From orality to writing: discursive markers in WhatsApp conversations

The aim of this paper is to analyse the discourse markers used by the first digital native generation in the WhatsApp chat platform, to demonstrate their deviation from the oral to the written plane and their application in the Spanish as foreign language (ELE) classroom. To this end, a presentation of the key theoretical bases and fundamental linguistic concepts for the understanding of this phenomenon will be carried out; subsequently, a corpus of discourse markers obtained from chat conversations carried out by young people between 20 and 29 years old will be presented, studied, and analysed, and a didactic unit for the use and assimilation of these markers in the ELE classroom will be presented, studied and analysed.
Contrastive analysis of modifier particles in Czech and in Spanish

This thesis deals with the contrastive analysis of modifier particles in Czech and Spanish, with regard to their potential function as focusing adverbs. It's focused on the words and expressions, which are used in texts translated from Czech to Spanish to express the meaning of Czech modifier particles. The work consists of two main parts. In the theoretical part of the thesis, there are presented different types of word classes. These words and expressions are classified into these different word classes according to different Czech and Spanish grammar books. Another part of this thesis deals with the topic of Functional sentence perspective and the focusing particles from the perspective of both Czech and Spanish linguists. The analytical part is focused on the contrastive analysis of texts translated from Czech to Spanish, in which there was used the Czech modifier particle in the original text. This contrastive analysis is base on the data obtained from the parallel corpus InterCorp.
Argumentative Connectors in Czech and Spanish: Comparative Analysis

The aim of this Master's Thesis is the study of frequency of contraargumentative connectors in Spanish, based on the quantitative analysis of these cohesive devices in argumentative texts. The theoretical part follows and draws from the works of renowned Spanish linguists and introduces the reader to the issue of discourse markers. Thus, different proposals for its definition and classification are taken in consideration, then are described the fundamental characteristics of the contraargumentative connectors. These are examined later in the practical part. Divided into chapters it offers focus on the quantitative analysis of the connectors in three corpuses which are comprised of judgments, academic writings and editorials. For greater clarity, analyses are accompanied by graphs and frequency tables. A Czech summary is added at the end of this investigation.
Discourse functions of imperative "look" and "listen" in comparison with their Czech counterparts

The present paper studies the English imperatives look and listen used as discourse markers. The study focuses on two aspects: firstly, to identify the factors indicating the primary function as opposed to the discourse function of look and listen in English, and secondly, to analyse the Czech counterparts of these verbs used as discourse markers. The paper is comprised of two main parts. The first, theoretical background, describes the grammatical form of the English imperative with focus on look and listen, the concept of discourse markers, the cross-linguistic studies focusing specifically on look and listen, the correspondence between English and Czech imperative, and the potential Czech counterparts. The second, empirical part analyses two hundred and three examples of the imperatives look and listen and their Czech counterparts from the parallel translation corpus InterCorp. Filler words and expressions in Portuguese

Filler words and expressions in Portuguese (Abstract) The aim of this study is to describe the morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects of the filler words and expressions (discourse markers) in Portuguese. For that purpose, a corpus of more than 3000 occurences of these expressions was assembled. It is composed of Portuguese and Brazilian mostly spoken texts belonging to different genres. The approach taken in this work is based on textual-interactive grammar, whose vision of the text is based on the social-communicative perspective, i.e. it takes not only the cognitive- informational part of the utterances, but also their interactional part in consideration. This study describes Portuguese as one language. The differences between the Brazilian and the European variety are taken in consideration only when it is necessary to treat them separately. This work can be divided into two parts. History of the filler expressions, different approaches to this issue, processes of grammaticalization and pragmaticalization and prototypical conception of the class of discourse markers (whose brief characterization as well) are discussed in the first part. Attitude discourse markers: a contrastive analysis of selected texts

The aim of this Master´s thesis is the contrastive analysis of discourse markers on a selected type of texts in Spanish and Czech language. The thesis is divided in two parts theoretical and practical part. Firstly, in the theoretical part of the thesis, is introduced the textual linguistic the field which studies discourse markers. For wholeness, are briefly mentioned all of the seven standards of textuality with profound focus on textual coherence. Other part of the thesis aims on terminology of discourse markers (especially on conectores), which is problematic, and various classifications according to Czech and Spanish authors. The last part of the theoretical part is dedicated to attitude markers the main theme of this thesis, their characteristics, functions and examples. The practical part of the thesis is introduced by contrastive analysis of attitude markers carried out on selected sample of texts. Firstly the attitude markers are identified and secondly described and classified. Also is mentioned the absolute and relative frequency and comparison of the contrasts and coincidences in both languages. The thesis is finally summarized in Spanish résumé.
Epistemic Modality in Specialized Spanish and Czech Texts: A Comparative Analysis

The thesis deals with the epistemic modality, its types and modes of expression in specialized Spanish and Czech texts. The aim of this thesis is to perform a comparative analysis which is based on a statistical analysis of linguistic texts. The introduction primarily concentrates on the different typologies of Czech and foreign authors, the classification of modal attitudes, and the lexical and grammatical means of expressing modality. The result of this thesis is the comparison of the frequency that can be observed between the aforementioned languages.
Pragmatic Markers in Spanish, Types and Frequency

The objective of this thesis is to examine which types of pragmatic markers are represented in coloquial Spanish and establish the frequency they occur wiht in native and nonnative speakers. Further, a systematical description of ten most frequent markers in native and nonnative speakers is included and examples of their use based on the transcription are shown. The author bases her work mainly on linguistic studies focused on pragmatic markers and coloquial Spanish ? on the studies of José Portolés Lázaro and María Antonia Martín Zorraquino and Antonio Briz in particular. The author emanates from Lázaro and Zorraquino?s classification, characterists and use of pragmatic markers. The practical part focuses on the differences in use of pragmatic markers between native and nonnative speakers and examines the frequency and representation of particular types of markers in coloquial Spanish.
