Changes in the voting law in the state of Texas and their impact on the electorate
Rambousková, Markéta ; Dopieralla, Jakub (advisor) ; Drašar, Michael (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of changes in the electoral system of state Texas and their potential impact on its' electorate. This thesis describes the historical context of the voting law, as well as the current situation regarding this matter. It also presents the most important statutory changes that exist on the federal level of the voting law and also the demographics of the state of Texas to better illustrate the social context. In particular, greater attention is given to two specific aspects of the voting law, namely Absentee Ballot and voter identification laws, the so-called Voter ID Laws. These aspects of voting rights have begun to re-emerge at the forefront of the voting rights debate as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated 2020 U.S. presidential election. Both of these phenomena are described in terms of their current regulation in the state of Texas and their potential impact on the electorate. The thesis concludes that both of these aspects of suffrage exist in Texas in a fairly strict form. In doing so, according to the researches mentioned, the absence of such statutory regulation, or its change, could theoretically lead to increased voter turnout and thus expand access to the franchise to other eligible voters. At the same time, however, it has become...
Differences in legal status of same-sex marriage between selected US states: California, Texas, Florida
Hodboď, Dominik ; Anděl, Petr (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
This thesis deals with the issue of same-sex marriage in California, Texas and Florida. Gay marriages is a very hot topic nowadays in the US. After the Supreme Court decision in June 2013, which struck down a law that explicitly defined marriage as a union only between a man and a woman, ensued a wave of states legalizing gay marriages. After another Supreme Court decision in October 2014 on the issue, it became legal in the majority of US states to wed couples of the same gender. Texas and Florida did not join these states. California on the contrary legalized same-sex marriages. The thesis searches for reasons of this disparity in legal status of gay marriages between the three states. Particularly it looks at political aspects of the issue. The thesis describes the political situation in the examined states and approach of the politicians to the question of same-sex marriages. It also deals with relevant court cases which are essential to the issue. From the researched outcomes it finds reasons for differences in legal status of same-sex marriages between California, Texas and Florida before the October 2014 Supreme Court decision.

Jirků, Veronika ; Dittmann, Robert (advisor) ; Andrlová Fidlerová, Alena (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to give a detailed description of the language development in advertisements in Czech-American periodical Svoboda. The periodical was issued from 1885 until the 1960s in Texas. Opening chapters sum up the history of Czech immigrants into the USA, present the Czech-American community in Texas emphasising their journalistic activity and characterise both the formal and content aspects of the periodical. The main part focuses on the analysis of four volumes of the weekly newspaper Svoboda based on selected issues from 1886, 1906, 1926 and 1947. Changes emerge on phonological, morphological, lexical, and syntactic levels. The orthography of certain phenomena is modified as a result of the influence of the English language. The results of this study are compared with previous linguistic research.
Latinos for Trump: Presidential Elections 2020
Žabková, Marie Magdalena ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Perutka, Lukáš (referee)
Diploma thesis is focused on the support of Latinos voters for Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. Hispanics in general are more supporters of the Democratic Party, so the increased support for Donald Trump proclaimed in media after the election has been surprising for many experts and public especially regarding Trump's rhetoric and his attacks on some Hispanic prominent figures. In the thesis, I discuss whether Donald Trump gained more Latinos support in the election. I argue that Donald Trump gained more Latino support in the election. The thesis is confirmed in the theoretical and practical part based on an analysis of composition of the Hispanic electorate, pre-election, and post-election surveys and through the analysis of counties with at least 70% concentration of Hispanic population. The thesis also deals with Donald Trump's election campaign and the motivation of Latinos to vote for the Republican candidate. Donald Trump tried to reach out Hispanic voters more than in 2016 through greater funding of political spots, greater representation of Latinos in the election team, debates targeting Latinos voters and other initiatives. These moves were symbolic rather than practical in nature. The voting of Latinos for Donald Trump was probably influenced by external factors - the...
