Religious Life in Czechoslovak Prisons in the Period of the Communist Regime

This thesis deals with Czechoslovak penal system between the years 1948 - 1989 from the view of religion. It investigates the developement of spiritual service in prison, follows its decline after February 1948 and describes in which way the prisoners tried to find a solution to the prohibiton to practice religion in prisons. Further it focuses on religious persecution in communist Czechoslovakia, presents reasons for imprisonment of the members of individual confessions and shows how their faith reflected in everyday life in prison. The author makes a reference to the concentration of priests in closed departements, explains its reason and tries to depict everyday life of these separated communities. He describes in details how the convicted practiced the acts of their religion and he deals with the differences of individual confessions. The work speculates over the sense of imprisonment of hundreds of priests, friars and laymen from some of the Churches in communist Czechoslovakia. It thinks about the power of faith and conviction exposed to cruel physical treatment and mental violence. It also deals with the question of colaboration, relations between members of different confession and between the convicted and warders. The Czechoslovak Hussite religious community in Prague's Vinohrady in years 1920-1950

The submitted thesis deals with the history of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, focusing on a detailed analysis of one of its most significant religious community in the Vinohrady district of Prague, from its beginnings in 1920 up to 1950. It spans the first thirty years of its existence within the wider historical context . As all sorts of momentous, sometimes even breakthrough events, assisted to birth a new church, it was necessary to state these events together with the preconditions of its birth. Therefore the volume of the thesis has been extended and more general information from the time preceding the birth of a new church has been included. One individual chapter has been dedicated to the construction of the church building in Prague, the Vinohrady district as I consider that it deserves our adequate attention.

Jan Kafka: Religious Policy of the Communist Party and the State in North-East Bohemia in years 1948-1960 Zkrácená anotace v anglickém jazyce The presented thesis surveys the development and forms of religious policy of the state in the region of North-East Bohemia. The study analyzes the role of the individual state institutions and security forces, in particular it pays attention to the role of the Church Departments at the National Committees (i.e. the Secretaires of Church Affairs). The thesis also examines the response of individual churches to the state policy and describes the strategies and positions held by church leaders (eg. catholic bishop Mořic Pícha), priests, monks and nuns. We also study the influence of government policy on relations among individual churches.

Spiritual folk song

This thesis is focused on the spiritual folk songs in the Czech environment, especially from a theological point of view. The first chapter puts the topic in historical, geographical and spiritual context and generally attempts to describe what a spiritual folk song is and from which sources and in which contexts it has been created. The second chapter reflects several theological themes or areas that generally apply to the genre of spiritual folk songs. A separate sub-chapter also reflects biblical songs. The lectures are supplemented by specific examples of songs. The third and largest chapter attempts to map out which areas and situations of human life is spiritual folk song concerned. The chapter is subdivided into three time cycles: day, year, life. This chapter contains numerous examples of songs related to the discussed areas. The last chapter aims to interpret and use the songs in the context of today. It examines how the genre of folk songs generally enters into contemporary culture and deals with the possibilities of practical implementation of this genre in the church hymnology practice. However, various outer and inner influences can cause that the meaning of the life starts to disappear, in the worst cases people lose their vision completely. The burnout often affects people who are engaged in other people and their problems. These people are also clergymans, who encounter the other's problems every day. A person is paralysed during contending a burnout in all areas of life: physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual. He is losing the meaning of life and needs a total restart unconditionally. If a cleric is losing the meaning of life his service in church in a serious danger. One of the crucial things for restoring the internal balance is finding the meaning of life again and subsequent organizing the values in the way that allows to live stably and doesn't lead to a burnout again. The Czechoslovak Hussite religious community in Prague's Vinohrady in years 1942 - 1961

The thesis entitled "The Czechoslovak Hussite religious community in Prague's Vinohrady in years 1942-1961" deals with the development of the Vinohrady's religious community within the wider historical development of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. The introductory part of the thesis deals with the historical preconditions of the birth of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. Besides the Enlightenment it was particularly a reformist movement of the Catholic clergy in the 19th century, closely connected to Catholic modernism, which was a revivalist movement within the Roman Catholic Church at the turn of 19th and 20th century. The impact of World War I and the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian empire mustn't be omitted, as well as the influx of democracy, humanism and, finally, the turbulent atmosphere at the time of the establishment of the new independent Czechoslovak Republic. The second part of the thesis is focused on the founding of the Czechoslovak Hussite religious community in the Vinohrady district of Prague, its development from the establishment of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church to its recognition by the Czechoslovak Republic. Military Chaplaincy in the Czechoslovak Army in the years 1918?1939 with special emphasis on the Roman Catholic Church

This dissertation deals with the history of military chaplaincy in the space of the historic Czech lands. It mainly focuses interwar period of the independent Czechoslovak Republic. The first part of this work deals with the history of activities of military clergymen until the time of founding of the First Republic and briefly passes through a period of many centuries. Then it informs about founding of Czechoslovak Army after year 1918. It notes especially the receipt and development of military chaplaincy until the reorganization of the armed forces in the thirties. Also, it informs about the development in a stable chaplaincy and about its general organization, both in peacetime and in time of the state of emergency. The next section informs about the activities of chaplains in different specific environments. The most comprehensive fifth chapter is dedicated to the life stories of individual chaplains. The consequential part shows life and work of the last chief of military chaplains General Jaroslav Janák. These biographies are key resources for understanding the real duty life of catholic military priests. This dissertation is primarily compiled on the bases of archive resources.
