Economic sanctions have been an important tool of foreign policy not only for world's biggest and powerful states, but also for international organizations. In the past few decades the frequency of use of sanctions has grown considerably. A sanction itself is considered to be a more effective tool than diplomatic negotiations and it doesn't require enormous costs unlike military intervention. This thesis is primarily focused on the impact of economic sanctions on Russia in 2014. Also, this work quantifies the impact of sanctions on the russian economy, as well as on certain sectors. The introduction summarizes different kinds of restrictive measures (arms embargoes, trade and financial sanctions, travel restrictions). In the following chapters based on the analysis of trade relations between the EU and Russia the author tries to determine if the restrictive measures that were used against Russia were appropriate in this particular situation(as a reader, it would be helpful to include what this particular situation is ). Finally, the thesis assesses whether the sanctions against Russia have been effective.
