Problems of phenols in water

This bachelor`s thesis deals with the issue of phenols in the waters. The theoretical part summarises the information about the characteristics of the phenols, its use, appearance in the environment, and its effects on human health. There are described methods of determination these substance in the waters. The last chapter disserts on possible methods of eliminating the phenols from the aqueous environment with special attention paid to the adsorption method. Part of this thesis is also dedicated to the chlorinated phenols which originate from chlorination of the phenolic waters and which cause the sensory interferences of the waters. The experimental part of this thesis is dedicated to removing the phenol from a model water through the adsorption into a powdery active carbon Norit SA SUPER.
Chlorophenols in the environment

Chlorophenols belong to major environmental pollutants and are characterized by their considerable toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation. For their bactericidal and fungicidal properties have multiple uses. They are readily formed during water chlorination process and cause sensoric defects of drinking water. Thus they are posing a serious health hazard. Chlorophenols also occur in nature in minor amounts due to natural activity. The presence of chlorophenols in water samples is determined by various analytical methods. In this work, emphasis is placed on their determination by gas chromatography. The model assay was performed for 2-chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol using derivatization and subsequent extraction with a final analysis by gas chromatography with electron capture detection. The limit of detection for 2-chlorophenol was 2.47 μg/l for 4-chlorophenol 3.14 μg/l. Key words: Chlorophenols, determination chlorophenols, degradation, toxicity
Determination of chlorophenols in water by HPLC

This bachelor's thesis deals with the issue of chlorophenols in waters. The theoretical part summarises the information about their characteristics, toxicity, sources and appearance in the environment. Further, there is described the fate of chlorophenols - bioaccumulation, transformation and ways of degradation in the environment. The emphasis is placed on methods for determination of these compounds in water samples, especially by the HPLC method with previous concentration by solid-phase extraction. The experimental part deals with separation of certain isomers by high performance liquid chromatography in reverse mode. In this bachelor's thesis, limits of detection of these isomers under optimized conditions of analysis were determined. Found conditions were applied to the analysis of a water sample taken in Ústí nad Labem.

Highly sensitive analysis of chlorophenols and sulfonamides in waters by electrophoretic focusion on inverse electromigration dispersion gradient with ESI-MS detection

This work presents a new methodology for high-sensitivity analyses by capillary\nelectrophoresis (CE) with electrospray-ionization mass spectrometric (ESI-MS)\ndetection, based on electrophoretic focusing on an inverse electromigration dispersion\n(EMD) gradient. The technique is based on a robust electrolyte system providing a\ngradient of required properties, suitable for routine analyses of trace amounts of weak\nacids with pKa values between approx. 6.5 and 9. Examples analyses of several\nchlorophenols and sulfonamides are presented, with LODs around 3x10-9 M for spiked\ndrinking water without any sample pretreatment.

Determination of chlorophenols in environmental samples using electromembrane extraction and capillary electrophoresis

Combination of electromembrane extraction (EME) with capillary electrophoresis (CE) was used for determination of trace level chlorophenols (CPs) in environmental water samples. The analytes were transported across supported liquid membrane (SLM), composed of 1-ethyl-2-nitrobenzene (ENB), by the application of electrical field. A driving force of 150 V was applied to extract the analytes from neutral sample (donor solution) into strongly alkaline acceptor solutions. The acceptor solutions were subsequently analyzed by CE with UV-Vis detector.
Comparison of Pentachlorophenol Experimental Dechloration with Thermodynamical Calculations by Municipal Incineration Waste Fly Ash

The aim of this study is the comparison of dechlorination experiments of chlorinated phenols by the fly ash from municipal waste incinerators with thermodynamical calculations. Discussed are: isomer stability of chlorinated phenols for the given level of chlorination, isomerization, chlorination and sythetic reactions in the course of dechlorination reactions and the proposed principle ruling the dechlorination process.
