Influence of urbanization patterns on the escape behaviour of birds

Urbanization, i.e., the anthropogenic transformation of natural habitats into urban areas, has significant impact on the biodiversity. One of the key factors for successful animal survival in urban environments is the increase in their tolerance towards humans manifested by their decreased shyness. One of the field methods for assessing the level of the shyness across different individuals, populations, and species of animals is measuring their flight initiation distance. In this thesis, I focus primarily on birds, as their responses have been most extensively studied. Previous studies focused on differences in escape behaviour among birds mainly between urban and rural areas, and focused mainly on Europe and North America. However, human settlements vary in their history, size, population density, and other characteristics. Therefore, the observed patterns in bird behaviour may not always be universally applicable across all cities. In this thesis, through a literature review, I summarize how the escape behaviour of birds differs not only between urban and rural environments but also depending on the characteristics of human settlements, such as their size, history, degree of urbanization, the density of the local human population and the ecoregion. Avian communities of overgrown wetlands near fishponds in the Třeboň basin

Wetlands are one of the most unique and threatened biotopes on earth. Encroachment, mainly due to the cessation of traditional management leads to the appearance and spread of shrubs (mostly willows, Salix spp.). ey eventually change the appearance of the wetlands into forest- like habitats. is diploma thesis describes avian communities of overgrown wetlands and compares them with those of non-overgrown wetlands, i.e., reedbeds and low vegetation (mainly sedges, Carex spp.). Although the overgrown wetlands did not have the lowest species and population densities, in comparison with non-overgrown wetlands, the densities of wetland specialists and endangered species, such as Savi's Warbler (Locustella luscinioides), Bluethroat (Luscinia sve- cica), and Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) were lowest in the willow-dominated wetland compared to non-overgrown. Due to the overgrowth of the wetland, the avian communities are more wo- odland and common bird species, such as Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita), Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus), and Great Tit (Parus major). We also wanted to investigate and compare the invertebrate biomass in overgrown and non-overgrown wetlands. Social learning in birds: mechanisms and importance in different contexts

Social learning, i.e. learning from other individuals of the same or different species can be found in a large number of taxa and the birds are no exception. Authors of a large number of studies focusing on this topic demonstrated the influence of social learning on various aspects of birds' life. Undoubtedly, the most important aspects of birds' life are recognition of predators, mate choice, and acquisition of food and food choice. Tool-related behaviour such as tool making and tool using in order to obtain food is also related to the foraging context. However, social learning often plays a different role in different contexts in different species. The differences in acquisition and use of social learning in some contexts exist even within a single species. These differences are mainly caused by individual personality, sex, age and partly also by social status and different ontogenetic factors influencing individual development. Social learning is a very broad topic with large number of variables and, despite the intensive research, it is still not fully understood. Proposal for a redesign of the exoterium of ZOO Brno

This bachelor´s thesis focuses on the redesign of Exoteria in the Brno Zoo, where the current structure is outdated and aesthetically unpleasing, barely meeting the needs of birds and lacking the necessary attractiveness for a facility of this kind. The goal of the thesis is to propose an innovative and functional solution in the form of four functional units: a bird pavilion, an aquarium pavilion, facilities for staff, and a refreshment facility. The architectural design combines an ecological approach with the concept of open architecture, aiming to connect visitors with nature and animals. It offers an open space in the outdoor aviary of the bird pavilion and features a green element with a vegetative façade for the refreshment facility. The aquarium pavilion is envisioned as a multifunctional center for meetings and education, allowing for lectures, film screenings, and other cultural events that connect visitors with the underwater world. The thesis delves into the details of the aquarium pavilion and the refreshment facility. The proposal involves the removal of overgrown vegetation and trees, with a priority on minimizing impacts on the natural environment. Simultaneously, the thesis suggests replanting new trees to preserve ecological balance. The work is based on the architectural design studio in the fourth year, with a focus on interior design.

New exotarium at ZOO Brno

The subject of the bachelor thesis is the preparation of project documentation for construction permits and part of the documentation for the implementation of the construction on the basis of the assignment, which was provided in the course BGA036 - Architectural Design Studio 5 in the summer semester Year 3 on the topic of interior design, which was later extended to public buildings. The topic of the study is the design of a new exotarium at the Brno Zoo. The plot of land in question is located on the territory of the Brno Zoo in the South Moravian Region. The concept of the architectural design was to create modern and hygienic spaces for a dignified life of animals in captivity and at the same time to allow visitors to have a glimpse into animal life and behaviour. It is a two-storey, partly basemented building with an open interior space that is divided into two main sections - aquatic life and air life. The basic idea of the project is to provide enough space for animal life in the pavilion, and therefore a large dome-shaped aviary is created for the birds, extending over the entire roof of the building. For fish, large aquariums are created. There is also a lecture room, staff facilities and thermal engineering facilities in the building. All functions of the building have their necessary facilities.

Circumstances of finding and comparison of health care for different bird and mammal taxa at a rescue station

This thesis is focused on the Wildlife Rescue Station Makov (county Písek). The thesis presents an overview to the rescue station activities during the observation period 2016-2022. The practical part is dedicated to the analyses concerning the birds and mammals admitted to the rescue station. The analyses stand out from the individual reasons for admission, the success of treatment, the time of care for each order and the impact of whether the animals thrive more when they are singly or in a group. The thesis also introduces the National Rescue Network, its activities, history and funding, and the environmental education of the stations. The thesis is enriched by some of the reasons for intake, which include injuries caused e.g. by power lines, traffic or in any way disadvantaged animal (e.g. injury).

ZOO Park Dvůr Králové - Generel

The proposal project is designing the development plan of the ZOO in Dvur Kralove nad Labem, as has designed a new exhibition of new lions, hyenas, birds of prey, the African desert and the object of refreshments for visitors. Architectural study addresses the design of objects - pavilions exposure for lions, hyenas, a pavilion with an aviary for birds of prey - bird world, the African pavilion terrarium desert and finally building with a cafe and toilets for the visitors of the ZOO. The proposed approach also runs the individual pavilions, then runs for the lions and hyenas and near runs in the African desert ungulates and seasonal runs. The proposed solution recognizes the zoo premises as a place for keeping large animal species composition, education of visitors, as the meeting place of rest and relaxation. The solution takes into account the complex relationships and interactions between exposures in a given area, not only in terms of architectural and aesthetic approach to the complex, but also in terms of operating and zoological.The zoo is a park with specific exposure to live with a balanced human rights - a visitor to one side and kept the animal on the other. The proposed solution to the Zoo is sensitive to the surrounding landscape, the existing urban and architectural design and space requirements for any award. From an operational point of view, the proposal accepted by all the requirements of the future. Areas and facilities for public service facilities, paddocks and animal quarters are each precisely defined and strictly separated geographically and operationally. Are the optimal conditions for the movement of animals between quarters and corral. The proposed solution is very rich in variety of areas, which in addition to the versatility of targeted animals, reflected in the richness of flora and fauna and thus contributing to environmentally high value sites. All spaces is a common need a sufficient level of daylight and direct sunlight. The entire area surrounding the exposure and access roads are designed to completely wheelchair accessible and accessible for persons with reduced mobility. The proposed solution to a sensitive development of existing space is achieved by a better, easier and easier availability. Term solutions proposed pavilions, yards and access roads is based on the themes of African villages. Small scale architectural and mutual spatial composition of individual materials of the new pavilions interconnected units reflects the typical mass breakdown of urban structures in the original locations of breeding species. Pavilions and animal quarters, and appropriately use the added space in the area of ??the zoo and complete the overall character of the place in the context of the current solution to urban zoo.
