Sculpture from 1966-1989 in the Public Space of Prague. Contemporary Reception and Methods of Treatment
Krausová, Sára ; Bendová, Eva (advisor) ; Czumalo, Vladimír (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of sculpture from 1966-1989 in Prague's public space. Through specific examples of works, the most significant paradigms of deterioration of art in public space are presented, which depend on contemporary reception and treatment. The period in question is defined by the validity of the decree on the application of artistic design in investment construction. The government resolution defined the principles for securing funding of one to four percent for the artistic design of buildings, public spaces and urban concepts. Thanks to state support for art, a large number of realisations were created in Czechoslovakia, which were often left to decay and destruction after the fall of the regime. The introductory chapter describes the cultural and historical circumstances of the creation of these works of art in public spaces in Prague. The main part of the thesis deals with a detailed analysis of specific sculptural realizations with emphasis on their current condition. These works are categorized subsequently: removal, replacement, absent care and preservation of the work of art. Particular attention is paid to civic and institutional support for the arts in the public space and efforts to reintroduce a percentage for the arts. Keywords art in public space,...
Autonomy of an artwork outside of the institutions of art
Hauser, Filip ; Piaček,, Martin (referee) ; Dub,, Petr (referee) ; Klímová, Barbora (advisor)
This dissertation thesis aims to reflect on the current evolvement of public spaces and increasingly common discussions of the lay and professional public about its impact and importance for a democratic society. The main topic, "Autonomy of an artwork outside of the institutions of art", focuses on searching for the autonomy of artwork in public spaces in the context of how the artwork was placed there. The thesis describes specific artworks which were placed into the public space using different methods, such as art competition, no competition, as a gift, or in a way of temporary art. These methods are examined to find the degree of autonomy. The degree of autonomy of artworks in public spaces is determined based on the applied analysis which, among other things, focuses on how efficient the result is in comparison to the method of placement. The field research resulted in complex, subjective, sculptural and artistic opinion on the current practice of placement of artworks into public spaces. Such professional and relevant opinion was then presented to the responsible authorities which have a significant impact on the creation of public spaces. The author aims to apply the acquired knowledge in practice by offering his professional opinions for the new elaboration of the government strategic document called "Politika architektury a stavební kultury České republiky" (loosely translated as "Politics of Architecture and Building Culture of the Czech Republic"), which is created by Ministry of Regional Development of the Czech Republic. The main results of the thesis describe the efficient approaches which lead to cultivation of public spaces and the significant role of art in them. Such approaches were in the thesis demonstrated by civic influence on the government strategies or civic activism in a form of citizens' initiative called "Je to i tvoje město" (loosely translated as "The city is your too") which actively participates in the public debate in Jindřichův Hradec, town on the South of the Czech Republic.
The problematics of art in public space during the period of normalization on the example of the Prague metro
Němcová, Alice ; Pech, Milan (advisor) ; Czumalo, Vladimír (referee) ; Rathouská Štroblová, Kateřina (referee)
The problematics of art in public space during the period of normalization on the example of the Prague metro This thesis deals with the problematics of art in public space during the period of normalization on the example of the Prague metro. The premises of metro required formal restrictions on the artworks that were intended to embellish it. For security reasons the artworks were not allowed to be on the platforms, nor in the central access tunnel, and could appear only in the vestibules and public passages or on street level at the exits from stations. On the one hand Prague metro had a clearly political component, emphasizing the friendly relationships with the Soviet Union and the key importance of the involvement of Soviet experts for the existence of modern transport systems in Prague. On the other hand, the same project made it possible to involve artists whose independent work was rejected by the regime. At the beginning of the text, I summarize the history of the Prague metro and the phenomenon of underground transport as such, followed by a section devoted to the influence of the Moscow metro on the Prague environment. The main portion of the thesis is dedicated to the art general, circumstances of the origin of artworks, assessment, financing, and realization of works of art in the...

Restoration of sgraffito on a cement base

Restoration of concrete sculpture
Červinka, Josef ; Říhová, Vladislava
Much attention is paid in contemporary domestic and foreign research to the rehabilitation of concrete, but it is mostly focused on architectural works and their surfaces. Concentrated research into conservation and restoration strategies of smaller sculptural works is unique. The aim of the presented historic preservation procedure was to verify on a reference project (Alois Šutera’s sculpture Hudebník (Musician) from 1965 in Přerov cemetery) a method of the repair of a concrete sculpture that would fulfil as much as possible the conditions for the rehabilitation of concrete structures and was carried out in accordance with the restoration of sculptures of inorganic materials under preservation care. An innovative surface treatment technique has been used during the restoration of the sculpture, which might lead in the future to efficient protection without considerable aesthetic changes and obliteration of traces proving the existence of the work in time. The aim of the technique based on mineral coating is to fill small cracks and larger pores in the surface of the sculpture without erasing the surface structure that enables the readability of earlier, possibly partially authorial additions.

Methodology of archival survey of works of art from the second half of the twentieth century in public space
Říhová, Vladislava ; Křenková, Zuzana
The aim of the methodology is to acquaint the professional public with the possibilities of archival research of works of art from the second half of the twentieth century situated in architecture and in the public space. Its origin is related to the ever more pressing problems of the preservation of these artistic implementations. The spectrum of usable written and pictorial sources ranges from private archives and estates of artists or architects to variously thorough documentation in regional museums and galleries and to funds in which the official approval procedures for the works are recorded; these took place on the level of state authorities (national committee) and within the agenda of professional organizations. The text provides basic orientation in archival funds. It focuses above all on more systematic possibilities of research in the archival materials of the Czech Visual Arts Fund’s company Dílo. With this originator, which centrally administered orders for artwork commissions in the socialist state from 1954, it is possible to study the works not in isolation but in a wider context of their origin, within the framework of the individual regions, etc. The methodology includes segmentation of regional funds of this kind and presents characteristic types of archival materials that can be used in the research.
