Action Research: Development of Reading Literacy at Secondary School

The thesis deals with the development of reading literacy in lower secondary education (according to the international classification ISCED 2). It is divided into a theoretical and a research part. The theoretical part of the thesis defines reading literacy as an important competence for life in society, describes its individual components, its problematic position in the curriculum documents of Czech education and appropriate methods for its development. The research part of the thesis contains a description of the action research. The aim of the research is to improve the reading literacy of selected pupils at secondary school. First, we conducted an observation, a questionnaire survey to identify attitude to reading, and a pretest to determine students' reading literacy levels. Then, we designed intervention methods, implemented them and evaluated them. The research shows that regular and systematic inclusion of RWCT methods and reading workshops leads to the development of reading skills and a attitude to reading, especially it forms an inner need to read, creates reading habits and supports sharing reading experiences with each other. Reading Literacy Development at Secondary Education Students

The thesis concerns the topic of reading literacy at secondary education students with regard to adolescents' own attitudes and value orientations. The thesis describes, in the theoretical part, the origins of speech as the main means of interpersonal communication and presents development of reading literacy in students' ontogenesis with the emphasis on pubescent students. The thesis defines the phenomenon of reader socialisation and its development in time. The work addresses reader competence, its relation to contemporary education system and its significance in the present-day reality and the media society. In the end of the theoretical part, a contemporary level of reading literacy at secondary school students in the Czech Republic is presented. The practical part explores the development of reading literacy at secondary education students during their life with accent on the change in approach to reading when moving to a higher level of the education system and how the students themselves percieve these changes. This bachelor work describes shortly the mental development of preschool kids in the reference to the book, literature and the beginning of reading. The theoretical part is made like a search from professional literature from last couple years. The practical part contains research from the view of parents and teachers in the kindergarten. In the end there are offered solutions and possibilities how to work with a book.
