Environmental populism in Slovakia
Baroková, Bernadeta ; Vejchodská, Eliška (advisor) ; Plaček, Michal (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to identify the characteristics of environmental populism in Slovakia, which has been promoted by right-wing parties, labelled as populist, and which has been promoted in relation to the issues of nature conservation and the climate crisis in speeches in the National Council of the Slovak Republic on a specific bill amending Act No. 543/2002 Coll. on the Protection of Nature and the Countryside, the so-called reform of national parks. The theoretical part identifies the status and challenges of nature conservation in Slovakia, the attitudes of experts and the general public, as well as the proposed reform of national parks. The theoretical framework of the thesis includes the definition of populism and environmental populism and other phenomena associated with populism. One of the most significant findings of the research is that environmental populist discourse is present in the debate on the reform of national...
Obama Administration's Approach Towards Fracking: Environmental Agenda As a Priority or Secondary Issue?
Povincová, Michaela ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Pondělíček, Jiří (referee)
Hydraulic fracturing represents a significant part of the growing mining and oil industry. The most significant fracking expansion occurred during the period of Barack Obama, whose statements during his candidacy were directed against the oil industry. Based on this, environmental advocates expected Obama to seek to regulate fracking. Under the pressure, Obama was forced to take some steps against fracking, but they could not be so drastic as to create too much complication for the industry. The present work analyzes the steps and regulations adopted by the Obama administration, along with the reactions of supporters and opponents of fracking to the measures. Based on this analysis, the work points out that despite the Obama administration's efforts to introduce regulations to protect the biosphere and communities around fracking, the measures were insufficient and in some cases did not raise any standards for the oil industry. The work also found that due to the significant impact of fracking on the US economy, Barack Obama could not afford to set stricter regulations and in many cases combined the solution of environmental problems with economic solutions or with national security or energy independence. Based on this analysis, it can be concluded that the Obama administration has prioritized US...

Kozáková, Tamara ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Knutelská, Viera (referee)
This diploma thesis entitled "Environmental policy of the European Union and its impact on the environmental policy of the Slovak Republic" targets the environmental policy of these two entities, focusing on a specific area, namely waste management. Despite the fact that environmental policy did not belong to the original agenda of the European Union during its creation, today, due to the gradual development characterized in the first part of the work, the EU is a prominent player in this field. In other parts of the work we describe how Slovakia has gradually undergone a progressive change, ie Europeanization, through its involvement in EU policies. Based on the membership of the Slovak Republic in the European Union since 2004, the Slovak Republic has obligations and commitments, which shows the significant influence of the European Union, and thus the existing environmental policies of the Member States are no longer politically or legally separated from EU environmental policy. In addition to the goal of providing a comprehensive overview of the development of environmental policy of the both European Union and the Slovak Republic since its formation, the main goal is to analyze the implementation of waste management in the form of Framework Directive 2008/98 / EC on waste. This goal is based...
