Hejdrychová, Kateřina ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee)
Title: Solving strategies of word problems in their historical development Abstract This thesis deals with word problems which can be solved by using linear equations. Its aim is to create a collection of current and historical problems selected from different periods of the history of mathematics. In the first part, the level of emphasis put on the use of word problems in the teaching of mathematics by the Framework Education Programme is shown. The contribution of word problems to developing mathematical and financial literacy is also highlighted The second part deals with the history of mathematics focusing on the domains of equations and word problems, both from a worldwide and Czech perspective. The third part is a collection of type problems. The problems are grouped according to context in the way it is usually done in Czech educational materials for primary and secondary schools: problems dealing with the division of a whole into unequal parts, problems dealing with movement, problems dealing with joint work and problems dealing with mixtures. The collection contains three types of problems. Current problems are adopted from contemporary textbooks and collections of problems for schools. Historical problems are taken from historically significant resources from different countries. Outdated problems...

Word problems at the Waldorf secondary schools
Daniel, Radovan ; Vondrová, Naďa (advisor) ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee)
The theoretical part of the diploma thesis contains didactic analysis of word problems, that is the definition of a word problem, classification of word problems from various perspectives and methods of solving word problems, according to czech specialists in didactics of mathematics. The second part describes the teaching of mathematics at the secondary Waldorf schools with an emphasis on teaching in main lesson blocks. The core of the work lies in the experimental part which consists of two sections. The first section describes the preparation, implementation and evaluation of educational experiments on the subject of word problems. The educational experiment was conducted in the first class of the Waldorf lyceum in Prague in the academic year 2014/2015. All days of the main lesson block are described. Part of the reflection of the teacher and an observer who participated in the entire main lesson block is the part of thesis. The practical part continues with the pupil's solving strategies analysis. Pupils wrote a didactic test with word problems once before the teaching experiment and once after it. The analysis of each problem is following, in which the interesting phenomena that emerged in the pupils' solutions are explored. The conclusion summarises the main points of the research conducted...

Use of selected geometry problems from the world of finance in upper secondary mathematics education
Kocourková, Zuzana ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Tůmová, Veronika (referee)
The topic of the thesis is the use of selected tasks, which I created in my bachelor thesis, in the mathematics teaching at grammar schools. These are problematic word problems from geometry curriculum with financial themes. The aim of the thesis is to find out the role of the word problems in pupils' motivation in teaching. The theoretical part describes the issue of motivation and pupil motivation for learning. I also deal with problem of word problems, their definition and typology. The practical part is focused on experiment with aim to find out the use of selected tasks in the mathe- matics teaching at grammar school. In the experiment, I primarily examined whether the tasks motivated pupils , how successful they were in solving and the influence of financial themes in selected tasks on the pupil's emotional state or his success in solving the task. I processed statistical data quantitatively and qualitatively. To collect statistical data, I used a questionnaire and observation. The evaluation of the experiment includes statistics on pupils' motivation to solve the tasks and pupils' success in solving the task. According to research results, pupils were motivated by the tasks. The difficulty of the tasks is proportional to the level of mathe- matical abilities of pupils at grammar school. The...
How children solve word problems in mathematics containing traditional and non-traditional gender content
Nováková, Veronika ; Smetáčková, Irena (advisor) ; Páchová, Anna (referee)
The goal of my thesis is to find out how school children react to word problems in mathematics that defy traditional distinction of gender roles in a typical household. This Bachelor Thesis compares in which word problems (with traditional or nontraditional gender content) children score higher and whether boys/girls in 2nd or 6th grade are more successful in solving them. It also differentiates if there are any noticeable differences between girls and boys. The research was carried out by mixed methodology and I used sequential progression of data. Firstly, I handed out the forms, then came the investigation of previously mentioned forms which granted me a better insight on the research of this particular phenomenon in the field. After the quantitative collecting of data came the qualitative investigation using half-structured interviews.
