Personality and Work of Jan Nepomuk Polasek (1873-1956)

This dissertation thesis focuses on the person and work of Jan Nepomuk Polášek (1873-1956), a distinguished regional composer and music teacher who spent a significant part of his life in Valašské Meziříčí. Throughout his life, Polášek devoted himself to creative work, which was, to a varying degree, inspired by the Moravian Wallachian folk culture. The thesis outlines the important phases of Polášek's life including his childhood and school days, first contact with music teaching, his studies at the Brno Organ School, and, last but not least, his relationship with Leoš Janáček. The Biographical part of the thesis ends with a subchapter devoted to Polášek's work in Valašské Meziříčí until his death in 1956. Polášek's body of work includes his compositions, music-related organisational activities, music teaching, publishing and folk song collecting. The aforementioned activities are presented and analysed in the remaining chapters of this dissertation thesis. The final chapter analyses selected instrumental, vocal-instrumental and vocal compositions of Polášek's, based on which it illustrates the key elements of his creative work. Josef Václav Scheybal: a documentalist and a collector

Josef Václav Scheybal : A documentalist and a collector The diploma thesis deals with Josef Václav Scheybal (1928 - 2001) and his activity mainly in northern Bohemia. It attempts to capture all aspects Scheybal's personality, because he was a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, art historian and ethnographer. He was an expert of folk architecture and sculpture, folk furniture, technical equipment, the popular clothing, prints, folk songs, was the creator of multiple exposures. He also cooperated with the Institute of ethnography and folklore, ethnographic research, participated throughout the country, with results published regularly. His focus on folk architecture resulted in a lifetime's research and documentary work. He gathered the valuable work of drawing documents, publications of folk architecture and free of the open air. The thesis also includes his family, the father Josef Scheybal and his wife Jana Scheybalová. Philosophical Perspective in John Fowles' The Collector

The present bachelor thesis deals with the book The Collector written by John Fowles. The thesis considers the novel from the philosophical perspective, especially from the Existentialist point of view. The theoretical part provides an overview of the philosophical themes which are subsequently applied in the practical part. The practical part focuses on the two main characters, Miranda Grey and Ferdinand Clegg, and their opposite life attitudes. Violence, Manipulation and a Persecuted Heroine in Vladimir Nabokov´s Lolita and John Fowles´s Collector

This bachelor thesis deals with two postmodern novels: The Collector (1963) of the British novelist John R. Fowles and Lolita (1955) by the American writer Vladimir V. Nabokov. At first the thesis focuses on a brief overview of both authors' lives, as well as on the postmodern tendencies in their works, moreover it provides a short description of postmodernism itself. Next, the main features of the Gothic novel and its founders are described along with the characters of their major works. With respect to the Gothic tradition, Edgar A. Poe's short stories are introduced with the emphasis on his evil manipulative characters. Subsequently, the previous antiheroes and heroines from the Gothic novels are compared to the contemporary characters from The Collector and Lolita. In the following chapters, the thesis pays attention to a brief summary of both novels and then it focuses on the comparative analysis of selected themes: surroundings and their function, the loss of freedom, narrators and their communication with readers, conscience and the loss of identity.

Following old master drawings within the collections of selected Czech collectors Abstract This thesis is a contribution to the history of collecting in Bohemia. It deals with the collecting of drawings and tracks them within the selected collections and collectors. It focuses primarily on the old master drawings, defined as works from the 16th to the 18th century. Within the issue of collecting the attention is, even when studying specific personalities, often paid to the picture galleries rather than the print collections. Due to its fragile nature, drawing tends to fit into the background and, if it does not form the main part of the collection, is not reflected. Many of the collections and collectors have come to attention lately, but many still await their appreciation and introduction into new contexts. This bachelor thesis focuses on Charles Saatchi, who will be presented here as an important figure among contemporary art collectors. Not only the biography, which is written in the following chapters, but also Saatchi's art collection, buying strategies and the Saatchi Gallery are mentioned. This thesis examines possible connections between Saatchi's acquisitions and the art market. Besides these is written more about the influence of Charles Saatchi on Young British Artists, a loose group of artists. This bachelor thesis presents also Saatchi's relations to the other art collectors.

Back to the Tribe's Womb: Tendencies in Contemporary Culture

Michel Maffesoli and Zygmunt Bauman add the traits of Benjamin's flâneur to the (neo-)nomad, namely his "flâneur" gaze and his relation to commodities. But in the concept of nomad these traits gain specific nature - on the field of fashion they transform nomad into migrant, who is capable of creative work with vanitas. Nomad as a travelling flâneur is a stranger-guest and becomes a tourist, willingly getting lost in the city and voluntarily being surprised by unexpected encounters. Tourists relation to his memories could be described with Benjamin's description of mémoire involontaire as a revived punctum. A tourist prepares his memories like a nicely descending ruins. Souvenir is his materialised memory. It's not only a duplicated plastic Eiffel tower, but a magic artifact. It's a collective aura, what's on Benjamin's mind when he writes about aura regression. The private aura comes instead, turning things to talismans, reenchanting the world. The era of postmechanical reproduction reminds one, that there is a way to reproduce not just mechanically but biologically: a bricolage remix is made. Souvenirs descend and take shape of hommogenic rummage which reveals the fundamental form of postmodern metamorphosis: recyclation. This metamorphosis can finally be used when analyzing the settler turn into nomad...
