in various international politics issues such as protection of cultural diversity and multilateralism. France is also worried that in case of Canada's separation, the English speaking rest of the country would get more easily under the influence of the United States of America. France does not intend to admit this scenario. Jacques Chirac during this twelve-year mandate was gradually deepening the cooperation with Ottawa. Nevertheless, Québec remains the privileged partner of France in the fields of culture and education that are key for French foreign policy. Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was even clearly...
The Transformation of an Independent Foreign Policy: The Fench Foreign Policy in the Persian Gulf Wars in the years 1990 - 91 and 2003
Filipová, Hana ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
Diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the de Gaulle's foreign policy, concretely the belief of François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac in a specific position of France in the world. This deep belief of both presidents in a leading role of France within the international scene is evident on the case of the two wars in the Persian Golf in 1990-91 and 2003 and explains very similar behaviour of two otherwise different presidents and very similar development of both conflicts. At the same time this thesis deals with the transformation of an independent foreign policy, which was established and supported, in connection with the belief in privilege position of France in the world, by the founder of the Fifth republic - general Charles de Gaulle. The tendency to conduct an independent French foreign policy shared both François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac. However with coming of geopolitical earthquake in the years 1989-1991, when the bipolar world disappeared and the then international order has changed, suddenly France lost its space for conduct of its independent policy. This new situation was confirmed by the first war in Gulf during which François Mitterrand did not manage to enforce his own independent policy and finally France became a part of anti- iraqian coalition headed by the USA. The...

The Main Pillars of Charles de Gaulle's Foreign Policy and Their Contemporary French Reflection
Staňková, Olga ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to prove or disprove the following hypotheses: firstly, that the Gaullist foreign policy tradition continues to some extent to influence and provide inspiration for the contemporary direction of French foreign policy; and secondly, that it is almost impossible to apply this policy in the post-bipolar world. (I took this to mean the world since the end of the Cold War...) The thesis will analyse the three relationships - with Europe, with the United States and with the Eastern Bloc - which were the main pillars of Charles de Gaulle's foreign policy. The first section of the thesis will focus on the period of de Gaulle's presidency between 1958 and 1969. The second section will use a case study of French policy towards Germany in order to explore the continuity or discontinuity of this policy in the contemporary political scene, with a neo-Gaullist Jacques Chirac taking his lead from Charles de Gaulle. This section will also briefly analyse the approaches of French presidents between the retirement of de Gaulle and the beginning of the Chirac presidency. It then goes on to focus on the presidency of Chirac, which ended in 2007. The main methods of the thesis will be analysis and case study.

Nicolas Sarkozy current policy in the European international relations
Kočvara, Roman ; Nechvátal, Martin (advisor) ; Maslowski, Nicolas (referee)
In my bachelor thesis I try to describe an Nicolas Sarkozy's effort to equal his mighty predecessors as cardinal Richelieu or Napoleon Bonaparte. I use various examples to prove his never-ending wish to return France a status of European Great Power. In his effort he emulates general de Gaulle, which was trying to do the same forty years ago. Sarkozy's admiration to idea of Gaullism accompanies all his measures in the field of European international policy.
Dream of Great France in Transatlantic Perspective
Paggio, Viktor ; Dubský, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Nechvátal, Martin (referee)
This text focuses on the French self-peception in the modern world. French consider their concept of state and citizenship universal, as Americans do. But the two universalisms are built on a different basis in terms of religion, language and many other aspects. I analyze the clash of the two visions of the world and the French reactions to the American rise to power in the 20th century.
