The theme of popular music in regional newspapers of contemporary Karlovy Vary region in the period 1957-1967

The dissertation Topic of popular music in the local press of contemporary Karlovy Vary region in the period 1957 - 1967 attempts to capture the process of official views presented in the regional press between the years 1957 - 1967 in the territory of today's Karlovy Vary Region on various genres of modern music, represented by mainstream dance music which later evolved into popular music. Articles, reviews and critiques relevant to modern music published in newspapers in area of Karlovy Vary and specialist publications dedicated to particular cultural issues in the region was used for the research. Furthermore, it was primarily jazz and rock music in Czechoslovakia known as big beat (bigbít). The introduction deals with the theoretical and methodological issues appropriate to the topic and their possible use. The next part deals with the social and cultural context in Czechoslovakia at that time, the influence of ideology on culture and simultaneously on releasing in art and society during the 1960s. The Import and Distribution of Gramophone Records under the Normalization in Socialist Czechoslovakia

This work engages in the import and distribution of the audio storages, concretely the gramophone records to Czechoslovakia. A gramophone record - differently to other audio storages like reel-to-reel tape records or later the cassettes - was meanwhile also an artefact that personified an attractive exoticness of the western world and because of its format and graphical elaboration it represented a valuable object of popular culture. The work is based on the assumption that the development of Czechoslovak musical subcultures depended largely on the distribution of gramophone records. That is why author focuses his attention on the unofficial import of the LP records by private persons. The very limited state-controlled import of this product will be also partly taken in account. An important question within this work is the import of the west-made music from other socialist states. In many of those countries licenses of those LPs were released much more often than in CSSR. Compared to the original western LPs it was easier for Czechoslovakian citizens to reach them - because of better possibilities to travel to socialist countries and yet because of a relatively low prices of eastern presses. Public appearances of unofficial rock bands in Prague between 1973-1984

This thesis deals with the issue of public appearances of amateur rock bands in Prague after the introduction of the so-called "requlifications" which basically destroyed professional rock music in Czechoslovakia. This affected especially the capital city which had witnessed an unprecedented rise of this genre only several years earlier. Thereafter, independent rock music could be practiced only as a hobby, and even the amateur musicians had to face extensive regulations and general mistrust. As a result, opportunities to appear in public were very sparse because organizers were worried about the consequences of such events. The research investigates the mechanisms and conditions for durable opportunities to play publicly in Prague before 1984. The effects of the article Nová vlna se starým obsahem - the pinnacle of the media and social campaign against new forms of rock music, were already becoming apparent in that year and the Union of musicians and its sections - main pillars of independent culture in Czechoslovakia - were dissolved. The conclusion is that in such difficult circumstances persistence, creativity and readiness to lose one's job proved crucial qualities. Music in Czech Movies Made by Milos Forman

The thesis deals with a musical aspect in Czech films directed by Miloš Forman. The topic is investigated within a wider context of musical culture of the 1960s as it is focused on analysis of cultural phenomena associated with musical expression which left their impression on Forman's films and participated, to great extent, in specificity of their soundtracks. So the films are not analyzed as separate artifacts, but they are considered as documents affected by the social climate at that time. Common social phenomena which were an integral part of Forman's films are studied such as dancing parties, twist and radio broadcasting. The Forman's cooperation with the Semafor theatre is analyzed as well as how Semafor poetics influenced his films. Jiří Suchý's lyrics and the period hits classified as the medium pop music stream are carefully analyzed as they are an important part of Forman's films. A short outline of the cinematographic context of the 1960s and comparison with films thematically similar help to specify Forman's approach to the music aspect. The collage-like structure of the work highlights a few contradictory trends in pop music of the 1960s whose variety can be seen in Forman's films.
The History and Presence of Radio Beat

This thesis deals with the historical development of the first Classic rock radio station in the Czech Republic - Radio Beat. The station began broadcasting on 1st January 2002 and within the first few years of its existence it proved that even in the Czech media landscape it is possible (despite its narrow profile) to build a strong rock radio station. In a few years' time, the original Prague station has spread through the whole of the Czech Republic and today it is possible to tune in to it on more than fifty frequencies in all regions. One of the specialities of the station is (amongst others) that it offers topical music journalistic programmes every evening. The thesis is the first comprehensive portrait of the station. Apart from the development of the programming of the station the thesis concentrates on the staff structure of Beat, its PR and background and especially the station's communication with its target audience. Part of this work is also dedicated to a brief description of the present state of Beat (that is, in year 2016) in terms of programming, radio presenting and staff structure. The work deals with the mapping of underground cultural phenomenon in the Czechoslovak normalization environment. Especially arising subculture within the band The Plastic People of the Universe. Described is a brief history of the band, its sources of inspiration, lyrics and music. The next section focuses on the persecution of the regime and the subsequent wave of solidarity from the Czech intellectuals and dissidents, which substantially contributed to the formation of Charter 77.
