Media, women and the reproduction of symbolic violence

Diploma thesis analyses the reproduction of symbolic violence in selected Czech media. Namely, the newspapers Blesk, MF Dnes, Lidové noviny, Právo, Aha!, Hospodářské noviny and the internet servers blesk.cz, idnes.cz, lidovky.cz, novinky.cz, ahaonline.cz, hn.cz. In the first part, the thesis analyses the key theoretical background, concepts and ideas that support the analytical part of the thesis. The main aim of the thesis is to offer a comprehensive typology of symbolic violence in the Czech media environment. That is, whether, and in what ways, the mass media perpetuate gender inequalities and unequally distribute power in society through language. Given the complexity of the concept of symbolic violence, the thesis uses a combination of content and discursive analysis. The findings present a comprehensive overview of the occurrence of symbolic violence in the selected media.

Helimadoe and Petrolejové lampy: A gender analysis of Jaroslav Havlíček's novels

The master thesis Helimadoe and Petrolejové lampy: A Gender Analysis of Jaroslav Havlíček's Novels examines selected texts and conveys gender-focused interpretations. The analysis of both of Havlíček's novels is carried out within the context of feminist literary theories. The main methodological and theoretical foundations of the thesis are "resisting reading" as introduced by Judith Fetterly and Jonathan Culler's "reading as a woman". Since the thesis is also a qualitative sociological analysis, it uses the processes of discourse analysis as well. The text focuses on the issue of power relations and their gender dimension, on the construction of gender and gender identity of individual female and male characters, on their sexuality, on their gendered activities and on the description and interpretation of the environment that the literary characters inhabit. A special attention is primarily (but not only) paid to main female characters and their revolt against the patriarchal system of the society. In relation to this problem the thesis necessarily deals with the topic of the gender social order and it shows what influence this order has along with other factors on the lives of individual characters. The Brno's dialect "hantec" from the gender perspective

The topic of this thesis is gender analysis of "hantec", a specific dialect spoken in the second largest city in the Czech Republic - Brno. The aim of the work is to search for differences between manifestation and perception of women/female and men/male in "hantec" from the perspective of gender linguistics. On example of local dialect I demonstrate how the general gender discourse prevails. By analysing the vocabulary and literary forms of "hantec" I want to show to what extent this dialect (specific for Brno) reflected the principles of gender inequality. The focus lies on the presence of language sexism and reproduction of gender stereotypes in "hantec". In the thesis I also document the historical development of "hantec" and how were the principles of gender inequality displayed in the different stages of its development.
