Photography of Modern Performing Arts: LARP

The objective of this bachelor thesis is to create a photo essay on the subject of modern performative art called larp. The word larp itself was formed by combining words live, action, role and playing and it is an alternative to theater and film where the actors play roles only for themselves, not for the audience. The practical part of this thesis documents the preparation, organization and the course of larp events. The theoretical part of the work briefly introduces the genre of photography of performative art, especially theater and film photography. Furthermore, this work compares these genres with the photographed theme and describes their common and different elements. This thesis also briefly deals with the history of larp as a socio-artistic phenomenon of the 21st century.

Horseriding in the Czech photography

The topic of this bachelor thesis is mainly horse riding in Czech photography. The theoretical part focuses on the history of documentary photography and sports photography in the Czech Republic. It maps out the visual coverage of horse riding in the Czech Republic, introduces the most important figures and shows their work and successes. Through the interview with the Czech News Agency photo reporter Roman Vondrouš it describes the shape of current horse- riding photography, the state of sports photography in Czech agencies and examines current topics. The practical part includes a collection of documentary photographs that show the racetrack Chuchle Arena Praha. The pictures look into the equestrian world and are a visual evidence of its evolution. They capture not only the races themselves, but also the whole process of preparation of horse-riders. They were created during trainings away form actual races, race-day preparations and in the moments of win or loss. They show, what is hidden beneath the surface of the equestrian sport and picture the relationship between humans and horses. Moreover, the photos capture functioning of the racetrack in Velká Chuchle that exists for more than a century already and offers different types of horse-racing competitions. Docementary Photography: "Banana Generation"

The main goal of this practical bachelor's thesis was to create a photographic documentary about young Czech Vietnamese people who identify as queer or as a part of the LGBTQ+ community. The final photo book is a portrait of one of the community members. Through a variety of traditional as well as alternative participatory documentary methods, this book examines identity and its formation. The theoretical part reflects on the use of these participatory elements, contextualising the author's own usage in the practical section. The thesis will also present some major representatives of the Czech and global photographic scene, such as Wendy Ewald or Pavel Dias, who have used participative methods in their work. The theoretical part of the thesis also defines documentary photography.

Contemporary Social Photography

This thesis focuses on personal lives of the 'Nový Prostor' Magazine sellers. The practical part of the thesis examines sellers' personal space, private activities, everyday concerns and the sellers' whereabouts. The thesis illuminates their individual stories and aspires to fight against social stereotypes about people who have lost their homes. The theoretical part of the thesis provides a definition of 'social documentary photography' and analyses methodological approaches to 'documentary photography' with special focus on communication with the photographed object.

Docementary photography: Life with Alzheimer disease

This bachelor's thesis focuses on life at the Retirement home with a special regime in Břevnice for clients with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia during one year, which was captured by documentary photography. The institution is located near Havlíčkův Brod. About twenty clients in different stages of dementia and Alzheimer's disease live there. A team of nurses and an activation worker take care of them. The thesis pursues evolution and ethical problems of social photography, in which documentary from institutional environment belongs. It introduces selected authors of world-class and Czech social documentaries. In the following part, this thesis inquires under which conditions can be taking photographs of mentally ill people ethical. Eventually, it explains the usage of photography in relation to mental disorders. It describes the creations of the photographers who suffer from mental illnesses, the usage of photography during diagnostics of patients in mental hospitals, and photography as a method of art therapy. The main, practical part of the thesis is a photo book containing a set of documentary photographs portraying the everyday life of the clients and personnel at the retirement home. Those photographs are accompanied by images captured by one of the seniors from Břevnice.

The main topic of this bachelor thesis is contemporary circus. This type of dramatic art combines elements of the traditional version of circus with performing arts like dance, music or fine arts. The thesis focuses on the Czech version of contemporary circus mainly through photography. The theoretical part analyses the photography of performing arts and how to capture them with a documentary approach. Part of the thesis is an interview with documentary photographer Bohdan Holomíček.

Czech documentary photography focused on environmental issues

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is primarily concerned with environmental photography. The theoretical part frames the presented thesis mainly through the history of Czech documentary photography which is focused on environmental issues, but it also deals with the definition of the genre of documentary photography, moreover it articulates how photography affects the perception of the world around us. The practical part of this thesis represents environmental photography through a set of documentary photographs, which aimed to capture the current state of the Czech countryside. The ensemble acts as a testimony to the daily routine of the locals on a family farm in the village of Krchlebská Lhota in the district of Kutná Hora. Through the photographic collection, the author of this thesis tried to document what was left of the traditional village life. These photographs show regular tasks - cater for animals, feeding and killing of animals, work in the garden, repairs on the holding or work in the workroom. The photographs further document not only relationships between the locals, but also relationships between humans and animals. Overall, the presented thesis might be considered to be a contribution to the realm of environmental photography.

Subcultures in documentary photography: Modern primitivism (practical bachelor theisis)

This practical bachelor's thesis focuses on portraying the subculture of modern primitivism and body modifications in documentary photography. Body modifications can be defined as a part of body art disrupting - mostly irreversibly - the integrity of human skin. The philosophy of modern primitivism is based on the ritual and spiritual conception of body interventions and seeks deeper meanings in them. Therefore, it is closely related to body modifications. Roots of this movement in the Czech Republic go back to Prague, 2004, when a tattoo and piercing studio Hell has been founded. Even now, the studio has a significant impact on the Czech community around body modifications. The thesis aims to determine the genre of documentary and reportage photography. Furthermore, it defines the subculture and provides examples of related Czech documentary and journalistic photography. The main, practical part of the thesis is a photo book containing a set of documentary and reportage photographs presenting the Czech subculture and its selected members.

A view of the current techno scene through photojournalism

The practical part of this dissertation presents the current techno scene in Prague, Czech Republic. Techno as a relatively new genre of electronic dance music has gone through a wave of popularity in Prague over the past few years, but without the influence of established promoters. The photobook covers events organised by three collectives of young people, with a more extensive focus on one of them. They capture the euphoria of the night and subsequent morning fatigue as well as behind the scenes shots. The enclosed photo book shows photographs mainly from parties organised by Cukr. This collective of three young people has been active on Prague's scene for the past few years and its founders regularly run techno events. They change the location for each party, but organising events in places such as churches, theaters, abandoned banks or warehouses carries a risk - and sometimes things don't go according to plan. The theoretical part focuses on the history of techno, its cultural and musical context and the characteristics of nightlife photography through presenting the views of photographers such as Wolfgang Tillmans or Dave Swindells. Documentary photography: Branko's Bridge - One year in a band

The objective of this bachelor thesis is to present an original point of view on the life within a band, mainly through a photo documentary of 55 pictures. It shows the ordinary situations as well as key moments in the band's life from the perspective of its member. The thesis is connecting documentary photography and concert photography through an interview with music journalist Ondřej Bezr, author of the book Fotografie, které hrají. Theoretical part of the thesis gives a bright insight on documentary photography as a genre and further focuses on music photography.
