The use of authentic materials in English language lessons in Czech lower secondary school

The diploma thesis deals with authentic materials and the use of authentic materials in English language teaching. It is divided into two main parts. The theoretical part focuses on the definitions of authentic materials and authenticity in the context of language classroom. Different views on the subject matter are compared and summarized. The link between the real- world impact and the use of authentic materials and its influence on the motivation of the pupils is briefly discussed as well. Followingly, the thesis contains a classification of the authentic materials and advantages and potential shortcomings of their use. Each material type includes a number of activities usable in English lessons. The research for the practical part was conducted at an elementary school. The practical part thus consists of two main sections, specifically designing, piloting and observing lessons where different kinds of authentic materials were employed as well as a questionnaire filled by pupils. The questionnaire inquires the learners firstly about the lessons they attended. Furthermore, it also focuses on attitudes of the pupils towards the use of authentic materials in English lessons in general, their use in pupils' free time and their preferred authentic English material kinds. Teaching Suprasegmental Pronunciation Features in English through Authentic Documents

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to enrich the existing ways of teaching suprasegmental pronunciation features in English pronunciation in secondary schools with a focus on the possibilities of using authentic materials. In the introductory section, we will introduce the nature of the suprasegmental pronunciation features, which we investigate in this thesis. Then, we will summarize basic didactic principles of teaching second language pronunciation, focusing primarily on the pronunciation of suprasegmental pronunciation features. Next, we will map the existing ways of presenting and practising suprasegmental phenomena, based on the analysis of exercises in selected English language textbooks for secondary schools aimed at practising suprasegmental phenomena. We will define terminologically the notion of authentic material and specify the types of authentic materials that can be used to teach second language pronunciation. Subsequently, we will propose a set of activities based on selected authentic materials to enrich existing types of exercises aimed at pronunciation training.
Teaching English with Authentic Materials in a Primary School

This diploma work is primarily oriented at application of the authentic materials when using the LT strategy of authentic learning in teaching English to the pupils at Czech primary schools. In the theoretical part of this work there were at first analyzed curricular documents of the Czech Ministry of Education concerning the changes in the sphere of educational policy regarding Language and Language Communication. After that, there were described various ways of application of didactic principles of adequity, systematic approach, illustrativeness, willful learning, activity, individual approach, compactness of learning process and cyclical arrangement of the newly learned information. Next, there were defined the term of authentic learning and the difference between the didactic and authentic materials. There were also compared various views on the use of innovative authentic learning strategy in ELT and mentioned various possibilities of presenting sociocultural context of English speaking countries in language teaching. Multimedia applications in French language teaching

TITLE: Multimedia applications in French language teaching SUMMARY: This thesis describes the possibilities of using tablets as educational devices within learning French as a foreign language. The work has a theoretical part and a practical part. In the theoretical part the role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the educational process is defined. Tablet is characterized and classified in the system of didactic tools. Studies that have dealt with the teaching and learning via tablets are presented and programmes that enable equipping schools with these devices are mentioned. The way of teaching is transforming due to the upcoming educational technology and also the teacher's role in the process of education is changing. The practical part provides a critical review of the applications available in the App Store, which can be used for the development of different language skills in French class and beyond. Furthermore the thesis offers methodological instructions as a teacher's support. Through these materials, lessons containing work with authentic French applications could be introduced in class.
